Tullibardine Distillery, nestled in the heart of the Scottish Highlands, has a remarkable story of resurrection and reinvention. After lying silent for a decade, the distillery was acquired in 2003 by whisky industry veterans Michael Beamish and Doug Ross, former directors of DCL and United Spirits. Their vision was ambitious: to restore the distillery to its former glory while integrating it with an adjacent commercial complex to create a unique whisky destination. Despite their expertise in distillery revival, the 2008 financial crisis and subsequent real estate market collapse forced a strategic reassessment. The economic downturn shuttered most of the commercial center's retail operations, challenging the original business model. By 2008, even with positive balance sheet indicators from 2007, the owners began exploring acquisition opportunities. The turning point came in 2013 when French spirits group Picard Vins & Spiritueux recognized the distillery's potential. Under new ownership, Tullibardine underwent a dramatic transformation. The once-chaotic production was streamlined into a sophisticated portfolio of distinctive expressions. The shuttered commercial center was ingeniously repurposed into a state-of-the-art visitor experience center, complete with bottling lines, blending rooms, expanded warehousing, and a specialized cask workshop. Today, Tullibardine serves as the spiritual home for the renowned Highland Queen blend, while establishing its own prestigious single malt identity. The compact yet efficient facility features a 6.2-ton semi-lauter stainless steel mash tun, nine fermenters with a 55-60 hour fermentation period, two 21,000-liter wash stills, and two 16,000-liter spirit stills. Production capacity reached 2.8 million liters of new spirit in 2019, with 26-27 mashes weekly. All spirit matures initially in premium bourbon casks. The core range showcases innovative cask finishes: the non-age-statement Sovereign (bourbon), 225 (Château wine casks), 228 (Burgundy casks), and 500 (Sherry casks), complemented by aged statements of 20 and 25 years. The prestigious Custodian's Collection, launched in 2015, features exceptional vintages including a landmark 1964 release in 2019. The Murray 2004, the distillery's first cask strength bottling since 2000, debuted to critical acclaim, followed by a Marsala cask edition in October 2018.

This dram hits you with a proper punch straight away – the Ethiopian mocha and pale white wine notes are pretty bold, but not overpowering. There's this lovely bitterness that reminds me of bitter oranges and grilled aubergines, which is oddly satisfying. The manzanilla comes through clearly, a bit chalky and with a hint of charred wood, almost like paraffin in the mix. Green walnuts add a strange but intriguing twist to it. It's got low alcohol but still feels remarkably powerful on the palate. Aftertaste lingers with mustard and a touch of soot and ashes – not mucky or anything, just ultra-authentic and superb. Very impressive for something so typical, really. No cardboardy or musty stuff here, just pure character.

First sip hits you with this really distinctive manzanilla and pale white wine vibe, like a proper sherry cask dream 🥂. There's this abundance of soot and ashes that's quite bold, but in a good way – reminds me of burnt toast on a Sunday morning. The green walnuts come through loud and clear, giving it a weirdly nutty, almost bitter twist, and the charred and mustardy side makes me think of grilled aubergines at a barbecue. It’s got this leathery, tobacco-y depth too, like an old armchair by the fire. The seawater note is oddly refreshing, cutting through the richness, while the Ethiopian mocha and bitter, acidic coffee add a dark, earthy kick. Ultra-authentic, I’d say – the chalky texture and paraffin hints make it feel like something your granddad might’ve kept in a shed. Remarkably powerful, though, and that lovely bitterness lingers just right. Superb stuff, actually.

This one’s like sipping by the seaside, honestly. 🌊 First impression is this pale white wine colour, very light. The smell… straight away there’s an Ethiopian mocha vibe, bitter and acidic, then a wave of seawater hits you. It’s quite specific, like manzanilla but richer. 😳 Digging in, it’s got this charred wood and mustardy edge, a bit like grilled aubergines mixed with soot and ashes. There’s a chalky texture and a lovely, lingering bitterness, almost like bitter oranges or green walnuts on the finish. 🥜 Surprisingly low in alcohol kick, which makes it easy. No musty or cardboard notes at all – it’s ultra-authentic and very distinctive. The finish is medium length, with that fantastic leather and tobacco lingering. Really impressive stuff. 👍

Quite cosy on the nose — bit of honey, soft oak and a wee citrus lift 🍯 Sips warm and mellow, with vanilla, toasted nuts and a gentle spice. Finish is easy, slightly dry, and nicely comforting. Proper nice for a slow evening dram 🥃

Ooh, that's a proper lovely one! 🤩 First thing you get is this wave of warm vanilla and baked fruit... like walking past a baker's in the morning. Then comes a hint of citrus peel, zesty and sharp. 🍋 The smoke is there, but it's not a bonfire. More like a distant campfire on a chilly night, very polite and warming. 🔥 On the tongue, it's all creamy toffee and stewed apples. There's a touch of spice at the back – cinnamon, maybe a clove? – that keeps it interesting. The finish is long and dry, with that lovely oak coming through. A proper autumn dram, that. Might have it with a splash of water to open up those fruit notes even more. 🥃 Solid stuff. Cheers! 🥂
