Glen Scotia Distillery has experienced closures and multiple ownership changes, but its financial situation has remained stable since private equity fund Exponent Private Equity took over the distillery in 2014. With the support of Exponent Private Equity, Colin Matthews and Nick Rose (former Diageo CFO) drove a £210 million company acquisition plan. Colin Matthews had previously worked at Imperial Tobacco for 16 years. In the first 18 months after the acquisition, Colin Matthews' team invested £25 million in Glen Scotia Distillery and its sister distillery, Loch Lomond Distillery. These funds were used for renovating the distilleries and developing new whiskies. Five years later, the distillery welcomed a new owner. In 2019, Chinese investment company Hillhouse Capital Management acquired the Loch Lomond Group, which may be an excellent opportunity for the distillery to enter the Asian market. Glen Scotia Distillery is equipped with a conventional 2.8-ton cast iron mash tun, nine stainless steel fermentation tanks (with an average fermentation time of 120 hours), and a set of stills. Fermentation times range from a minimum of 70 hours to a maximum of 140 hours. The spirit cut range is 73% to 63% ABV, though the peat-flavored whisky spirit cut range is slightly lower. In 2019, the distillery estimated it could distill 10 batches per week, producing 520,000 liters of new make spirit. Peated whisky production has increased since last year, currently producing one batch of heavy peat (55ppm) and one batch of medium peat (22ppm) whisky every three weeks. The distillery recently switched from heavy oil to liquefied petroleum gas as fuel, a technical change that has reduced carbon emissions. Glen Scotia's regular whisky lineup includes Double Cask, Glen Scotia 15, 18, and 25 years, and the lightly peated cask strength Victoriana. Since 2017, the distillery has launched the 100% first-fill bourbon cask Glen Scotia Harbour, which is exclusive to UK Waitrose supermarkets and Marks & Spencer. In 2017, the distillery also launched its first duty-free limited editions: PX sherry cask Glen Scotia Campbeltown 1832 and Glen Scotia 16 years. On June 19, 2019, the distillery launched a rum cask 2003 limited edition vintage and announced that Glen Scotia 45 years would be launched at the end of 2019.

Had a dram today that felt kinda not big but still complex – whispers of mead, almond paste and a touch of orange blossom, with hints of kumquats and blood oranges. It’s short but clean, a tad more tropical than I expected, with discreet muscaty touches and a bit of sultana sweetness. The palate shows a relative weakness, a bit too loose, yet the drying oak in the attack gives it structure. Feels like a survivor, regaining control after a long day – just normal, really lovely 🥃.

Look, I cracked this open after a long week and honestly didn’t expect much, but blimey it’s such a lovely little surprise 🥃 First you get that drying oak right in the attack, mind, but it’s not quite drying or tea-ish, then it softens out into all these soft honeyed fruits – hints of kumquats, little touches of passion fruits, even a whiff of blood orange and that delicate banana note. There’s that great old white wine vibe running through the whole thing, just a tad more tropical than you’d first guess, plus those discreet muscaty touches, sultanas and even a hint of mead-like sweetness that’s really rather nice, actually. It’s not big at all, just whispering along the whole time, feels totally normal but still weirdly complex, no harsh edges whatsoever – beast isn’t completely dead, not by a long shot 😂 You get a little sandal and cedar wood right at the finish, plus a tiny hint of almond paste and maybe even longans if you’re really paying attention? It’s a bit too subtle for some, maybe a tad too loose on the palate, even has that relative weakness on the palate if you’re being honest, but it’s short but clean, leaves this warm golden feeling that lingers just enough. Proper survivor of a dram, this one. Way too good to just write off.

Took a sip and immediately got this sweet, honeyed fruit vibe – like sultanas and soft pears dancing around. There's a curious hint of kumquats and bergamot that lifts it up, not sure if it's the oak or the aging, but cedar wood lingers in the background. Almond paste gives it a nutty depth, maybe even a touch of mead sweetness? Complex layers here, not quite drying on the palate – more like a whisper of old white wine and tropical papayas. Survivor of some sort, this one, with that "beast isn't completely dead" kick. Micro bottling makes sense, it's got a delicate touch of passion fruits and bananas, but maybe a tad more tropical would’ve nailed it. Still, the balance feels right – regained control after a slightly too loose start. Great dram, even if it's not big in volume. 🥃

It’s a proper sip this one – short but clean on the finish, with a whisper of sandalwood and something oddly like delicate longans lingering in the background. The nose has these discreet muscaty touches, not loud, just there. On the palate, it’s soft and honeyed fruits upfront, almost mead-like but not too sweet. There’s a bit of almond paste and orange blossom in there, normal in a comforting way. The oak hits you early, drying oak in the attack, but it’s not overpowering – more of a survivor, holding its ground. Blood oranges and hints of kumquats dance around, not big or bold but definitely present. Complex, yeah, though it’s not quite drying or tea-ish. Leaves you wanting another sip, honestly. 🥃✨

Honestly, the first sip feels like a whisper of orange blossom drifting over a soft, honeyed fruit backdrop. There’s a delicate banana note that almost sneaks away, and a faint hint of papaya and perhaps a stray longan if you’re paying attention. The bite is short but clean, with a tiny burst of blood orange and bergamot that lifts the whole thing. It’s not overpowering – a bit too loose and subtly weak on the palate, yet there’s a beautiful, almost mead‑like sweetness and a whisper of almond paste that adds complexity. I get a discreet muscaty touch and a flash of passion fruit that makes me think the beast isn’t completely dead, just taking a quiet nap. It’s very worthy of a 90, and after a couple of drams I feel I can actually regain control of the conversation – totally lovely. 😊
