Glen Elgin has deep roots in three distilleries connected to White Horse Blended Whisky. First is Lagavulin, inherited by the brand's creator Peter Mackie from his father. Second is Craigellachie, built by Mackie in 1891 to supply malt whisky for White Horse. Third is Glen Elgin itself, owned not by the Mackie family but by DCL, which acquired White Horse Distillers in 1927. Since the 1890s, single malt whisky from these three distilleries formed the base of White Horse, one of the world's best-selling whiskies in the first half of the 20th century. Though now ranked 15th in whisky sales, White Horse remains the most popular Scotch whisky in some regions, selling 19 million bottles in 2018. Although Glen Elgin wasn't included in Diageo's 1988 Classic Malts series, it has been sold as a single malt since 1977. Respected by blenders and recognized for its consumer sales potential, it briefly appeared in the Flora & Fauna series. In 2002, Diageo gave four brands increased focus—Glen Elgin, Caol Ila, Clynelish, and Glen Ord—launching the Hidden Malts series. While Hidden Malts sold for several years, Glen Ord has since joined The Singleton family, while the other three now appear in the expanded Classic Malts series. Since 2001, Glen Elgin Distillery has operated with one 8.4-ton Steinecker full-lauter mash tun, nine larch washbacks (two replaced in 2018), and six small stills. The distillery runs 12-16 mashes weekly. The stills are connected to six wooden worm tub condensers. In 2019, the distillery operated five days per week, producing 1.8 million liters of new make spirit annually. The sole official bottling is Glen Elgin 12 Year Old. In 2017, Glen Elgin released an 18-year-old expression for the Special Releases series, matured in bodega European oak sherry casks.

Blimey, had a glug of this last night after a rubbish day at work 🥃 First hits are all mashy, ueber-porridgeness with that soft sourdough twang and a whiff of flour, proper comforting like a Sunday brekkie almost? Then it opens up like a flower in the morning, you get that utter leafiness first, followed by huge lemons and zestier grapefruit zing. It’s less ‘pure’ than the standard stuff I usually neck, which is weirdly lovely? There’s a little light honey sweetness to round it off, the finish is long and has a nice little spicy chills kick, not too tough on the old palate either. All in all? Proper excellent, right proper satisfying.

bloody lovely dram this one. First sip hits you with this zesty punch of grapefruit and huge lemons, but it’s not just citrus – there’s a mashy, almost sourdough-like thickness to it, like porridge left out in the sun. The melissa adds a herbal twist, reminds me of those nettles by the garden. It’s got this pale white wine lightness but then suddenly turns tough, all spicy and chalky. let it sit a mo’ and it opens up like a flower in the morning – nectar sweetness creeps in, puréed chestnuts and light honey, mind. the utter leafiness lingers on the nose, but in a good way. less citrus and less ‘pure’ than you’d expect, more like a proper complex beast. finish is long, proper warming chills with this subtle flour-dust note. excellent stuff, that. 🥃

Oh, this one’s proper interesting—like a proper autumn morning in the Cotswolds, but with a twist. First sip’s got that ueber-porridgeness of chestnut purée, all creamy and mashy, like you’ve just dug up a spud from the garden and it’s still warm. Then—whoa—this sourdough crust thing hits, like the crust of a fresh loaf you’ve just pulled from the oven, but with a bit of a bite to it. The honey’s there, but it’s not sweet—it’s light, like the first drizzle of summer on a honeycomb, not overpowering. Melissa creeps in next, that lemony, herbal thing, like you’ve just crushed a leaf between your fingers. Then—bam—the chalky bit, like a flinty hillside after rain, grounding it all down. But then it opens up—properly, like a flower in the morning, all slow and proper. The grapefruit’s there, but it’s not sharp, it’s more like the zest of a grapefruit you’ve just squeezed, just a hint of that bitter-sweetness. The flour? Yeah, it’s like you’ve got a bit of dust from the mill in your mouth, but not in a bad way—it’s just there, adding texture. And the long finish? Proper satisfying. Not too tough, not too short—just lingers like a good chat with an old mate over a pint. The leafiness is utter, like you’re standing in a wood at dusk, all green and quiet. Feels like it’s not trying to be pure—it’s just proper, unpretentious, like a good cuppa on a cold day.

Right, so this one's honestly excellent. First whiff I get this nectar sweetness, almost like light honey with a bit of melissa. Opens up like a flower in the morning - starts off a bit mashy and tough, but then it just unfolds beautifully. There's a sourdough quality to it, yeasty and warm. And this puréed chestnut thing going on... weirdly comforting, like autumn in a glass. Texture's got some chalk to it, not in a bad way. The leafiness is there throughout, quite earthy really. Less citrus than I'd expected - was hoping for more limes but it's more huge lemons, zestier once it opens up. Flour notes too, almost bready. And that ueber-porridgeness - proper porridge vibes, oats and warmth 🥣 Finish is long, really long. When you're just sitting there and the chills hit on a cold evening... perfect dram for that honestly. 🥃
