Benrinnes Distillery is situated at the foot of Ben Rinnes mountain, a renowned natural landmark in southern Speyside. At its 840-meter summit, visitors can enjoy panoramic views across eight Scottish counties. The distillery takes its name from this mountain and shares its water source—drawn from mountain wells—with four neighboring distilleries: Aberlour, Allt-a-Bhainne, Dailuaine, and Glenfarclas. The first Benrinnes distillery was established in 1826, though no traces remain today; it stood only a few kilometers from the current site. The present distillery was constructed in the 1950s. In autumn 2012, Benrinnes underwent a major modernization, including full automation of the distillation process and construction of a new control room. The facility features an 8.5-ton semi-lauter mash tun, eight Oregon pine washbacks with fermentation times of 65-100 hours, two wash stills, and four spirit stills. From 1966 until recently, Benrinnes practiced partial triple distillation, a process now discontinued in favor of a configuration using one wash still paired with two spirit stills. The distillery employs cast iron worm tub condensers, which impart a subtle sulfurous character to the new make spirit. With wide cut points ranging from 73% to 58% ABV, Benrinnes produces a robust, meaty new make. Production operates on two alternating schedules: a seven-day week yielding 21 mashes, or a five-day week yielding 15 mashes. The majority of Benrinnes' output supplies blended Scotch whiskies including J&B, Johnnie Walker, and Crawford's 3 Star. The sole official bottling is the 15-year-old Flora & Fauna expression. Limited releases include a 1996 vintage from the Manager's Choice series (2010) and a 21-year-old, 57% ABV special release in autumn 2014.

🥃 Just had a glass and the first hit is that raw liquid chocolate bitter, with a whiff of fresh parsley and green grasses straight off the bat. Then you get that earthy leaves background, little nutty walnut notes, even that faint pebbly mineral dry tang half way through. Nearly joked I’d need a glass of water to chase it at one point, kept asking for water cause it was so dry it made my mouth feel like dry rocks 😂 Mustard’s there too if you pay attention, super subtle. The finish is long and superbly dry, no sweetness at all till the very very end of the aftertaste where there’s a tiny little sweet pop, reminds me of eating sushi with a dab of wasabi. Like this style very much, excellent too honestly.

Blimey, this one's proper dry. Like, absolutely bone-dry — no sweetness at all until this tiny hint creeps in right at the very end of the aftertaste. Kind of catches you off guard. First thing I got was bitter caramel and bitter chocolate, almost like raw liquid chocolate that's been left out too long. Then there's this earthier background — gravel, pebbles, dry rocks, like walking on a path after rain's dried up. Bit of walnut coming through, some grasses and leaves too. Quite savoury overall. The horseradish is absolutely everywhere honestly, and there's mustard there as well — made me think of proper sushi with wasabi, not joking 😂 It's quite a beast, this one. Might wreck your vertebras if you're not ready for it. Had to ask for water at one point ngl. The finish is long and superbly dry. Genuinely excellent stuff, but I did like the PX a little better if I'm honest — just had a touch more going on for me. Anyway, solid dram. Would absolutely have again. 🥃

Just poured a dram – first whiff is all walnuts and autumn leaves, then bam, horseradish in abundance hits you. Makes me think of grasses and verdejo, though that’s probably the wine geek in me talking 😅 It’s long and superbly dry, without the tiniest bit of sweetness. Got a real spine to it, leaves you asking for water, honestly could wreck your vertebras if you’re not careful. Notes of wasabi and pebbles come through, with a bit of mustard. I like this style very much. Hints of cracked pepper and bitter caramel too – excellent stuff. Strangely makes me crave sushi; there’s this earthier background that lingers.

Lovely cosy dram 🥃 Soft honey and oak, a bit of spice, with a warm, slightly smoky finish. Feels easy-going, like a quiet night in. Bit moreish tbh 🙂

Ah, luv a good whisky! 🥃 The aroma is just luvly – vanilla, oak, maybe sum caramel. On the sip, it's so smoth, with a bit of spice and a sweet aftertaset. Really warms you up on a cold evning. Cheers! 😋
