Clynelish Single Malt Whisky stands as one of the most esteemed and strategically vital distilleries within Diageo's portfolio, serving as a cornerstone malt for the iconic Johnnie Walker blended Scotch whisky range, particularly the prestigious Gold Label Reserve. The distillery's distinctive waxy, honeyed character has rendered it indispensable to master blenders for nearly two centuries. Dr. Jim Beveridge OBE, Diageo's Master Blender for over four decades, has been the guardian of Johnnie Walker's consistent quality and signature house style. As only the sixth Master Blender in the brand's 200-year history, Beveridge helms a team of 12 expert blenders while bearing ultimate responsibility for the world's best-selling Scotch whisky. Among all malt whiskies, Clynelish holds a privileged position in his blending repertoire, alongside Talisker, as his preferred foundation for crafting complex blends. In recognition of his monumental contributions to the Scotch whisky industry, Dr. Beveridge was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in June 2019, an honor that coincided with Diageo's bicentennial celebrations. The Clynelish distillery underwent a comprehensive year-long refurbishment in June 2017, emerging with state-of-the-art equipment including a 12.5-tonne full lauter mash tun, eight traditional wooden washbacks, and two stainless steel fermenters. The facility operates with three pairs of stills, offering panoramic views of Brora village and the North Sea from the stillhouse. Running seven days a week, the distillery produces approximately 4.8 million liters of new make spirit annually. Notably, around 6,000 casks of Clynelish spirit mature in the warehouses of its sister distillery Brora, which ceased operations but is now undergoing extensive restoration to reopen in 2020. The majority of Clynelish's maturation stock, however, rests in other Diageo facilities across Scotland. Clynelish's official bottlings showcase the distillery's elegant character, led by the benchmark 14-year-old expression and the Distiller's Edition, which receives a finishing period in Oloroso Seco sherry casks. The distillery has also featured prominently in Diageo's annual Special Releases, with the Clynelish Select Reserve appearing for two consecutive years. In a contemporary marketing highlight, spring 2019 saw the launch of the Game of Thrones Limited Edition Collection, featuring eight single malts—including a Clynelish bottling representing House Tyrell at 51.6% ABV, without age statement.

Just poured a dram that glows pale gold, swirling with myriads of tiny aromas – citrus zest, fresh herbs, a hint of pure beeswax and honey. It feels utterly perfect balance, cerebral yet warm, like stepping into an impressionistic garden of flowers. The finish is long, massive, leaving a soft beehive glow. 🍯

Bloody hell, this dram is absolutely stunning 😮 First you get crisp lemon peel, that almost brittle dry hit, tiny glimmers of dried crystallised exotic fruits, faintest wisp of peat smoke, even a weird yet lovely whiff of church candles dissolved in a tanker of kerosine. Then it gets so coastal, like crushed sea shells, seawater, seaweed crackers, sea air, sharp saline notes. Mouth slatherd in this huge fatty waxy oily texture, you get sheep wool oils, waxed canvas, lanolin, camphor, menthol, that almost Arctic white chalky mineral hit, faint metal tang, petrol whiff, smoked olive oil mixed with umami broth, some herbal teas lurking in the back too. The structure’s so taut, controlled power, immense weight and texture, purity and precision are off the charts. Gets more herbal, dry, long saline finish, with straw and linens hanging about at the end. Sends almost all contemporary distillates — even the ‘great’ ones — back to school, honestly. Just beautiful, that’s it. 🤤

Oh mate, this one leaves you absolutely speechless. 🍯🍯🍯 It’s this staggering wave of pure beeswax and warm honey right from the first moment, but there’s this stunning mead quality to it as well. Like liquid gold from a glorious old white wine cellar, think something as super vintage as Mouton 2000. The complexity is just cerebral, a real Queen’s Gambit for the senses – you’re trying to work out all the subcategories of flavour. There’s this pointillistic dance of myriads of tiny aromas; bright citron marmalade, delicate flowers, all those waxes and honeys, but it forms this monolithic whole that’s utterly perfect. It’s like driving a classic Bugatti Atalante down a country lane – impressive, elegant, and utterly thrilling. The finish just goes on and on, long and pure, leaving you with a glorious echo. Totally stunning. ✨🏁

Blimeing hell, this dram’s a right proper stunner 🥃✨ First sniff hits you with sharp, saline minerals and this almost Arctic white crispness, like biting into a lemon peel dipped in seawater. Then the texture—oh, the texture—it’s huge and fatty, all waxes and sheep wool oils, slathering the gob something fierce. There’s a strange, thrilling mix of medical ointments and vapour rubs, but in the best way, if you catch me drift. It’s got poise, this one. Like it’s directing aromas at you with strategic purpose, some herbal teas lurking in the background, mustard powder and linens dancing about. The power’s immense but controlled, proper taut, and that finish? Long, stark, with a hint of peat smoke and these tiny glimmers of crystallised fruits. Just beautiful. Makes most modern malts look like amateurs, if I’m honest. Stunning!

Blimey, this one proper knocked my socks off 😮 First sip and I'm hit with this waxy lemon peel thing, like someone's lit church candles next to an oil lamp. Bit of camphor and vapour rub lurking in there too - not unpleasant, just... commanding, you know? Like it's standing there in a waxed jacket, arms crossed, daring you to look away. The sea air notes are stunning. Crushed shells, seaweed crackers, almost chalky minerals. There's a faint whisper of peat smoke but it's not shouting about it. More like a polite cough in the background. What gets me is the texture - proper mouth-slathering, fatty and oily, yet somehow still taut and precise. It's like someone built a coastline in a glass. The herbal tea notes creep in later, along with these wee glimmers of crystallised fruits hiding in the corners. Dry finish, quite stark honestly, but full of raw cereal power underneath. Menthol and medical ointments on the way out. Almost brittle in places. Just... breathtaking really. Controlled power innit. This thing knows exactly what it's doing and isn't afraid to show you. The poise is unreal. Stunning whisky. Sends a lot of the hyped-up stuff back to school if I'm honest 🥃
