First impression... wow, this is thick. Like, really thick, with a residual oiliness of texture that coats the glass. Deep gold in the glass, with a heavy, imposing brimming of oils. It’s got a style of its own for sure.
The nose is complex, a mix of candied fruit peel notes, lemon infused olive oil, and a backdrop of wet forest, wet moss, and undergrowth. There's a faint embrocations and animal furs note, like opening an old waxed canvass bag in a damp barn.
On the palate, it's hyper-oily, plainly fatty with the fatness of an oil slick. There's this natural malty richness, but then you get all these technical minerals – flinty, chalk, and a clear mineral profile. Notes of putty, linseed oil, and mechanical oils come through. A subtle honeyed sweetness tries to peek out, but it's balanced by dried herbs, white pepper, and a beautiful freshness that stops it from being too heavy.
It’s brusque at first, very petrolly and petrolic, with sea greens and eucalyptus. You definitely need to spend two years and a whole bottle getting to know it. It’s deep and challenging complexity, leaning close to base materials, but that pure pleasure factor is there, hiding in the layers of lanolin and waxes.
It’s slightly easier to unpack than some, but still firmly in the upper echelons of brilliance. The finish is long, with ink, mineral oil, bacon fat, and a final hit of myrtle. A wider, more generous experience than you'd expect. Utterly superb whisky for nerds. 🤔🥃
