Brora stands as one of Scotland's most legendary 'ghost distilleries,' having operated from 1819 to 1983 before its closure and miraculous rebirth in 2020. Originally established as Clynelish by the notorious Marquis of Stafford during the Highland Clearances, the distillery was rebuilt in 1896 by James Ainslie, creating a heavily peated maritime malt that became essential to Johnnie Walker blends. After DCL built a new Clynelish distillery in 1967, the original site was renamed Brora and specialized in robust, phenolic whisky for premium blends. During its 'silent era' (1983-2020), remaining stocks became some of the world's most collectible whiskies, commanding auction prices exceeding $10,000 per bottle. Diageo's £35 million restoration preserved two original copper pot stills and vintage equipment, relaunching production in 2020 with an 800,000-liter capacity. The distillery's waxy, sooty, maritime character—reminiscent of burnt heather and sea salt—continues to define its ultra-premium Special Releases and the milestone 40-year-old 200th anniversary edition.

🥃 What a dram, innit? Full gold in the glass, swirling it is mesmerizingly satisfying, smells of smoked raisins, old walnuts even coastal ones, pinesap kiking about too, bit of apple skin, lemon and almost no farmy notes either. First sip hits quick with that 1972-style leather, smoked chartreuse vibe, thick ashes like you plunged your head into an old coal stove for a split second, then salted liquorice and oysters on the side. Mid palate has that very old vin jaune from Jura, more Château-Chalon feel, almost like some kind of fortified Château-Chalon crossed with best finos, bit of wax too, not a working one mind. 17 years of bottle ageing may have done some good, oh la la la la! What a glory, incredibly good, utterly brilliant, stunning even. Maybe the longest ‘40%’ ever cause it drinks so smooth, call the anti-maltoporn brigade! Not too sure the new 35 will manage to beat this utter wonder, that’s for sure.

Whata glory 🥃, this dram is absolutely Brilliant – feels like I’ve plunged my head into an old coal stove, thick ashes and all. Smoky raisins, salted liquorice, a whisper of wax and old walnuts, with a splash of lemon zest. It’s got that 1972‑style depth, almost no farmy notes, and a mesmerizingly satisfying finish that lingers longer than any 40% I’ve tried. Utterly amazing, Stunning, oh la la la la – almost like a fortified Château‑Chalon meets oysters on the coast, pinesap and leather in the background. What a dram!

what a dram! I mean... you plunge your head into an old coal stove, and it's just... utterly amazing? The smoke is there but it's not the main event. It's more like you've stumbled upon a very old vin jaune from Jura, maybe a 1972-style one, and someone's added smoked raisins and thick ashes to it. There's this wax and apple skin note, like the best finos, but then it shifts. Oh la la la la! Some kind of fortified Château-Chalon character, with salted liquorice and walnut liqueur. Almost no farmy notes, just pure, mesmerizingly satisfying complexity. A quick mention of lemon and pinesap cuts through. Leather, but not a working one. Even coastal ones, maybe? And then the finish... smoked chartreuse, old walnuts. It's utterly wonder. Call the anti-maltoporn brigade! This is bigger than many malts at 60% vol, yet maybe the longest ‘40%’ ever on the palate. Stunning. After 17 years of bottle ageing, it’s just Brilliant. 🥃

Blimey, this dram is just mesmerizingly satisfying. Tastes like walnut liqueur with a touch of wax, reminds me of the best finos – oh, and it pairs perfectly with oysters! Almost no farmy notes, more like a Château-Chalon thing going on. Oh la la la la! What a dram 🥃 Leather and salted liquorice hit quick, with a smoked chartreuse vibe – some kind of fortified Château-Chalon, even coastal ones. Old walnuts linger in the finish. Not too sure the new 35 will manage to beat this utter wonder; it's like you plunged your head into an old coal stove, thick ashes but Incredibly good. Utterly amazing, brilliant – what a glory! 😊

Warm and malty, with a bit of honey, oak and gentle spice. Feels cosy rather than heavy — nice wee glow at the end 🥃 A touch of dried fruit too, maybe orange peel-ish.
