Benrinnes Distillery is situated at the foot of Ben Rinnes mountain, a renowned natural landmark in southern Speyside. At its 840-meter summit, visitors can enjoy panoramic views across eight Scottish counties. The distillery takes its name from this mountain and shares its water source—drawn from mountain wells—with four neighboring distilleries: Aberlour, Allt-a-Bhainne, Dailuaine, and Glenfarclas. The first Benrinnes distillery was established in 1826, though no traces remain today; it stood only a few kilometers from the current site. The present distillery was constructed in the 1950s. In autumn 2012, Benrinnes underwent a major modernization, including full automation of the distillation process and construction of a new control room. The facility features an 8.5-ton semi-lauter mash tun, eight Oregon pine washbacks with fermentation times of 65-100 hours, two wash stills, and four spirit stills. From 1966 until recently, Benrinnes practiced partial triple distillation, a process now discontinued in favor of a configuration using one wash still paired with two spirit stills. The distillery employs cast iron worm tub condensers, which impart a subtle sulfurous character to the new make spirit. With wide cut points ranging from 73% to 58% ABV, Benrinnes produces a robust, meaty new make. Production operates on two alternating schedules: a seven-day week yielding 21 mashes, or a five-day week yielding 15 mashes. The majority of Benrinnes' output supplies blended Scotch whiskies including J&B, Johnnie Walker, and Crawford's 3 Star. The sole official bottling is the 15-year-old Flora & Fauna expression. Limited releases include a 1996 vintage from the Manager's Choice series (2010) and a 21-year-old, 57% ABV special release in autumn 2014.

Right, had this the other night and bloody hell, it’s proper punchy first off, right? 🥃 Light amber colour, then that bright concentrated mint tea hit right at the start, followed by a weird but lovely whiff of cough mixtures and camphor, like my nan’s old chest rub but way nicer. Then it softens into all these crystalised tropical fruit bits, way fruitier than I expected, and that active sherry cask comes through with quince and prunes, gloopy hardwood resins giving it real weight, not watery at all. Finish is much longer than I thought it’d be, all soft earthiness and polished hardwoods, that sleek waxiness and beeswax note lingers, even a hint of canvas and furniture polish? Weird but proper nice, more polished than I expected, way better than I thought it’d be tbh.

Blimey, this one’s a proper treat! First sip hits you with this really milky, creamy thing – almost like pouring custard straight in. Then the sherry kicks in proper, lots of it, sweet and rich like those stickies me nan used to make. Got this caramel going on, proper deep and sticky, reminds me of crème caramel left out in the sun. The longer it sits, the more those dried orange bits start peeking through, which is a nice surprise. Oak’s there too, but not too heavy, just enough to give it some backbone. Finish is long and mellow, hangs around like a good night at the pub. Not too fizzy or complicated, just straightforward and satisfying. Definitely a keeper. 🥃

Gave this a proper nosing first. Blimey, there's this nervous, almost menthol-like note right up front, mixed with some dried citrus peel and light tropical fruits. Quite the first impression! Taking a sip, it's fruitier than I expected, with some citrons and crystalised bits. Then that sherry cask influence really shows up – it's got that polished hardwood, a touch of furniture polish, and some gloopy resins. Feels quite weighty and textural in the mouth, almost fattier, with a bit of olive oil and a sleek waxiness that coats everything. Digging deeper, I get hints of asparagus and a soft earthiness, maybe some canvas. There's a touch of cough mixture and camphor, plus a good kick of punchy pine resin and pine cones. The beeswax and ointments notes give it a proper, concentrated character. The finish is where it really shines. It's much longer, brighter, and better than I hoped. That polished, waxy note lingers, along with a slightly minty aftertaste. Really something. 👍

Just gave this a try at the end of the day – the nose hits you with sherry and oak, a touch of dried orange, then a milky opening that feels like a spoonful of caramel. No sulphury notes whatsoever, so it stays clean. On the palate it’s very classical – sweet, vinous, like burnt cake and dark chocolate swirling together, and more and more caramel comes forward as it goes on. By the time the long finish rolls round I even pick up a faint hint of fresh parsley, which is oddly pleasant. Very nice one for anyone who loves caramel and sherried malt 😊

Just poured a dram that’s loud and clear – light amber in the glass, mint tea aroma up front, then soft earthiness with quince and light tropical fruits, a touch of Benrinnes character. The body feels fattier with waxes, sleek waxiness, a hint of furniture polish, finishing with menthol, camphor and a much longer aftertaste of cough mixtures. 😊
