Clynelish Single Malt Whisky stands as one of the most esteemed and strategically vital distilleries within Diageo's portfolio, serving as a cornerstone malt for the iconic Johnnie Walker blended Scotch whisky range, particularly the prestigious Gold Label Reserve. The distillery's distinctive waxy, honeyed character has rendered it indispensable to master blenders for nearly two centuries. Dr. Jim Beveridge OBE, Diageo's Master Blender for over four decades, has been the guardian of Johnnie Walker's consistent quality and signature house style. As only the sixth Master Blender in the brand's 200-year history, Beveridge helms a team of 12 expert blenders while bearing ultimate responsibility for the world's best-selling Scotch whisky. Among all malt whiskies, Clynelish holds a privileged position in his blending repertoire, alongside Talisker, as his preferred foundation for crafting complex blends. In recognition of his monumental contributions to the Scotch whisky industry, Dr. Beveridge was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in June 2019, an honor that coincided with Diageo's bicentennial celebrations. The Clynelish distillery underwent a comprehensive year-long refurbishment in June 2017, emerging with state-of-the-art equipment including a 12.5-tonne full lauter mash tun, eight traditional wooden washbacks, and two stainless steel fermenters. The facility operates with three pairs of stills, offering panoramic views of Brora village and the North Sea from the stillhouse. Running seven days a week, the distillery produces approximately 4.8 million liters of new make spirit annually. Notably, around 6,000 casks of Clynelish spirit mature in the warehouses of its sister distillery Brora, which ceased operations but is now undergoing extensive restoration to reopen in 2020. The majority of Clynelish's maturation stock, however, rests in other Diageo facilities across Scotland. Clynelish's official bottlings showcase the distillery's elegant character, led by the benchmark 14-year-old expression and the Distiller's Edition, which receives a finishing period in Oloroso Seco sherry casks. The distillery has also featured prominently in Diageo's annual Special Releases, with the Clynelish Select Reserve appearing for two consecutive years. In a contemporary marketing highlight, spring 2019 saw the launch of the Game of Thrones Limited Edition Collection, featuring eight single malts—including a Clynelish bottling representing House Tyrell at 51.6% ABV, without age statement.

Justpoured a dram and got hit by pine resins and a nervous saltiness that reminded me of sea‑spray on the hills. There’s a whisper of crystallised exotic fruits and salted walnuts, then soft beeswax and menthol swirling in. A touch of preserved dark fruits and balsamic depth, with heather honey and warming spice notes making it feel gloriously earthy. The finish is long, coppery gold, with gunmetal edges and a wee touch of miso that adds a meaty stock note – weirdly comforting, like a savoury scone. All in all, it’s polished, well‑integrated and rather thrillingly elegant. 🥃

Nose hits me first with this gloriously earthy depth, preserved dark fruits and a touch of spiced damsons — almost like someone’s spread quince jelly on a leather-bound book. There’s a whisper of medicinal notes, camphor and bitter herbal cough medicines, but it’s balanced by the sweetest crystallised exotic fruits. Takes a sip and it’s full, majestic texture, coppery gold in the glass with wee touches of miso and toasted walnuts. Gunmetal and natural tar mingle weirdly well with the sherry’s plush leathery note, though I’d say Clynelish and sherry don’t always tango too well. Lingering warmth of heather honey and soft beeswax, but then the spices kick in — mustard powder, pine resins, a nervous saltiness that makes me think of shoe polish and salted walnuts. Long finish, superbly elegant but with this profoundly complex mustiness, like old books and tobacco leaf soaked in polished mahogany. Fruits and herbs dance in the background while the meaty stock notes keep things grounded. Bit of a tightrope act, but somehow it’s all well-integrated, waxy and gamey in a way I can’t quite explain. Just… rather thrillingly elegant, innit? 🥃

Warm and cosy on the nose — bit of honey, oak and dried fruit. Sip feels smooth, with a wee peppery kick 🥃 Finishes mellow, slightly smoky, and leaves a nice sweet warmth. Quite comforting, tbh.

Warm and a bit spicy, with a soft sweet note like toffee and dried fruit 😊 Bit of oak, tiny smoke, and a cosy finish. Proper easy to sip on a chilly evening.

This whisky hits different, innit? 😋 First sip - got a proper kick of peat, like a bonfire on the moors 🔥. Then it mellows right out, all smooth like honey drizzled on toast 🍯. There's a bit of spice at the back, cinnamon maybe? Warms you up proper nice. Finish is long and a bit oaky, like sitting in an old library 📚. Honestly, it's lush. The kind of dram you savour slow, maybe with a cheeky square of dark choccy. Get it down ya! 🥃
