Founded in 1923 by Shinjiro Torii, the visionary founder of Suntory, Yamazaki Distillery stands as the birthplace of Japanese whisky. Nestled on the outskirts of Kyoto at the confluence of three pristine rivers, Torii selected this location for its exceptional soft water and unique misty climate—ideal conditions for whisky maturation. After nearly a century of meticulous craftsmanship and dedication to the Japanese art of monozukuri, Yamazaki Single Malt Whisky has transcended its origins to achieve global icon status. The distillery's expressions have consistently earned the highest honors at the world's most prestigious spirits competitions, including the International Spirits Challenge (ISC), International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC), and San Francisco World Spirits Competition (SFWSC), amassing numerous gold medals and 'World's Best Whisky' titles. This recognition from international whisky judges, master blenders, and connoisseurs worldwide has cemented Yamazaki's reputation as a pioneer that redefined the global whisky landscape, proving that world-class single malt could be crafted outside of Scotland.

Poured a glass of this lovely gold liquid tonight. It’s a tad narrower on the nose at first, but a drop of water unleashed so many more aromas! Got loads of mango and coconut-driven fruitiness, with vanilla and fresh lemon zests. It’s got less oak than expected, making the fruitiness feel more immediate and easy. Really clean and fresh, with just a faint whiff of fresh mushrooms and humus in the background. It’s super close to that previous 1986 we had, honestly hard to decide between both 1986s now. Quite superb now with that long citrusy finish 🥃

Pale gold in the glass, really fresh and clean. I get easy mango and coconut fruit straight away, then more grapefruit and citrusy bits than I expected 🍊 With a splash of water it opens up nicely, a little vanilla, white oak, even a faint earthy whiff like fresh mushrooms and humus. Feels lighter on the fruit, less oaky, but still long and lovely. Quite close to that previous ’86 vibe, honestly.
