In just the past 5 years, visitor numbers to Scotch whisky distilleries have nearly doubled. In 2018, approximately 2 million people visited distilleries to learn more about Scotch whisky. One might think that reputation and proximity to main roads are prerequisites for attracting large numbers of visitors, but this is not the case. Among the 5 distilleries most popular with visitors, 3 are on islands—Arran, Skye, and Harris. Perhaps most surprising is Harris distillery on the remote Outer Hebrides, which attracted over 90,000 visitors in 2018, and this was only its third year of operation! Blair Athol Distillery, meanwhile, has consistently benefited from traffic on the A9 highway heading north from Edinburgh to the Highlands. The distillery is the most visited of all Diageo distilleries, receiving 89,000 visitors in 2018. In the past year, the distillery has also developed a new feature: converting a disused Clynelish mashtun into a whisky tasting bar! Blair Athol is the spiritual home of Bell's blended whisky. The connection was established in 1896 when Bell was just starting out, and this relationship became even closer when Bell purchased the distillery in 1933. Arthur Bell & Sons, the creators of the Bell's brand, remained an independent family business far longer than most Scottish traditional family enterprises, only being acquired by Guinness in 1985 before merging into Diageo Group. The distillery's equipment includes an 8.2-ton semi-lauter mashtun, 6 stainless steel washbacks, and 2 stills. Most of the spirit produced for Bell's matures in bourbon casks, with the remainder in sherry casks. Over the past few years, the distillery has operated 5 days a week, producing 12 mashes weekly, which translates to approximately 2 million liters of new make spirit. Blair Athol also employs both short (46 hours) and long (104 hours) fermentation times. Due to the incorporation of a cloudy wort, the new make spirit carries distinct nutty and malty flavors. The only official regular bottling is a 12-year-old expression in the Flora & Fauna series. Additionally, in autumn 2017, a 23-year-old expression matured in European oak sherry casks was released as part of Diageo's Special Releases series.

Had a dram that felt geared towards breads – warm, toasty notes with sweet spices and a hint of kumquat zest. The palate was tight, zesty spiciness dancing with green peppercorn and a whisper of bergamot. Mid‑sip there’s a genuine Jerezian feeling, like dried fruit soaked in sherry, then a flash of citron liqueur brightness. Aftertaste lingers with smoked walnuts, eucalyptus and a touch of vaporub‑like coolness, finishing on bitter chocolate and a bubblegum + walnuts combo that’s just awesome 😄. Gold‑coloured liquid, great fun to sip, definitely a export exclusive vibe.

I took a drink and instantly it felt like a cheeky bubblegum with a nutty crunch, then a splash of bitters with a shot of mustard and citrus, the green peppercorn tickles and a hint of eucalyptus like a fresh walk in the park. It lands long, with a slight smoky walnut bite, then a sweet spice hit—sort of like a bright, zesty Pad Thai vibe. The aftertaste drips like golden honey. Made me think of the good old days on a pub evening, a big laugh with a cigar and a nip of mint. Totally awesome. 😏

Oh, this one’s a proper stunner—like stumbling into your nan’s old kitchen after a long day, all the spices still warm from the oven. First sip hits like a proper Pad Thai, that zesty spiciness cutting through with just enough citrus to make you think of a lemon drop in a gin and tonic. But no, it’s deeper than that—like a cigar you’ve been saving for a special night, that first drag of smoke and sweet tobacco, but with a twist of something else entirely. The aftertaste? Oh, it lingers like a good old memory—mustard and mint playing tag, then suddenly you’re back in a Jerez bodega, the sun on your face, the air thick with eucalyptus and the faintest whisper of that bubblegum-walnut combo you’d never expect in a whisky. And the green peppercorn? That’s the little kick that makes you grin, like someone’s slipped a pinch of something naughty into your tea. The bitter chocolate’s there too, slow and satisfying, like unwrapping a gold bar on Christmas morning. And the whole thing’s so cleverly put together, it’s almost a shame to finish it—like a proper old embrocation, rubbing warmth into your bones when you least expect it. Absolute joy in a glass. 🥃

This one's a real trip. Right off the bat, you get this zesty spiciness, like green peppercorn and a hint of mustard. Then it opens up into all these lovely citrusy notes—bergamots, a bit of citron liqueur, even something like kumquats. It’s weirdly nostalgic, kind of reminds me of old embrocations and a touch of vaporub, but in a good way? The aftertaste is long and has this genuine Jerezian feeling with smoked walnuts and a touch of bitter chocolate. Absolutely awesome. 👌

Crikey, this one's absolutely awesome right from the first sip 🥃 Right, so there's this lovely breadiness going on, like proper fresh sourdough or something. Then you get hit with these sweet spices - reminds me a bit of Pad Thai actually, with a touch of green peppercorn sneaking in. The bubblegum and walnuts combo is quite mad but works somehow? Smoked walnuts too, bit like sitting round a bonfire. Oh and there's kumquats and bergamots giving it a citrusy kick that keeps things interesting. Bit of bitter chocolate comes through, maybe a hint of mustard warmth. There's something nostalgic about it all, really takes you back to the good old days. The aftertaste is proper long, keeps going and going. Faint touch of vaporub which is... odd but not bad? Slight hashish note lurking in there somewhere. Honestly, feels like something special, maybe an export exclusive you'd be lucky to get your hands on 🤷‍♂️ Would definitely pour another.
