Linkwood Distillery, founded in 1821, became a cornerstone of Diageo's Scotch whisky portfolio following the construction of its second distillery in 1971, garnering exceptional attention from its parent company. The modern facility underwent its first major renovation in 2011, closing for four months to install a new mash tun and automated distillation control systems. A second expansion phase in 2013 added two additional spirit stills and six fermentation washbacks, boosting production capacity by 60% to 5.6 million liters annually. While renovations are standard across Diageo's distillery estate, Linkwood holds particular significance. For over two centuries, its single malt has been prized by successive owners, serving as an indispensable foundation for numerous blended whiskies. Master blenders regard Linkwood's spirit as crucial for contributing complexity, body, and distinctive character to iconic blends such as Johnnie Walker and White Horse. The original 1821 distillery operated alongside the 1971 facility until 1985, utilizing traditional worm tub condensers that produced a slightly heavier, more robust spirit profile. Though the historic site was demolished in 2013, the expanded stillhouse continues production. Remnants include six dunnage warehouses dating from 1872 and a pagoda-roofed kiln. Current production features a 12.5-ton full lauter mash tun, eleven wooden washbacks, and three pairs of stills. Fermentation times range from 65-105 hours over a standard five-day work week. Annual output fluctuates between 3.6 and 5.6 million liters depending on operational schedules. Linkwood's primary official bottling is the 12-Year-Old under Diageo's Flora & Fauna series. In October 2016, a rare 37-Year-Old expression was released as part of the Rare Malts series, distilled in 1978 and bottled at 50.3% ABV.

It hits you straight away, in your face – a rush of old‑style sherry and first‑fill sherry that’s almost shy at first, then gets restless. The palate is mahogany‑rich, with wild unaged eaux‑de‑vie flashes and a hint of kirsch straight from the still, while wheelbarrows of flints and a faint cardboard note sit under luscious dried fruits that are simply wonderful. There’s a powerful splash of old Demerara rum and chocolate filled with rum, a whisper of orange zest, and even a weird note of chicken stock and parsley that somehow works. The finish is very long, calmer but not tamed, a bit like a cigar humidor tucked away in a pantry, with old balsamic vinegar and a whisper of crème de menthe lingering. Nothing beats that feeling when it stands water on the palate – just gorgeous. 😌

The nose is a bit shy but there's this old style sherry thing going on, like a dusty cellar vibe. Then you get hit with more on oranges – proper zesty, almost marmalade-like – and these luscious dried fruits that just make you think of Christmas pudding. The taste? Powerful, restless, like wild beasts rattling around your gob. Chocolate filled with rum comes through, not sweet but dark chocolate from the best plantations with a rum kick. There's something oddly crème de menthe lurking too, and the way it stands water on the palate is proper weird – thick, almost syrupy. Old balsamic vinegar adds this tangy twist, and kirsch straight from the still makes it sharp, like a slap from a fruit bat. The finish is very long, and nothing beats that lingering warmth, though it's got this cardboardy edge that's a bit hard to nose through. Wild unaged eaux-de-vie pops up later, all fiery and untamed, while the sherry influence keeps it grounded. Mahogany? That's the colour of the liquid in the glass, deep and brooding. It's stunning how it all clings together, even when it does not swim too well. Notes of chicken stock and parsley? No idea where they came from, but they're there. Ridden with old Demerara rum, it's a proper mash-up – sweet, spicy, and just a bit bonkers.

Big, dark and a bit wild 😮‍💨 Loads of flinty smoke, old sherry, rum-soaked chocolate and orange peel. Takes a while to open up, proper intense at first. With water it gets calmer, but still feels like a beast. Long, warm finish — mint, balsamic, cigar box and dark choc. Stunning stuff.

Right, so this dram… blimey. Nose is like a bonfire on a beach 🔥🌊 Briny sea air, thick peaty smoke, and just a whisper of honey tryin’ to peek through 🍯 On the palate, it’s rich an’ oily. Smoked bacon crisps, a bit of TCP, then suddenly— stewed orchard fruits. Apple, pear, a wee squeeze of lemon rind. Surprisin’ly sweet in the middle, but the peat never lets go. Finish is looong and warming. Peppery oak, dry campfire ash, and that saltiness comin’ right back 🧂 Feels like standin’ on Islay in a gale. Cheeky little number, this one. Didnae quite know where it was goin’ at first, but by the end I’m grinnin’ like an idiot. Aye, not half bad. 🥃

Proper lush, this. 🥃 Nose hits ye right off with sticky toffe and carmel—dead sweet, like brown sugar. Bit of nuttyness, honey drizzled over warm malt loaf. Oaky whiff there too, but gentle. Sip’s rich, coats the tongue proper oily. Dark fruits comin through, shery soaked raisins n sultanas. Then that oak and spice creep in, a wee grassy tickle at the end. Finish hangs about, golden syrupy warmth. Proper winter dram, innit. 😮‍💨 Defo one for slow sippin.
