Glen Scotia Distillery has experienced closures and multiple ownership changes, but its financial situation has remained stable since private equity fund Exponent Private Equity took over the distillery in 2014. With the support of Exponent Private Equity, Colin Matthews and Nick Rose (former Diageo CFO) drove a £210 million company acquisition plan. Colin Matthews had previously worked at Imperial Tobacco for 16 years. In the first 18 months after the acquisition, Colin Matthews' team invested £25 million in Glen Scotia Distillery and its sister distillery, Loch Lomond Distillery. These funds were used for renovating the distilleries and developing new whiskies. Five years later, the distillery welcomed a new owner. In 2019, Chinese investment company Hillhouse Capital Management acquired the Loch Lomond Group, which may be an excellent opportunity for the distillery to enter the Asian market. Glen Scotia Distillery is equipped with a conventional 2.8-ton cast iron mash tun, nine stainless steel fermentation tanks (with an average fermentation time of 120 hours), and a set of stills. Fermentation times range from a minimum of 70 hours to a maximum of 140 hours. The spirit cut range is 73% to 63% ABV, though the peat-flavored whisky spirit cut range is slightly lower. In 2019, the distillery estimated it could distill 10 batches per week, producing 520,000 liters of new make spirit. Peated whisky production has increased since last year, currently producing one batch of heavy peat (55ppm) and one batch of medium peat (22ppm) whisky every three weeks. The distillery recently switched from heavy oil to liquefied petroleum gas as fuel, a technical change that has reduced carbon emissions. Glen Scotia's regular whisky lineup includes Double Cask, Glen Scotia 15, 18, and 25 years, and the lightly peated cask strength Victoriana. Since 2017, the distillery has launched the 100% first-fill bourbon cask Glen Scotia Harbour, which is exclusive to UK Waitrose supermarkets and Marks & Spencer. In 2017, the distillery also launched its first duty-free limited editions: PX sherry cask Glen Scotia Campbeltown 1832 and Glen Scotia 16 years. On June 19, 2019, the distillery launched a rum cask 2003 limited edition vintage and announced that Glen Scotia 45 years would be launched at the end of 2019.

Gave this a go after my Sunday roast last night, proper treat that 🥃 Colour's that deep dark amber, straight off you get that very oloroso-ish dry sherry kick, plus liquorice and dry raisins tucked in there. Took a sip and it's so very satisfying, not heavy even with all that richness, perfect. You get bitter oranges, leather, more tobacco, lovely walnuts, ripe black cherries and even a little gunpowder mineral tang. That excellent chocolatiness comes through proper strong, black chocolate and a hint of mint that cuts through the bitter acidic coffee base. Fancy a weird luwak-esque note in there too? Whak but it works? Long finish just lingers on, touches of dry fruitcake, glazed chestnuts, even a mint flavoured green tea little zing and that ginger clove cake warmth. Rich and yet not fat, not cloying at all, I could happily have another dram right now 😌

Ah, that’s proper stuff. Starts with a whiff of old leather and tobacco, like my grandad’s study. Then bam—dark chocolate and walnuts, rich but not heavy. Bit of ginger cake warmth, then a sharp twist of bitter orange and mint. Feels like sipping a posh tea with a kick. Long finish, bit dry, but that chocolate just lingers. Lovely.

This dram's got a proper dark amber glow, like looking at an old library shelf. The nose hits you with this rich chocolatiness, almost bitter chocolate, mixed with something like polished wood and a hint of tobacco. On the tongue, it's dry fruitcake and ginger and clove cake all rolled into one, really satisfying. There's a touch of bitter oranges and glazed chestnuts dancing around, while the oak's giving it a very oloroso-ish depth. It's got that sherry thing going on, but the body stays rich and yet not fat, which is nice. You get a whisper of leather and maybe even a odd hint of luwak? Odd, but works. The finish is long, with more of that amontillado warmth and a lingering minty breath. Proper lovely, this one. 🥃

Blimey, this one's got proper depth to it. First thing that hits me is this rich black chocolate and ripe black cherry combo — almost like a fancy dessert at Christmas. There's definitely that amontillado sherry vibe going on, really Very oloroso-ish if you know what I mean. The mouth feel is lovely and smooth, and then you get this polished wood and tobacco thing creeping in. Bit of walnut there too, and I swear I'm getting some ginger and clove cake — like something my nan would bake on a Sunday 😄 There's a mineral edge to it, almost gunpowdery? And that mint comes through like mint flavoured green tea, quite refreshing actually. Dark liquorice underneath, and a bitter chocolate base that's acidic coffee territory for sure. Rich and yet not fat, which is brilliant. The chocolatiness is excellent without being too sweet. That long finish just lingers with this bitter/acidic thing going on — really keeps you thinking about it long after the glass is empty. Proper evening dram this one ☕🥃

Gosh, this one's quite the ride. First thing I get is this excellent chocolatiness, like a square of really fine black chocolate melting on my tongue. Then it opens up to walnuts and these sweet, glazed chestnuts. There's a strange, lovely note I can't quite place... maybe some fancy luwak coffee? It's got that sort of mineral, polished wood quality too. Very oloroso-ish, if that makes sense. Good mouth feel. Mind wanders to mint flavoured green tea and a slice of ginger and clove cake. It's rich and yet not fat at all. I'm finding liquorice and a whiff of fine tobacco as it develops. The finish reminds me of a dry fruitcake, with more bitter chocolate and mint. Finally, there's this lovely burst of ripe black cherries, like a glass of good amontillado sherry next to a cup of acidic coffee. It all settles on a bit of a bitter/acidic base, which I quite like. Dark amber in the glass, with hints of dry raisins and bitter oranges. Perfect for a quiet evening. 🍰🔥
