In just the past 5 years, visitor numbers to Scotch whisky distilleries have nearly doubled. In 2018, approximately 2 million people visited distilleries to learn more about Scotch whisky. One might think that reputation and proximity to main roads are prerequisites for attracting large numbers of visitors, but this is not the case. Among the 5 distilleries most popular with visitors, 3 are on islands—Arran, Skye, and Harris. Perhaps most surprising is Harris distillery on the remote Outer Hebrides, which attracted over 90,000 visitors in 2018, and this was only its third year of operation! Blair Athol Distillery, meanwhile, has consistently benefited from traffic on the A9 highway heading north from Edinburgh to the Highlands. The distillery is the most visited of all Diageo distilleries, receiving 89,000 visitors in 2018. In the past year, the distillery has also developed a new feature: converting a disused Clynelish mashtun into a whisky tasting bar! Blair Athol is the spiritual home of Bell's blended whisky. The connection was established in 1896 when Bell was just starting out, and this relationship became even closer when Bell purchased the distillery in 1933. Arthur Bell & Sons, the creators of the Bell's brand, remained an independent family business far longer than most Scottish traditional family enterprises, only being acquired by Guinness in 1985 before merging into Diageo Group. The distillery's equipment includes an 8.2-ton semi-lauter mashtun, 6 stainless steel washbacks, and 2 stills. Most of the spirit produced for Bell's matures in bourbon casks, with the remainder in sherry casks. Over the past few years, the distillery has operated 5 days a week, producing 12 mashes weekly, which translates to approximately 2 million liters of new make spirit. Blair Athol also employs both short (46 hours) and long (104 hours) fermentation times. Due to the incorporation of a cloudy wort, the new make spirit carries distinct nutty and malty flavors. The only official regular bottling is a 12-year-old expression in the Flora & Fauna series. Additionally, in autumn 2017, a 23-year-old expression matured in European oak sherry casks was released as part of Diageo's Special Releases series.

First sip feels a bit tight and a tad stuffy at first, then the sweet Marsala and raisins kick in, with a hint of orange blossom and a touch of allspice. Reminds me of a huge fresh panettone, muffins and breads and cakes, doughy sweetness, kinda like gold in the glass. A tad tea‑ish on the finish, but the high strength gives it a warm kick. 😊

Just poured a dram of this and wow, it's like someone bottled a Christmas bakery. The nose hits you with this huge fresh panettone vibe – sweet doughs, raisins kicking in, all those warm spices. Initially a bit stuffy, but then it opens up into this long, gold finish with hints of amontillado and sweet Marsala. Tastes like the Chairman of the Alsatian Panettone Club had a lovechild with a whisky cask, but in a good way. There's a subtle tea-ish note that lingers, and the caky texture reminds me of scones and focaccia. Technically perfect? Maybe. Just really excellent, definitely feels like a proper UK exclusive treat. 😋🥃

Oof, first sip’s a bit like biting into a fresh panettone straight from the oven—golden, sweet doughs everywhere, raisins kicking in like little chewy surprises. 🍞✨ Then it hits with this allspice combo that’s proper cosy, like a bakery tray left too long in the oven. High strength but not overpowering, just a tad stuffy at first before it relaxes into orange blossom and that Marsala sweetness. Feels like a fancy scone with extra raisins, honestly. Long finish lingers like the last crumbs of a focaccia you’ve been nibbling for hours. Technically perfect? Probably. But honestly, it just tastes like a lovely, slightly chaotic afternoon in a patisserie.

Poured a dram of this tonight - lovely gold colour in the glass. High strength but technically perfect, doesn't feel rough at all. The sweet Marsala notes hit me straight away, loads of wonderful raisins kicking in. Getting that amontillado character too, really nice. It's like walking into a bakery - breads and cakes, sweet doughs, even a hint of muffins and scones 🍞 A huge fresh panettone comes to mind honestly, with orange blossom and that allspice combo warming things up. Quite caky if you know what I mean. Feels like I should be the Chairman of the Alsatian Panettone Club 😄 It's rather tight and structured though. Might be a little too tea-ish for some. Definitely not a great swimmer - tried a drop of water and it just fell apart a bit. But the finish is long and it's a UK exclusive so can't complain really. Excellent stuff altogether.

The first sip hits with this sweet Marsala vibe, like rich doughs from a bakery. There's wonderful raisins and orange blossom swirling around, though it feels a little too tea-ish for me at first. Then the allspice combo kicks in, and wow, it's like stepping into a huge fresh panettone factory! 🍰 All breads and cakes, scones, and muffins. The high strength gives it a rather tight mouthfeel, not a great swimmer if you add water. But stick with it – the raisins kicking in later bring this gorgeous, golden finish that just lingers. Technically perfect, and that long, caky aftertaste is excellent. 👌 A proper treat for the UK exclusive club.
