In 2017, Loch Lomond's owner signed a promotion agreement for its products in the expanding Chinese market; in June 2019, Loch Lomond's ties with China deepened further. Exponent Equity, the private equity fund that has been managing Loch Lomond Group (Loch Lomond Distillery's parent company) since 2014, announced it had sold the company to China's Hillhouse Capital for approximately $500 million to $550 million. Loch Lomond Distillery's equipment is extraordinary. When built in 1966, it was installed with a pair of straight neck stills. In 1990, another pair of stills was added. Four years later, a grain distillery was launched. In 1998, a pair of traditional pot stills was installed; in 2007, a single grain Coffey still was added, later supplemented by a third pair of straight neck stills. Now, the distillery boasts 13 stills of four completely different types! Of the 5 million liters of malt whisky produced annually at Loch Lomond Distillery, 3.5 million liters are distilled in Coffey stills for the popular Loch Lomond Single Grain Whisky (actually single malt, but not recognized as such by the SWA because no pot stills are used). Whiskies under the Loch Lomond brand have their spirit distilled in traditional stills and are blended with whisky distilled in straight neck stills before bottling. The Inchmurrin brand whisky comes from straight neck stills. Also from straight neck stills are the heavily peated Inchmoan brand whisky, and other brands not heavily promoted in official packaging (Inchfad, Glen Douglas, Craiglodge, and Croftengea). Other equipment includes a 9.5-ton full lauter mash tun, 10 stainless steel fermentation tanks (fermentation time 92-160 hours) dedicated to malt whisky processing. Additionally, there are 18 pieces of equipment dedicated to grain whisky processing. Regular releases include three brands: Loch Lomond, comprising Classic, Original, 10-year, 12-year, and 18-year expressions; Inchmurrin, with 12-year, 18-year whiskies and a Madeira wine cask finish; and Inchmoan 12-year and 1992 vintage. Duty-free products include Loch Lomond Single Grain, Signature blended Scotch, 12-year single malt, plus Inchmurrin Madeira cask finish, 10-year single cask, and 10-year Inchmoan. Limited editions include Loch Lomond The Open Special Edition (British Open Golf Championship) and a 50-year-old expression.

Right, first nose is like walking into an old fermentary – that damp, stoneware jar quality. Then it hits you: apricot jam, a proper eau-de-vie, and freshly baked bread rolls. Quite a combination. First sip, wow. It’s like cherry juice mixed with… oddly, a hint of baby puke? Don’t mean that in a bad way! Then come the cheeses, smoked and salted. I’m getting a big Mother Nature vibe – very kirschy, with almonds at the end. The finish is so long, like a pear Williams eau-de-vie made from barley. A proper dram. 👍

Blimey, this is a curious dram. Colour’s as white as the whitest white tequilas – makes you do a double-take. First whiff hits you with this big, juicy williams pear and stone fruits, almost like a fine eau-de-vie. But then… there’s this sweaty, salty note underneath. Quite like gym socks, honestly. 😅 On the palate, it’s all smoked and salted williams pear spirit, with a sharp, green apricot bite. Reminds me a bit of kirschwasser. Then comes this weird, sour note… hard to place at first, but aye, there it is – like a hint of baby puke. Not as bad as it sounds, it’s just… there. There’s a touch of paraffin and linoleum too, if you can believe it, but it works somehow. The finish is long, really long, leaving you with this lingering taste of salted almonds, fresh breads, and a ghost of cheeses. Honestly, it’s like nothing I’ve tried. A proper adventure in a glass.

Poured a dram, looked crystal clear - as white as tequilas! 🤯 First thing hit me was this fierce, salty smoke, like someone burned a williams pear with seaweed. Then... wow, it got weirdly fruity. Apricot juice, cherries, even a bit of almond. But underneath there’s this funky, fermentary note, like new make spirit or even a hint of gym socks. 😳 The finish is long, but part of it’s this sharp, stony fruit taste mixed with something plasticky, linoleum-ish. Felt very kirschy, like cheap cherry liqueur, but also somehow a bit cheesy? And a whiff of paraffin. Honestly, it’s all over the place - one second it’s like eau-de-vie, the next it’s smoked and salted. Mother Nature had a wild day making this one. 🤔

The first sniff hits you with this weird mix of stone fruits and… is that paraffin? Like smelling an unlit candle next to a bowl of apricots. 😄 Then you get this very kirschy note, really reminds me of eau-de-vie or kirschwasser. It’s got that clear, almost “as white as the whitest white tequilas” vibe, but from barley. A bit of fermentary note, not in a bad way, just lively. On the palate, it’s like chewy fresh breads mixed with almonds and a drop of cherry juice. There’s a fleeting, funky hint some might call “baby puke” or “gym socks” – just a tiny bit of that cheese-like funk. It’s actually interesting! The finish is long, with that Eau-de-vie de barley character sticking around. You can really feel Mother Nature’s hand in it. It’s a wild ride, not your everyday sipper, but I kinda like it.

Proper punchy at 100 proof 😅 Feels very new-makey: pear eau-de-vie, apricot, cherry juice and a bit of kirsch. Then it goes odd — salty smoke, almonds, a cheesy whiff, even a sweaty gym-sock thing. Sharp, pale, spirity… almost like super-white tequila. Not boring, just a bit wild.
