GlenAllachie Distillery, nestled in the heart of Speyside, represents one of the most remarkable success stories in modern Scotch whisky. Acquired in July 2017 by whisky legend Billy Walker and his partners, this previously overlooked distillery has been transformed into an award-winning single malt brand through meticulous cask management and traditional craftsmanship. Under Walker's guidance, GlenAllachie launched an impressive portfolio of vintage single cask releases in early 2018, followed by a carefully curated core range including 10, 12, 15, 18, and 25-year-old expressions—all non-chill filtered, naturally colored, and bottled at either cask strength or 46-48% ABV. The distillery's visitor center opened in May 2019, offering two distinct experiences: 'The Wee' tour featuring a simplified distillery walkthrough with three drams, and 'The Connoisseur' tour providing comprehensive access with five drams. Production highlights include an exceptionally long fermentation period of 160 hours, annual output of 100,000 liters of heavily peated new make (80ppm) for the MacNair's Lum Reek blend series, and a unique triple casking strategy at 63.5%, 68%, and 72% ABV. With a design capacity of 4 million liters but operating at just 700,000 liters annually, GlenAllachie prioritizes quality over quantity across its 16 warehouses (2 dunnage, 2 racked, 12 palletized) and specialized equipment including a 9.4-ton semi-lauter mash tun, six stainless steel washbacks, two additional Caperdonich washbacks, and two pairs of unusually wide stills equipped with traditional worm tub condensers.

Took a sip and immediately thought of a tart green apple, maybe with a bit of kiwi and lemongrass zing. The bourbon wood gives it this lovely roundness, like a hug from an old jumper, while rhubarb tarte pops in the middle. There’s something shy and sleepy about it, like it’s been hiding in a cask for 25 years, but then – bam! A flash of spearmint and vanilla sneaks in. Not the most out-there spirit, but it’s got this chalky, clay backbone that’s weirdly comforting. The finish is sour wood and ripe peaches, lingering just enough. Proper enjoyable, in a quiet sort of way. 😊

Pale gold in the glass, a bit of that nervous edge at the start, then the lime‑y bite of lemongrass and chalky lemon cuts through. I’m hit with a sharp, angular snap of greengages and gooseberries, a flash of kiwi that makes me think of a summer garden. The bourbon wood gives a nice roundness, while the shy refill wood whispers of 25 years tucked away, giving a gentle vanilla hum and a hint of cardamom. There’s a fresh bite of green pepper and spearmint, then the sweet surprise of drops of agave and a large rhubarb tarte vibe – tart, creamy, a little like a chenin blanc dessert. The finish is long, with a whisper of rhubarb and a cheeky zing of lemons, leaving a pleasant after‑glow that makes you want another sip. 😊

Just poured a dram of this pale gold liquid – it's got this quiet, shy quality to it, not the most booming spirit I've ever nosed, but there's definitely something there. Getting fresh gooseberries and green kiwi at first, then a little hit of rhubarb tartness. A bit of chalky minerality underneath, which I quite like. There's a whisper of spearmint and something like cardamom or maybe a green peppery note? Hard to pin down. In the mouth it's got this lovely roundness from the bourbon wood, balancing out the slightly angular, sour wood edge. Flavours of greengages and a fleeting touch of peach. It's rather long, finishing with a hint of something sweet – maybe that touch of agave syrup? – and the minty freshness lingers. It's a style I always enjoy, this kind of nervous, unassuming complexity. Feels like it was saved for something special and has rewarded the patience. Really rather good. 👍

Honestly wasn't expecting much from this one at first — the spirit's not the most expressive in the world, bit quiet on the nose really. But then you get these lovely gooseberries and lemons coming through, quite tart and fresh. The bourbon wood gives it a nice roundness that balances things out. Bit of cardamom, some natural vanilla sneaking in. There's this chalky, clay-like minerality underneath that I quite like. Had me thinking of a fresh young cognac at one point, and then suddenly a big slice of rhubarb tarte 😋. Some green pepper too, which was a nice surprise. Does get a bit angular towards the end, maybe that sour wood note — but honestly it's the kind of thing I always enjoy. Rather long finish that keeps you thinking. Not the loudest whisky in the room but it grows on you. Proper good surprises here 👍

Wow, just poured a dram of this. Let’s see… First whiff is like fresh peaches and green gages, maybe a hint of that vanilla and something floral? Like rhubarb and gooseberries. 🍑 Sipping it now. There’s a lovely roundness from the wood, then all these fresh fruits pop up – lemons, kiwis, even some greengages again. Oh, and there’s a little kick of green pepper and spearmint that keeps it interesting. Then it shifts… get this chalky, almost clay-like mineral note, mixed with some tart rhubarb and a whisper of cardamom. The finish is long, with that sour wood edge balancing the sweetness. It’s like a huge rhubarb tart with a crisp, biscuity base. Really impeccable balance. A style I always enjoy – complex but so drinkable. Total good surprises with every sip. 😊
