Glen Scotia Distillery has experienced closures and multiple ownership changes, but its financial situation has remained stable since private equity fund Exponent Private Equity took over the distillery in 2014. With the support of Exponent Private Equity, Colin Matthews and Nick Rose (former Diageo CFO) drove a £210 million company acquisition plan. Colin Matthews had previously worked at Imperial Tobacco for 16 years. In the first 18 months after the acquisition, Colin Matthews' team invested £25 million in Glen Scotia Distillery and its sister distillery, Loch Lomond Distillery. These funds were used for renovating the distilleries and developing new whiskies. Five years later, the distillery welcomed a new owner. In 2019, Chinese investment company Hillhouse Capital Management acquired the Loch Lomond Group, which may be an excellent opportunity for the distillery to enter the Asian market. Glen Scotia Distillery is equipped with a conventional 2.8-ton cast iron mash tun, nine stainless steel fermentation tanks (with an average fermentation time of 120 hours), and a set of stills. Fermentation times range from a minimum of 70 hours to a maximum of 140 hours. The spirit cut range is 73% to 63% ABV, though the peat-flavored whisky spirit cut range is slightly lower. In 2019, the distillery estimated it could distill 10 batches per week, producing 520,000 liters of new make spirit. Peated whisky production has increased since last year, currently producing one batch of heavy peat (55ppm) and one batch of medium peat (22ppm) whisky every three weeks. The distillery recently switched from heavy oil to liquefied petroleum gas as fuel, a technical change that has reduced carbon emissions. Glen Scotia's regular whisky lineup includes Double Cask, Glen Scotia 15, 18, and 25 years, and the lightly peated cask strength Victoriana. Since 2017, the distillery has launched the 100% first-fill bourbon cask Glen Scotia Harbour, which is exclusive to UK Waitrose supermarkets and Marks & Spencer. In 2017, the distillery also launched its first duty-free limited editions: PX sherry cask Glen Scotia Campbeltown 1832 and Glen Scotia 16 years. On June 19, 2019, the distillery launched a rum cask 2003 limited edition vintage and announced that Glen Scotia 45 years would be launched at the end of 2019.

Took a sip and immediately got hit with this bright pineapple zest thing, proper fresh and fruity upfront. Then there's this grassy note, not too bad at first, but it starts to get a tad too grassy after a minute or two. Ginger and pepper sneak in, giving it a bit of a kick, almost like a hoppy beer but with more bite. The finish is quite long, lingering with orange zests and this austere, clay-like dryness. Not the sexiest whisky I've had, but the gooseberries and apples keep it interesting. Over time, the grassiness just builds and builds, which is a bit odd, but I don't mind it. Lavender makes a quiet appearance, which is nice, though the rubbery notes at the end are a bit weird. Still, overall, very good for a casual dram. 🥃

Blimey, cracked open this dram last night after work 🤔 Right off the bat it’s a tad too grassy, like sticking your head out of a car window on a country drive, gets even grassier on the second sip tbh. But then that bright pineapple zest and orange zest pops up, plus sweet gooseberries and crisp green apples to balance it out. Halfway through there’s that weird rubbery note, sort of like a cheap fruit chew you’d nick off a mate at primary school? You get chalk and clay undertones too, plus a little lavender hint, pepper and nutmeg tingle at the back of your throat. Finishes quite long, a tad bitter and a bit austere, even has a faint beer-like malty edge. Sort of unsexy, not the most exciting dram but very good for a quiet evening in front of the telly 😅

Bitter hits first, but not in a bad way, more like dark chocolate. There's a weird rubbery note that lingers, makes me think of old tyres somehow. Lavender and ginger come through, a bit perfumed but nice. The finish is quite long, with a hint of clay and chalk that dries the palate out. Orange zests pop up, maybe pineapple too, very fruity. Grass and gooseberries are there, though it's a tad too grassy for my liking. Nutmeg adds warmth, but the overall feel is austere and fresh. Not the sexiest dram, but very good for a quiet evening. 🥃

Tastes a bit rubbery at first, then grassy and quite long. Fruity with orange zests and a hint of lavender, but a bit austere. Nutmeg and ginger linger, with a dark straw finish. Not the sexiest, but it’s got character 😅

Dark straw colour, bit of a gentle nose with lavender and nutmeg dancing in there, makes me think of my gran’s garden in summer. Apples and pineapple zests pop out fruity and bright, but there’s a hint of grass and chalk that’s a tad too grassy for my liking—almost like munching on a lawn. The pepper kicks in late, warming the back of the throat, and the bitter orange zests keep it sharp. Not bad, actually quite very good, but that earthy grass note lingers a bit too long. Still, it’s got character.
