Pittyvaich was a purpose-built, utilitarian distillery constructed in 1974 by Arthur Bell & Sons in Dufftown, Speyside, specifically to meet the booming demand for their Bell's blended whisky, which had become the UK's best-selling Scotch. Operating for just 19 years until its closure in 1993, this 'workhorse' distillery was designed for efficiency rather than character, producing a light, nutty spirit primarily for blending. Rarely bottled as a single malt during its lifetime, Pittyvaich has since gained cult status among collectors through limited Diageo releases. The distillery was demolished in 2002, making its remaining stocks extremely rare and valuable.

Just poured a wee dram, light amber colour, first sniff gives green fruit notes and a hint of strawberry wine, then dark chocolate and marzipan peek through. A touch of orange luxardo and cloves spice it up, with a whisper of wet earth and old Amontillado sherry. On the palate it’s big and punchy but softens nicely, residual tannins linger like walnut oil and bitter chocolate, slightly saline edge reminds me of salted liquorice. Finish is medium‑long, warm enough for a cold night – perfect for a cosy dram. Very good 🥃

Honestly, when I knocked back a dram it hit me with a very pleasing wave of malt extracts and strong marmalade, almost like a spoonful of orange‑zest jam. There was a cheeky bite of bitter oranges and a whiff of new‑plastic‑ish rubber that made me grin – ha, ha. The middle turned surprisingly savoury, a bit of soy sauce and umami creeping in, like a whisper of amontillado sherry. I could even taste prune juice and chestnuts, a faint hint of pine liqueur, and a blackest liquorice that reminded me of a pipe tobacco after‑taste. It was heavy for sure, with a menthol kick that reminded me of Vicks, and a long, very chocolaty finish that lingered like walnut wine. I had to be careful with water, otherwise it would get too messy – a bit of pumpkin and ‘unlikely proteins’ showing up for fun. All in all, pretty extreme but oddly satisfying. 😊

Had this one by the fire last night and it was spot on for the cold. Big and punchy upfront, with loads of that earthy sherry character – reminds me of walking through a damp forest after rain. There's some wet earth and even a hint of wet hessian, like old warehouse beams. The palate's quite drying but in a good way, with bitter chocolate and dark chocolate Brazil nuts mixing in. Crushed walnuts and walnut oil give it a nutty twist, while orange luxardo and maraschino cherry add a fruity kick – almost like a strawberry wine spritzer but with more depth. A touch of salted liquorice and talcum powder weirdly works, though. It’s a proper comfort dram, makes me think of game meats and aged pinot noir. With water, it softens nicely, revealing more red currants and peanuts. The finish is medium-long, leaving that cough medicine and old Amontillado vibe. Not bad at all for a winter warmer. 🥃🔥

Light amber in the glass, a real comfort dramming whisky. Smells like earthy sherry and orange peel, with a hint of cinnamon and cloves. Big and punchy on the palate, got dark chocolate Brazil nuts and crushed walnuts, maybe some nougat too. Softer than expected, with a touch of raspberry jam doughnut. Finish is medium-long, clean with a bit of residual tannins. Perfect for a cold night, makes me think of dunnage warehouses and old Amontillado. 😊

Right, had a wee dram of this one last night and wow, what a journey. 🥃 First thing I got was this lovely earthy sherry hit, almost like walking into a proper dunnage warehouse — that damp wood and hessian smell, you know? Then these green fruit notes came through, like biting into a slightly unripe pear. Got some sultanas and marzipan in there too, reminded me a bit of Christmas cake mix. The nose has this interesting thing going on — a bit of salted liquorice and cloves, maybe a touch of rubber band at first but it opens up nicely. There's something almost like old Amontillado sherry in the background, quite complex. Taking a sip, it's big and punchy on the palate, really coats your mouth. Dark chocolate and crushed walnuts come through straight away, with this pleasant salted meat quality. Get some orange peel and cinnamon after a bit, almost like a Manhattan cocktail vibe. There's a wee hint of cherry heering and nougat too which is lovely. Finish is medium-long, quite drying with residual tannins — bit of bitter chocolate and that cough medicine note some sherried drams have. Wet earth and spices linger. Honestly, perfect for cold weather comfort dramming. 🍂 Would happily have another glass sitting by the fire.
