Glen Elgin has deep roots in three distilleries connected to White Horse Blended Whisky. First is Lagavulin, inherited by the brand's creator Peter Mackie from his father. Second is Craigellachie, built by Mackie in 1891 to supply malt whisky for White Horse. Third is Glen Elgin itself, owned not by the Mackie family but by DCL, which acquired White Horse Distillers in 1927. Since the 1890s, single malt whisky from these three distilleries formed the base of White Horse, one of the world's best-selling whiskies in the first half of the 20th century. Though now ranked 15th in whisky sales, White Horse remains the most popular Scotch whisky in some regions, selling 19 million bottles in 2018. Although Glen Elgin wasn't included in Diageo's 1988 Classic Malts series, it has been sold as a single malt since 1977. Respected by blenders and recognized for its consumer sales potential, it briefly appeared in the Flora & Fauna series. In 2002, Diageo gave four brands increased focus—Glen Elgin, Caol Ila, Clynelish, and Glen Ord—launching the Hidden Malts series. While Hidden Malts sold for several years, Glen Ord has since joined The Singleton family, while the other three now appear in the expanded Classic Malts series. Since 2001, Glen Elgin Distillery has operated with one 8.4-ton Steinecker full-lauter mash tun, nine larch washbacks (two replaced in 2018), and six small stills. The distillery runs 12-16 mashes weekly. The stills are connected to six wooden worm tub condensers. In 2019, the distillery operated five days per week, producing 1.8 million liters of new make spirit annually. The sole official bottling is Glen Elgin 12 Year Old. In 2017, Glen Elgin released an 18-year-old expression for the Special Releases series, matured in bodega European oak sherry casks.

Sipping this on a lazy afternoon, I kept getting hit by green melons and a bit of broken‑branch vibe, like stepping through a damp orchard. There's a subtle chives note that sneaks in, almost like a whisper of fresh herb, then the sweet marzipan comes along and softens everything. It feels pretty thick indeed, with a waxier mouthfeel that’s oddly comforting – think a dollop of hazelnut oil swirling around. A hint of white wine acidity cuts through the grassy fatness, and the greengages and gooseberries pop up like tiny green fireworks. The texture is pretty sublime, almost like a large spoonful of olive oil coating the palate, while a faint bark and rhubarb edge keep it from getting too sweet. All in all, very good indeed, with a lingering, rather long after‑taste that keeps me sipping incognito. 😊

Took a sip and immediately hit with this thick, almost oily mouthfeel, like a large spoonful of sunflower oil mixed with something waxy. There's a nutty edge, hazelnut oil and marzipan dancing around, but then this grassy fatness creeps in, herbal and a bit wild. The fruit side’s got white wine and grapefruits upfront, but underneath, greengages and gooseberries tartness, maybe even a hint of rhubarb sharpness. It’s got this bark-like depth, reminds me of broken branches and branche-y textures, not sure how else to put it. The finish is rather long, leaves this creamy, malt lover’s vibe on the tongue. Sublime texture, pretty thick indeed, almost chewy. Very good indeed, but feels like it’s hiding something incognito beneath all that richness. Weirdly satisfying, like a garden after rain. 🥃

Just had a dram that’s really rather satisfying, this one. The texture’s sublime, quite thick indeed, with a sort of broken branches earthiness that’s hard to pin down. There’s a grassy fatness upfront, like crushed chives and green melons, then something incognito—maybe rhubarb or gooseberries—lingering in the background. The finish is waxier, almost bark-like, with a whisper of marzipan sweetness. Very good indeed, and the way it sits on the tongue is pretty thick, very malt-forward. Reminds me of white wine left in the sun, but with more depth. A proper sipper, this. 🥃

Right, so I poured myself a dram tonight and honestly, it's got this lovely branche-y, almost bark-like thing going on at first. Then it opens up into these green gooseberries and greengages, almost like walking past a hedgerow in summer. There's a waxier texture than I expected, quite fat and thick on the tongue actually. Reminds me a bit of white wine but richer somehow. 🌿 Getting some grapefruit and rhubarb sharpness cutting through, with a hint of sunflower seed oil and hazelnut oil - that kind of nutty richness, you know? Like a really good olive oil but in whisky form. A touch of grassy chives comes through too, and then this marzipan sweetness sneaks up on the finish. Rather long as well, just keeps going. Not bad at all for a Tuesday evening. Very good indeed. 😌

First sip is proper thick, like a large spoonful of olive oil. Very fat and grassy at the same time, reminds me of green melons and greengages. Marzipan sweetness comes through, mixed with grapefruit pith and gooseberry tartness. Really lovely texture, quite waxier than expected. Hints of chives and sunflower seeds in there, a bit incognito. The finish? Rather long. Leaves a taste of broken branches and bark, with hazelnut oil. Very good indeed. 🥃
