Tomatin: In 2005, Tomatin decided to forge its own path. At year-end, they distilled a batch of whisky using Optic barley peated to 15ppm and filled them into various cask types. Eight years later, a distinctive Tomatin single malt brand emerged—Cù Bòcan. Over the following six years, the distillery released numerous expressions under this line. Despite its popularity, Tomatin felt it was time for a brand realignment. In summer 2019, three new Cù Bòcan whiskies launched: the core Signature, plus Creation #1 and Creation #2. Creation #1 is finished in a combination of Black Isle Brewery Imperial Stout casks and Bacalhôa Moscatel De Setúbal wine casks, while Creation #2 matures in Japanese shōchū casks and European virgin oak casks. The distillery features a nine-tonne full-lauter stainless steel mash tun, twelve stainless steel fermentation tanks (54-110 hour fermentation), and six stills. Its 2019 production target was 18 million liters, including two weeks dedicated to peated whisky production at 40ppm. The core range includes Legacy, 12, 18, 30, and 36 Year Old, plus Tomatin Cask Strength, Tomatin Port Cask 14 Year Old, and Tomatin First Fill Bourbon Cask UK Exclusive. The 30 Year Old joined in 2018. Limited releases feature the Five Virtues series (Wood, Fire, Earth, Water, Metal), each cask-finished for unique profiles. The Warehouse 6 Collection includes Tomatin 40 Year Old and the recent 1975 Oloroso Cask release. Tomatin 50 Year Old, one of the distillery's most historic releases, debuted in 2018. Travel retail exclusives include 8, 12, 15, and 40 Year Old expressions. The peated portfolio is represented by Cù Bòcan Signature, Cù Bòcan Creation #1, and Cù Bòcan Creation #2.

Pouring this one, it’s a light amber glow, like catching the last rays of sun through a kitchen window. First sip’s a right mix—marmalade and fresh mango hit you straight away, but it’s not a fruit bomb, more like a playful dance between sweet and that bittersweet edge. There’s a proper grassy freshness, almost like wet grass after a summer rain, with a hint of pinewood and polished oak that’s been kissed by time. A drop of water opens it up beautifully—suddenly, there’s orange blossom water and something fudgy, like a croissant dusted with cinnamon. The sherry starts whispering more, mixing with notes of walnut and this lingering, almost metallic tang that gets sharper if you let it sit too long. It’s farmy in a gentle way, like a walk through fields, but there’s also this polished, almost menthol coolness at the back. The finish is quite long, earthy and dry, with hints of humus and a whisper of polished wood. Quality’s high, no doubt about it, but it’s not the usual classic 1976 I was expecting—more of a layered mystery that keeps you guessing. Bloody lovely, really. 🥃

Oak hits first, like polished floorboards underfoot 🌳 Then a whiff of fresh croissants still warm from the baker’s tray Light amber glow in the glass, but it’s the sherry creeping out more that steals the show A playful sip—mangos dancing with cinnamon, bittersweet like marmalade on toast Not quite a fruit bomb, more like a stroll through a farmyard in autumn Wet grass clinging to your boots, humus and walnuts in the hedgerows A touch of menthol at the back, like a crisp winter morning Orange blossom water on the nose, but it’s the polished oak keeping things grounded Fudgy tones lurking there too, like a secret in the corner of the room Drown it a bit and the metallic edge sharpens, but a few drops? Perfect Classic 1976 vibes, but not the usual—more fresh, more alive Long finish, like the last light of a summer evening

Had a wee dram of something special last night. First thing that hits you is that polished oak, proper old wood, but not in a tired way – it talks first, then all these farmy notes roll in. Wet grass, lovely grassiness, a real earthy humus thing going on. Almost like walking through a field after rain. Surprisingly fresh for its age. Got this light amber colour in the glass, and the fruit’s all mangos and marmalade, zesty and bright. There’s a gentle cinnamon warmth and a touch of menthol that lifts everything. With a few drops it reacts perfectly well, opens up even more – fresh croissants straight from the oven, no kidding. It’s not the ‘usual’ 1976 Tomatin you’d expect. Quality’s high, dangerously easy to drink. Feels like a classic 1976 done a bit differently, and I’m here for it. 🌾🥭

Warm and malty, with a bit of honey, soft fruit and a wee touch of smoke. Feels cosy rather than punchy — nice gentle spice at the end 🥃 Bit oaky, bit sweet, pretty easygoing.

Quite mellow and cosy, with a bit of dried fruit, honey and soft oak. There’s a gentle spice that warms up nicely, not too shouty. Bit of orange peel and vanilla too 🥃 Feels like an easy dram for a quiet evening, proper comforting.
