Glen Scotia Distillery has experienced closures and multiple ownership changes, but its financial situation has remained stable since private equity fund Exponent Private Equity took over the distillery in 2014. With the support of Exponent Private Equity, Colin Matthews and Nick Rose (former Diageo CFO) drove a £210 million company acquisition plan. Colin Matthews had previously worked at Imperial Tobacco for 16 years. In the first 18 months after the acquisition, Colin Matthews' team invested £25 million in Glen Scotia Distillery and its sister distillery, Loch Lomond Distillery. These funds were used for renovating the distilleries and developing new whiskies. Five years later, the distillery welcomed a new owner. In 2019, Chinese investment company Hillhouse Capital Management acquired the Loch Lomond Group, which may be an excellent opportunity for the distillery to enter the Asian market. Glen Scotia Distillery is equipped with a conventional 2.8-ton cast iron mash tun, nine stainless steel fermentation tanks (with an average fermentation time of 120 hours), and a set of stills. Fermentation times range from a minimum of 70 hours to a maximum of 140 hours. The spirit cut range is 73% to 63% ABV, though the peat-flavored whisky spirit cut range is slightly lower. In 2019, the distillery estimated it could distill 10 batches per week, producing 520,000 liters of new make spirit. Peated whisky production has increased since last year, currently producing one batch of heavy peat (55ppm) and one batch of medium peat (22ppm) whisky every three weeks. The distillery recently switched from heavy oil to liquefied petroleum gas as fuel, a technical change that has reduced carbon emissions. Glen Scotia's regular whisky lineup includes Double Cask, Glen Scotia 15, 18, and 25 years, and the lightly peated cask strength Victoriana. Since 2017, the distillery has launched the 100% first-fill bourbon cask Glen Scotia Harbour, which is exclusive to UK Waitrose supermarkets and Marks & Spencer. In 2017, the distillery also launched its first duty-free limited editions: PX sherry cask Glen Scotia Campbeltown 1832 and Glen Scotia 16 years. On June 19, 2019, the distillery launched a rum cask 2003 limited edition vintage and announced that Glen Scotia 45 years would be launched at the end of 2019.

Blimey, this one’s such a cracker 👃 Great nose first – all heather honey, pleasantly orangey, fresh oranges, raspberries, even a little whiff of sea water and strawberries, super inviting, very peppery too actually. Nice palate too: apricot, lemon, beeswax, liquorice, nutmeg, faint Highland-Parkish vibes, touch of tobacco and blackcurrants, surprising little hints of gingerbread? Balance has been found perfectly, not yeasty, not bubblegummy, not dirty-ish at all, and not winey either which is a win. Finish is rather long, quite some pepper in the aftertaste, that peppery hit even crouched in the shadows of the flavour, plus a little chilli kick and nutmeg lingering. Filling whisky in red wine wood can really work, eh? It’s notch less 'wow' than the nose but still bloody lovely, no weird leaven offness either.

🥃 Absolute belter of a dram, this. Great nose first off – all heather honey, beeswax, a hint of tobacco just crouched in the shadows, plus gingerbread, Demerara sugar sweetness, fresh raspberries, strawberries, blackcurrants, oranges, lemon, apricot, even a little twang of sea water and that Highland-Parkish heathery vibe. Nice palate too – nutmeg, liquorice, a warm peppery kick, little chilli heat, no yeasty funk, no dirty-ish off notes, not bubblegummy at all, and definitely not winey. Filling whisky in red wine wood can really work when it’s done this right, honestly. Balance has been found perfectly here. Rather long finish, very peppery, leaves a pleasant orangey, leaven-y aftertaste. Notch less 'wow' than the nose but still such a solid, surprising pour. No weird off bits at all, just so drinkable.

Took a sip and immediately got this pleasantly orangey hit, not yeasty or bubblegummy at all. The nose is great—like oranges and heather honey dancing together. On the palate, it’s peppery with a strong pepper kick, maybe from those chillies mixed in? 🍊 There’s Demerara sugar sweetness, nutmeg spice, and a surprising twist of raspberries and blackcurrants. The red wine wood influence is subtle but there, giving it a nice depth without being too winey. Lemon and apricot linger in the finish, which is rather long, and the beeswax adds this smooth, crouched in the shadows texture. Not sure about the pedigree, but it’s a nice dram. Notch less 'wow' but still satisfying. Very peppery, yet balanced. Nice palate, really.

Wow, this one's got a real Highlland-Parkish vibe, like it's crouched in the shadows. First thing I get is blackcurrants and something salty, like sea water, mixed with a bit of old tobacco. The nose is great, honestly. Take a sip and it's rather long on the finish. I'm picking up strawberries and gingerbread, but definitely not bubblegummy. Not winey at all. There's lemon, some heather honey, and that pleasantly orangey note comes through too. Nutmeg adds a little spice. Quite a nice palate. It's not yeasty, not dirty-ish at all. The beeswax and liquorice add a nice layer. A good one for a cold evening. 🥃

A quick dram tonight gave me a nice palate – bright raspberries and apricot up front, then a cheeky hit of pepper that lingered quite long, almost like a gentle chillies whisper. The orange zest and a hint of sea‑water brine kept it fresh, while a subtle blackcurrant and strawberry note tucked themselves in the background. There was a surprising flash of gingerbread and a faint liquorice edge, and the after‑taste kept the pepper marching on. Felt a bit like sitting crouched in the shadows of a summer garden, a bit leavened by the gentle sea breeze. 😊
