Just had a pour of this amber dram. Right, it’s big and punchy from the off. Softer on the palate than you’d expect, though. It’s got that earthy sherry, wet earth vibe – like being in a proper dunnage warehouse. Reminds me a bit of an old Amontillado, actually. Loads of red fruit: think raspberry jam doughnut, cherry heering, and red currants. Then there’s this lovely salted meat and salted liquorice note, with some maraschino cherry sweetness. Quite a bit of spice too – cinnamon and cloves. The finish has some residual tannins, is medium-long, and brings in bitter chocolate and more earthy notes. Feels very well-sherried. You get walnut oil, crushed walnuts, and a bit of rubber band interestingly. A few green fruit notes peek through. It’s like a liquid Manhattan cocktail meets a dark chocolate Brazil nut, with a hint of talcum powder on the side. Perfect for cold weather, this. A real comfort dramming whisky. 🥃
