Braeval Distillery represents one of the most significant recent additions to the single malt Scotch whisky market. As the final distillery in Chivas Brothers' portfolio to transition from exclusive blending stock to official single malt releases, Braeval embodies the strategic shift toward premium aged expressions in the Speyside region. Located in the remote Braes of Glenlivet, Braeval is aptly named 'The Remote Distillery' in Chivas Brothers' prestigious 'The Secret Speyside Collection.' This isolation, south of Grantown-on-Spey and accessible only via the B9008 through Auchnarrow, echoes its historical role as an illicit distilling haven during the 18th and 19th centuries. Production capabilities include a 9-ton stainless steel full-lauter mash tun, 13 stainless steel washbacks with 70-hour fermentation, and a six-still setup comprising two wash stills with secondary condensers and four spirit stills. The distillery processes 26 mashes weekly, yielding 4.2 million liters of new make spirit annually. The inaugural 2017 visitor center exclusive was a 16-year-old cask strength expression. The 2019 global launch introduced three distinguished age-statement whiskies: a 25-year-old and 27-year-old both matured in American oak barrels at 48% ABV, and a 30-year-old hogshead-matured expression at 50.3% ABV. Initially duty-free exclusives, these expressions entered UK retail distribution in 2020, positioning Braeval as a luxury collectible within the single malt category.

Honestly, this is rather excellent stuff 🥃 First you get that toasted sesame and roasted hazelnuts, then proper real oranges rather than that synthetic Fanta rubbish, with a little triple sec zing. nougat takes centre stage mid-palate, all creamy with gianduja and milk chocolate infused with orange zest, plus a cheeky hint of chestnut honey. It’s got a quite peppery little kick at first, then spices recede, and you get that surprising notes of leek fondue? Weird but lovely, makes me think of marrow dumplings almost. There’s a whiff of walnut liqueur and a slightly metallic tang, but mostly it’s chocolate and orange zest all the way. Finish is long, with that lively sherry bounce and a hint of cinchona, reminds me a bit of the North Star, all warm gold and bright. H2O is essential to bring out all the layers mind you.

It hits the nose with a cheeky hint of toasted sesame and a faint whiff of walnut liqueur, then the palate opens up to a rich chestnut‑honey sweetness that feels a bit like marrow dumplings stewing in the background. The nougat, both black and pink pepper‑spiked, takes centre stage while the peppery spice whispers fade away, leaving an earthy, slightly metallic afterglow. A splash of milk chocolate with orange zest pops up, and there’s even a curious note of leek fondue that makes me think of a cozy kitchen under the North Star. Definitely something rather excellent, but I keep a glass of water handy – H2O is essential for this one. 😊

Just poured a dram and the first thing that hits you is a bright orange zing – real oranges, not some soda‑like sweet‑ness – with a hint of triple‑sec that makes you think of a cheeky cocktail. There's a warm gold glow on the nose, then toasted sesame and black nougat jump forward, the nougat really takes centre stage. As it settles, you get a gentle earthiness and a whisper of roasted hazelnuts, while a touch of pink pepper adds a subtle peppery bite. The middle rounds out with milk chocolate and orange zest, almost like a chestnut‑honey truffle, and there’s a faint metallic edge that keeps things interesting. Finish is long, walnut‑laden and a smidge of walnut liqueur lingers, leaving a pleasant, almost sherry‑like warmth. Pretty excellent stuff! 😊

First sip, honestly, it’s quite lively. Got this lovely roasted hazelnut and chocolate thing going on, maybe a touch of orange zest in there? Really reminds me of a good chocolate orange cake. 🍫 Then it opens up. There’s this intriguing, almost earthy note… and wait, is that toasted sesame? Definitely something nutty, like black nougat or that fancy gianduja. The spices kind of fade back after a bit. What’s surprising is this hint of… leek fondue? Oddly comforting, like a memory of a Sunday lunch. There’s a slight metallic edge, but it’s quickly wrapped in this gorgeous chestnut honey sweetness. The finish has a real citrus zing – like actual oranges, not the fizzy drink kind. Overall, it’s a bit particular, but in a really good way. Lively, complex, keeps you guessing. Excellent stuff. 👍

Quite warm and cosy, with a bit of honey, oak and dried fruit. Feels smooth enough, with a gentle spice that hangs about nicely 🥃 Bit of a smoky, nutty finish too — proper comforting on a chilly evening.
