Founded in 1923 by Shinjiro Torii, the visionary founder of Suntory, Yamazaki Distillery stands as the birthplace of Japanese whisky. Nestled on the outskirts of Kyoto at the confluence of three pristine rivers, Torii selected this location for its exceptional soft water and unique misty climate—ideal conditions for whisky maturation. After nearly a century of meticulous craftsmanship and dedication to the Japanese art of monozukuri, Yamazaki Single Malt Whisky has transcended its origins to achieve global icon status. The distillery's expressions have consistently earned the highest honors at the world's most prestigious spirits competitions, including the International Spirits Challenge (ISC), International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC), and San Francisco World Spirits Competition (SFWSC), amassing numerous gold medals and 'World's Best Whisky' titles. This recognition from international whisky judges, master blenders, and connoisseurs worldwide has cemented Yamazaki's reputation as a pioneer that redefined the global whisky landscape, proving that world-class single malt could be crafted outside of Scotland.

Just been trying this one. Colour's a lovely full gold. Nose is very herbal – eucalyptus, camphor, mint, menthol, aniseed – loads of herbs. No peat, just a gorgeous genuine natural vanilla sweetness, like marshmallows. Tastes very simple when unreduced, but the quality's high. Honey, yellow plums, fresh fruits, not complex at all. There's a faint soapiness, probably from the newish oak. Add water and you get more herbalness, a little sugary, and the finish is quite long. It's got that Japanese modernity vibe, a proper Bauhaus whisky. No real further development, but the perfect vanilla stays. A bit more standard than some, but I like it.

Honestly, this is such a nice, easy dram to sip on 🥃 No peat at all, which is a total win for me. The full vanilla-ed profile is spot on, that perfect genuine natural vanilla hits first, right? You can tell it’s that Madagascar vanilla too, so rich. Then you get fresh fruits, bright yellow plums, a good hit of honey, even hints of soft herbs, a little aniseed, mint, even that faint menthol and eucalyptus zing, like a tiny hint of camphor in there? There’s newish oak too, not too sharp at all, and a sugary sweet note that feels exactly like a fluffy marshmallow. It’s not complex at all, very simple, pretty standard stuff but the quality really does stay so high, no rough bits anywhere. The finish is quite long, warm, the liquid’s full gold in the glass, and there’s that faint soapiness at the very end that’s weirdly pleasant? Lol. The Japanese modernity vibe comes through in how clean and bright it is, no weird off notes. Perfect for kicking back after work, honestly.

Just poured a dram and the first thing I notice is the full gold colour, almost like a mellow sunrise. The nose is simple but comforting – a touch of mint and fresh herbs, a hint of aniseed, and that perfect natural vanilla you can almost taste. On the palate it’s sugary and smooth, like marshmallows melting in your mouth, with a whisper of eucalyptus and a very gentle newish oak that doesn’t try to be too clever. No peat at all, just a clean, slightly long finish that leaves a soft vanilla after‑taste. Feels like a little Bauhaus‑style whisky – straightforward, honest, and surprisingly satisfying. 😊

Just poured a neat dram and the colour’s a deep full‑gold, almost like liquid sunshine. The nose is simple‑minded, straight‑up vanilla that feels genuine, like real Madagascan beans, with a hint of fresh fruit – think yellow plums and a splash of citrusy mint. On the palate a soft, sugary sweetness comes through, a touch of honey and marshmallow fluff, then a gentle rush of eucalyptus and menthol that tingles like a cool breeze on a summer’s day. There’s a faint camphor‑herb edge and just a whisper of aniseed, but nothing overtly peaty or heavy. The newish oak gives a mild, almost buttery backdrop and the finish is quite long, lingering with that full vanilla‑ed profile and a tiny bit of soap‑like smoothness. All in all, a very pleasant, not overly complex sip that still feels top‑notch. 😊

Quite lovely this one. First whiff is all sweet vanilla, like proper vanilla ice cream, and not a hint of smoke. 🍦 Then there's this fresh, leafy thing... eucalyptus maybe? Like a walk in a cool greenhouse. A bit of aniseed peeks through too. The finish is nice and long, with that vanilla hanging around and some fresh pear or something. Very clean and well-made. 😊
