Brora stands as one of Scotland's most legendary 'ghost distilleries,' having operated from 1819 to 1983 before its closure and miraculous rebirth in 2020. Originally established as Clynelish by the notorious Marquis of Stafford during the Highland Clearances, the distillery was rebuilt in 1896 by James Ainslie, creating a heavily peated maritime malt that became essential to Johnnie Walker blends. After DCL built a new Clynelish distillery in 1967, the original site was renamed Brora and specialized in robust, phenolic whisky for premium blends. During its 'silent era' (1983-2020), remaining stocks became some of the world's most collectible whiskies, commanding auction prices exceeding $10,000 per bottle. Diageo's £35 million restoration preserved two original copper pot stills and vintage equipment, relaunching production in 2020 with an 800,000-liter capacity. The distillery's waxy, sooty, maritime character—reminiscent of burnt heather and sea salt—continues to define its ultra-premium Special Releases and the milestone 40-year-old 200th anniversary edition.

Hada dram tonight – dry coastal vibe, liquorice and herbs in sync, a touch of salted chestnut honey and old candle notes. Mouth feels oilier, creamier, almost drying in a good way, with a whisper of wormwood and tarry smoke, faint bandages. Not the longest finish but the freshness is impressive, beats last year’s for me. 😊

Gorgeous dram this one – curiously softer than I remembered, with more herbal notes dancing on the nose. There's a liquoricy sweetness upfront, almost like cough drops dipped in herbs and verbena. The ashy undertones give it a peaty depth without being overpowering, and the body? Fat and chiselled, like it's been carved from a single block of oak. It’s got this weird Chinese side that I can’t quite place – maybe the oily, syrupy extracts they mention. Smoky, yeah, but in a good way, like an old candle’s wax mixed with tarry smoke. Coastal vibes come through too, more salty air than anything else, though it’s drier than last year’s batch – less chocolate, more mud and linoleum. The finish is huge, coats the tongue with something indestructible. Resinous hints linger, like sap from pine trees soaked in embrocations. Hay and salted fish pop up occasionally, which sounds odd but works. Exceptional balance, though – astounding complexity without the usual sherry or tobacco kick. Definitely beats last year’s, in a good way. Proper dram. 🥃

Just had a dram that feels indestructible, with a peaty year vibe, a touch of wormwood and liquorice, and a hint of salted chestnut honey – almost drying but oddly comforting. The palate is oilier and creamier, with resinous notes and a whisper of coastal oysters, finishing with a faint chartreuse freshness. Curiously softer than last year's, yet still huge and gold-coloured in the glass. 🥃

This one’s got a proper punch to it. The nose hits you with this smoky, almost tarry thing – like a peaty bonfire by the coast. There's a sweet, salted chestnut honey note that’s oddly comforting, mixing with something herbal, maybe a hint of verbena or wormwood. It’s got that ‘Chinese side’ complexity, loads of layers without being overwhelming. On the tongue, it’s got a creamy, oilier texture – reminds me of those old-school cough drops my gran used to have. The peat lingers, but not aggressively, more like embers on a hearth. A touch of liquorice and salted fish sneaks in there, which sounds mad but works. The finish is long, with a whisper of resinous pine and a farmy earthiness that’s solid, like well-worn boots. It’s got a bit of that artisan absinth cheekiness – herbal and slightly drying, but in a good way. The more coastal vibe fades into this ashy, mud-like warmth. Proper bonzer dram, this. 🥃

Blimey, that’s a proper beast of a dram 😅 First hit’s all resinous pine and that green Chartreuse kick, like chewing on fresh verbena. Then it turns farmy—hay, mud, a whiff of old bandages, but in a good way. Salted chestnut honey sweetness lurks underneath, but it’s not cloying. More herbal than usual, less sherry, which I’m not mad about. There’s a tarry smoke edge, just a little, and that liquoricy bite at the end. Fat and oily on the tongue, almost drying, but the finish isn’t massively long. Feels like it’s got that Chinese herbal medicine vibe going on too. Proper complex, this one.
