Tomatin: In 2005, Tomatin decided to forge its own path. At year-end, they distilled a batch of whisky using Optic barley peated to 15ppm and filled them into various cask types. Eight years later, a distinctive Tomatin single malt brand emerged—Cù Bòcan. Over the following six years, the distillery released numerous expressions under this line. Despite its popularity, Tomatin felt it was time for a brand realignment. In summer 2019, three new Cù Bòcan whiskies launched: the core Signature, plus Creation #1 and Creation #2. Creation #1 is finished in a combination of Black Isle Brewery Imperial Stout casks and Bacalhôa Moscatel De Setúbal wine casks, while Creation #2 matures in Japanese shōchū casks and European virgin oak casks. The distillery features a nine-tonne full-lauter stainless steel mash tun, twelve stainless steel fermentation tanks (54-110 hour fermentation), and six stills. Its 2019 production target was 18 million liters, including two weeks dedicated to peated whisky production at 40ppm. The core range includes Legacy, 12, 18, 30, and 36 Year Old, plus Tomatin Cask Strength, Tomatin Port Cask 14 Year Old, and Tomatin First Fill Bourbon Cask UK Exclusive. The 30 Year Old joined in 2018. Limited releases feature the Five Virtues series (Wood, Fire, Earth, Water, Metal), each cask-finished for unique profiles. The Warehouse 6 Collection includes Tomatin 40 Year Old and the recent 1975 Oloroso Cask release. Tomatin 50 Year Old, one of the distillery's most historic releases, debuted in 2018. Travel retail exclusives include 8, 12, 15, and 40 Year Old expressions. The peated portfolio is represented by Cù Bòcan Signature, Cù Bòcan Creation #1, and Cù Bòcan Creation #2.

Just poured a dram and wow, blood oranges and lime hit first, then a mentholy breeze like a menthol cigarette, with hints of wormwood and eucalyptus. A touch of rooibos tea and chamomile sweetness, plus a funky ex‑Jamaican cask oak‑aged mojito vibe. Fresh bitter almonds and green bananas sneak in, finishing with a delicate gold‑coloured warmth. Fun and great 😄

Blimey, this one's a bit of a surprise! The oaked lemon juice hits first, proper zesty, then this mentholy kick that's like an oak-aged mojito in spirit. Not too shabby for something so rather unusual. There's an ex-Jamaican cask influence giving it a tropical twist, and the incense-and-sandalwood notes make me think of old temples. Dozens and dozens of tiny aromas keep popping up – blood oranges, lime, even a hint of roasted sesame oil. The fresh bitter almonds and wormwood edge make it rather deviant in a fun way. It's extremely elegant but also quite delicate, if that makes sense. The finish is rather long, lingering on rooibos tea and chamomile for a soothing end. Cor blimey, it's a fantastic whisky – very unusual indeed, and honestly, quite hard to score. But damn, it's fun and great! 🥃 Clink!

Started with this one and wow, it's extremely elegant. On the nose, I got roasted sesame oil and green bananas – that's rather unusual! Then sandalwood and incense come through. Taste-wise, blood oranges mix with olives, almost like an oak-aged mojito. Very mentholy, reminds me of a menthol cigarette but in a good way. Pure gold colour. The finish is rather long, with eucalyptus hints. Untipped feel gives it a deviant edge. Perfect composition, really – very unusual indeed! 🥃

Just poured myself a dram of this one – wow, what a nose! 🤯 So many little things going on, like rooibos tea and fresh limes. Smells like oaked lemon juice with a minty, eucalyptus vibe. Quite delicate, actually. Taste-wise, it’s a proper tropical fruit basket – green bananas, ripe pink bananas, blood oranges... All that with a herbal edge, chamomile maybe? There’s definitely an oak-aged mojito thing happening. Very unusual indeed. The finish brings sandalwood and teak oil, with a lingering menthol cigarette note (in a good way!). It’s an extremely elegant whisky, a perfect composition that’s fun and great. Hard to score because it’s rather deviant, this one. 👌
