The appointment of a new Master Blender has always been a solemn affair in the Scotch whisky world. Becoming such a figure is not an overnight achievement, but requires 5 to 10 years of rigorous training. When designated as a successor, one must serve as an apprentice, learning from the distillery's official Master Blender or Master Distiller before assuming the role. David Stewart is the longest-serving individual in Scotch whisky in roles such as Master Blender and Master Distiller, with 58 years of experience (as of 2020). His current apprentice, Kelsey McKechnie (female), is poised to inherit this legend's mantle. At 28 years old (as of 2020), she hails from Glasgow and holds a degree in biology and biological sciences. She has been with William Grant & Sons for six years since completing her studies (joined August 2014). The distillery is equipped with an 11.8-ton full-lauter mash tun; nine wooden washbacks and five stainless steel washbacks with a fermentation time of 68 hours; five wash stills and six spirit stills. In 2019, the plan was to produce 29 tons of mash per week, convertible to 7 million liters of new make spirit. The production focuses primarily on unpeated whiskies, though one week each year is dedicated to peated whisky production. The distillery also conducts its own malting, satisfying 15% of its requirements. It also employs a coppersmith and operates a cooperage. The core range includes DoubleWood 12 Year Old, DoubleWood 17 Year Old, Caribbean Cask 14 Year Old, Single Barrel 12 Year Old (first fill), Single Barrel 15 Year Old (sherry cask), Single Barrel 25 Year Old Traditional Oak, PortWood 21 Year Old, 30 Year Old, 40 Year Old, and 50 Year Old. Recent limited releases include Tun 1509 Batch 6, Tun 1858 Batch 7, and Chapter Five of The Balvenie DCS Compendium. A new limited series, The Balvenie Stories, launched in May 2019, features three expressions: The Sweet Toast of American Oak 12 Year Old, matured in first-fill bourbon casks and finished for 12 weeks in twice-toasted American oak barrels; A Week of Peat 14 Year Old, a heavily peated expression; and A Day of Dark Barley 26 Year Old. Travel retail exclusives include the Triple Cask series (12, 16, and 25 years), 21 Year Old Madeira Cask, and 14 Year Old Peated Triple Cask.

It’s a malt whisky, first you get that soft layer of wood, but it’s not oaky at all don’t worry, then you’ve got apricots, mirabelles, small berries, zesty apples and even a hint of fresh straw cut in summer 🍂 Then the creaminess kicks in, loads of vanilla cake, melted butter, coconut, tropical fruits and muscat too, there’s even a tiny touch of earl grey I swear. Reminds me so much of those Parkerised wines I tried, or the Meursaults from the 2000s vintages my mate brought round last month, same rich but bright, not heavy vibe. It’s very fine, just oakier than I thought it’d be but that’s not a bad thing, long finish too, leaves that creamy vanilla aftertaste for ages 😌

Aye, this one’s got a lovely creamy texture, like vanilla cake with a tropical fruit twist – think coconut and apricots. The nose? Tart small berries and a zesty kick, maybe a touch of earl grey. On the palate, it’s not oaky whisky at all, but there’s a layer of wood that’s so subtle, reminds me of those Parkerised wines from back when oak was still fashionable. The finish is long, with muscat and plums hanging around. Very fine, actually. It’s got this buttery mouthfeel, like a Meursault from the 2000s, but with a whisky body. Just a hint of oak, enough to nod to tradition without being overpowering 🥃

Honestly, this malt whisky is such a lovely little treat 🥃 Straw, crisp apples and plums come through first, then soft tropical fruits and those sweet mirabelles pop up, plus that creamy vanilla and vanilla cake note that makes me think of Sunday baking. The finish is so long, leaves a lovely layer of wood and buttery coconut lingering, even if it’s just a touch oakier than some it doesn’t overpower at all, no weird oaky punch even if oak was still fashionable when this was put together, honestly very fine. Halfway through you even get a little flash of early 2000s Meursault, that muscat and touch of earl grey tang, plus small berries and apricots with a nice little tartness, even a hint of Parkerised wines peeking through? So good 🤌

Blimey, this whisky is smashing 🥃! Got a rich, creamy feel to it, like vanilla cake 🎂. Can taste the plums and apricots, lovely and sweet 🍊. There's a layer of wood, but it's not overpowering, just a nice hint of oak 🌳. It's very fine, with a zesty zing to it, like a splash of citrus 🍋. And there's a tropical twist, with hints of muscat and a touch of earl grey 🍵. Lovely aftertaste, with a bit of tartness and a whisper of coconut 🥝. Not oaky at all, just a perfect balance of flavours 🙌. Proper nice with a bit of straw and small berries in the mix 🍓. Mirabelles and all that, it's like a right old fruit salad 🍉! 👍

Ah, this one’s a treat—creamy vanilla cake upfront, then a wave of tropical fruits and apricots. Bit of straw and small berries lurking in there too. Not oaky at all, but there’s a whisper of wood, like a fine Meursault. Touch of earl grey tea? Maybe. Long, smooth finish with a hint of tartness. Lovely stuff. 🥃
