Tomatin: In 2005, Tomatin decided to forge its own path. At year-end, they distilled a batch of whisky using Optic barley peated to 15ppm and filled them into various cask types. Eight years later, a distinctive Tomatin single malt brand emerged—Cù Bòcan. Over the following six years, the distillery released numerous expressions under this line. Despite its popularity, Tomatin felt it was time for a brand realignment. In summer 2019, three new Cù Bòcan whiskies launched: the core Signature, plus Creation #1 and Creation #2. Creation #1 is finished in a combination of Black Isle Brewery Imperial Stout casks and Bacalhôa Moscatel De Setúbal wine casks, while Creation #2 matures in Japanese shōchū casks and European virgin oak casks. The distillery features a nine-tonne full-lauter stainless steel mash tun, twelve stainless steel fermentation tanks (54-110 hour fermentation), and six stills. Its 2019 production target was 18 million liters, including two weeks dedicated to peated whisky production at 40ppm. The core range includes Legacy, 12, 18, 30, and 36 Year Old, plus Tomatin Cask Strength, Tomatin Port Cask 14 Year Old, and Tomatin First Fill Bourbon Cask UK Exclusive. The 30 Year Old joined in 2018. Limited releases feature the Five Virtues series (Wood, Fire, Earth, Water, Metal), each cask-finished for unique profiles. The Warehouse 6 Collection includes Tomatin 40 Year Old and the recent 1975 Oloroso Cask release. Tomatin 50 Year Old, one of the distillery's most historic releases, debuted in 2018. Travel retail exclusives include 8, 12, 15, and 40 Year Old expressions. The peated portfolio is represented by Cù Bòcan Signature, Cù Bòcan Creation #1, and Cù Bòcan Creation #2.

Blimey, this one's got some interesting notes, innit? 🤔 I'm getting a bit of old wood, like a vintage armchair, and some young citrusy vibes, quite refreshing, really. It's a bit long, though, and not the prettiest side, if you know what I mean. There's a bit of sourness, like oversteeped tea, and some bitter oak, which is a bit overwhelming. I'm also getting some pine resin and tomato leaves, which is a bit weird, but not entirely unpleasant. Not sure it's a perfect match, but it's a good one, I suppose. The spent lees add a bit of depth, and the gold colour is quite nice, but overall, it's a bit of a mixed bag, if you ask me. Still, worth a try, I reckon 🥃

Ooh, this one’s got a proper zing to it—like fresh blood oranges and that sharp tang of strawberry yoghurt dancing about. There’s a bit of pine resin lurking in the background, giving it that resinous kick you’d get from a walk through a pine forest. 🌲 A touch of old wood sneaks in too, like a well-worn leather armchair in a country pub. The oak’s there, but not overpowering—just a tad on the woody side, like a whisper rather than a shout. And those spices? A bit gassy, almost like the fizz of a just-opened ginger beer. Not the prettiest on the nose, but who cares when it’s this lively? The finish lingers long enough to keep you guessing, with a hint of bitter oak creeping in at the end. Almost no red berries to be seen, but honestly? I’m not complaining.

This one's a nice gold. Getting spent lees and blood oranges straight away. It's a tad on the oaky side, showing not the prettiest side with notes of old wood. There's some pine resin and tomato leaves in the mix too, a bit like oversteeped tea. Still, pretty good overall. 🥃

Hmm this one's a bit more gassy spices wise than usual, almost like a cinnamon stick lit on fire 🔥 And there's this dairy cream sweetness that comes through, reminds me of strawberry yoghurt you'd have for pudding Goes down with that oversteeped tea bitterness you sometimes get if you leave the bag in too long Got a tad on the oaky side as well, that bitter oak lingers But wait - there's these lovely sour touches, quite refreshing actually Makes me think of a Chilean red wine I had once Oh and that finish is rather long, keeps going For a younger dram it's pretty good, kind of like an immaculate young citrusy Tomatin I reckon Enjoyable stuff altogether 👍
