Brora stands as one of Scotland's most legendary 'ghost distilleries,' having operated from 1819 to 1983 before its closure and miraculous rebirth in 2020. Originally established as Clynelish by the notorious Marquis of Stafford during the Highland Clearances, the distillery was rebuilt in 1896 by James Ainslie, creating a heavily peated maritime malt that became essential to Johnnie Walker blends. After DCL built a new Clynelish distillery in 1967, the original site was renamed Brora and specialized in robust, phenolic whisky for premium blends. During its 'silent era' (1983-2020), remaining stocks became some of the world's most collectible whiskies, commanding auction prices exceeding $10,000 per bottle. Diageo's £35 million restoration preserved two original copper pot stills and vintage equipment, relaunching production in 2020 with an 800,000-liter capacity. The distillery's waxy, sooty, maritime character—reminiscent of burnt heather and sea salt—continues to define its ultra-premium Special Releases and the milestone 40-year-old 200th anniversary edition.

I got a whiff of linoleum and damp mud, then a salty oyster brine with a hint of salted chestnut honey. Herbal notes pop up – wormwood, verbena, a touch of liquorice and some resinous pine. 🌿 There's a creamy, oily mouthfeel that gets richer as it opens, with a little tarry smoke and a dash of chartreuse‑like bitterness. It feels both fat and chiselled, kinda like biting into a fresh herb sprig wrapped in hay. The finish leans coastal, dry, with a lingering cough‑drop sweetness that fades slowly. 🌊

Had a dram tonight that felt surprisingly soft yet fat and chiselled, with a whisper of tarry smoke and a hint of salted chestnut honey. The herbal side reminded me of verbena and a touch of absinth, almost like old candle wax mixed with resinous notes. A little smokier than last year’s, but not overly long on the finish – still exceptional, with a coastal brine and oysters vibe. 🌊

Justpoured a dram and got hit by that tarry smoke right away, like an old candle left in a shed. There's a bright thread of verbena and a hint of gold‑coloured honey, then it settles into something curiously softer, almost drying on the tongue. I’m picking up pinesap, a whiff of liquorice and a dash of wormwood – feels like the best cough syrup ever but in a good way. A touch of hay and some resinous notes give it a coastal, oily creaminess, while the trademark farmy touches keep it grounded. Finish is perhaps not extremely long but leaves a pleasant chartreuse‑green freshness. Absolutely enjoying this one.

This one’s got a curiously softer edge than I expected – almost creamy on the tongue. There’s a dry, herbal lift upfront, like old candle wax mixed with cough drops, and the salted chestnut honey gives it this oddly sweet, muddy depth. I’m getting hints of pinesap and wormwood, which dance around the back of the throat like chartreuse and liquorice rolled into one. A little smokier than the last dram, but less tobacco-heavy, more coastal – think driftwood and sea salt. The finish is long, indestructible almost, with a golden, ashy warmth that lingers like the best cough syrup ever. Exceptional sappy oil extracts here, makes it feel quite fat and chiselled. Not too sherry-forward, which suits me fine. Huge, bold character, but in a good way.

Crikey, this one's got me going. Poured a dram and immediately got hit with that classic farmyard hay smell, then it opens up into something proper coastal — like standing on a cliff with salt air smacking you in the face. Oysters and salted fish on the nose, weirdly specific but I'm not complaining. There's this ashy, tarry smoke quality that's somehow lighter than last year's release. Less of the tobacco and dark chocolate thing, more of that herbal, wormwood bitterness coming through. Almost like chartreuse or artisan absinth, very dry. The mouthfeel is gorgeous — oily and creamy, chiselled but also kind of fat at the same time. Resinous, sappy notes mixing with liquorice and verbena. Touches of pinesap and even something that reminds me of old linoleum? Strange but it works. Hints of salted chestnut honey sneak in, balancing all that dry herbal stuff. The coastal character just keeps building. It's huge but refined, proper exceptional stuff 🥃 Almost drying in the finish, in a good way. A little bit of mud and bandage-like notes. Amazing complexity really, the freshness is what gets me most. Def beats last year's in my book 👌
