Luokanduo Distillery, established by John Thompson in 1898, stands as a testament to Speyside's resilient whisky-making tradition. Located on the picturesque banks of the River Spey near Dufftown, the distillery faced early adversity when it was forced to close just two years later following the infamous Pattison's bankruptcy crisis. In 1903, the esteemed London wine and spirits merchant W&A Gilbey rescued the facility for £3,500 (equivalent to approximately £370,000 today), marking their third strategic Speyside acquisition after Glen Spey Distillery (£11,000 in 1887) and Strathmill Distillery (£9,500 in 1895). All three distilleries operated on a similar modest scale, each equipped with just one pair of stills at the time of acquisition, underscoring Thompson's urgency to sell. Luokanduo became an integral component in Gilbey's blending operations, serving as a crucial malt foundation for both their Spey Royal and Justerini & Brooks' J&B blends. Following the 1962 merger of Gilbey's and Justerini & Brooks, the distillery emerged as a key malt contributor to the J&B portfolio. During the 1970s, Luokanduo distinguished itself as one of the first distilleries to commercially produce single malt whisky, achieving remarkable success that propelled it into the top ten global single malt rankings by the early 1990s. While its position has since moderated to around 30th place, it remains Diageo's eighth best-selling single malt brand, with annual sales approaching 600,000 bottles, enjoying particular acclaim in France, Spain, and Greece. The distillery's production infrastructure reflects its craft-scale philosophy, featuring a compact 4.4-ton semi-lauter mash tun, eight traditional Douglas fir washbacks, and two meticulously operated stills. Operating five days weekly, the facility conducts sixteen mashes per cycle, balancing eight long fermentations (100 hours) with eight short fermentations (100 hours) to achieve complexity. Following a two-year refurbishment closure, Luokanduo has refined its distillation process. The distillery's famously viscous fermentation produces a spirit rich in robust fruit character, while the strategic use of wash stills with enlarged lyne arms enhances reflux, introducing delicate floral notes that balance the powerful fruit-forward profile. The core expression range includes the Luokanduo 12 Year Old, 15 Year Old Richly Matured, 18 Year Old SlowMatured, and 21 Year Old Master Reserve. In 2011, Diageo elevated the brand's prestige with a limited 25-year-old release, matured exclusively in first-fill European oak casks, under their esteemed Private Collection series.

Blimey, this one's a treat 🍹! Really pleasant on the nose, like walkin' into a sweet shop. I get orange blossom water, Turkish delights, and some apricot jam - it's like a right old mix of lovely flavours. There's somethin' exotic goin' on too, like mango jelly or somethin', and it's all tied together with a bit of richer sherry. The colour's a nice pale amber, and it's got a medium sort of feel to it. Now, I know some folks might find it a bit more dryin' because of the cocoa powder, but I think it's just fine, like a nice cuppa on a chilly day. And the aftertaste, oh boy! Honey-coated roasted pecans, just like me mum used to make. It's really a hit, if you ask me. I mean, who wouldn't love a dram that's like a big ol' plate of Jaffa cakes and nougats? Lovely notes of homemade marmalade, too. It's all just very fine, if a bit sweet, like a nice glass of gewurz VT. Anyway, it's a crackin' good whisky, and I

This one's a real hit in any household – honestly, really better than I remembered from earlier vintages or even that 18-year-old batch I had years back. The nose is really pleasant, lots of honey and those jams still lingering, like apricot jam and marmalade you'd spread on scones at Sunday lunch. There's something exotic too, maybe mango jelly or orange blossom water, dancing around with Turkish delights and Jaffa cakes vibes. On the palate, it's medium-bodied, sweet but not cloying, with cocoa powder and nougats weaving through. The aftertaste? Honey-coated roasted pecans and Smyrna raisins, very fine texture. A splash of moscatel maybe, and old wine barrels whispering in the background. Richer sherry notes too, though the cocoa gives it a drying edge. Makes me wonder if there's an actual vintage effect here – or just clever blending. Either way, it's a keeper.

This dram’s got a lovely nose—pleasant aromas of cocoa powder and orange blossom water, maybe a hint of something exotic like mango jelly. On the palate, it’s rich with Turkish delights and Smyrna raisins, plus those drops of moscatel and various honeys that linger just right. There’s a richer sherry note in there, and the finish is medium-long, malty and sweet like nougat or apricot jam. It’s really better than I remembered, but I’m wondering—is there an actual vintage effect here? Either way, it’s very fine and high quaffability. Perfect for sharing, a hit in any household, especially if you’ve got a sweet tooth.

This dram’s got a lovely pale amber glow, and the nose is proper inviting – orange blossom water and homemade marmalade dancing together, like some sweet wine cocktail. It’s medium-bodied, but that cocoa powder gives it a bit of a drying edge, which I don’t mind. There’s honey here, more honey, and hints of nougat, Turkish delights, even Jaffa cakes. Smyrna raisins and apricot jam linger sweetly, almost like something exotic with mango jelly. The old wine barrels show through, richer sherry vibes blending in. Finishes with honey-coated roasted pecans, and those lingering jams – really pleasant, not overpowering. Reminds me of pastries and a proper sweet sherry my gran used to keep. Very fine, actually. Really better than I remembered it from earlier vintages – it’s a hit in any household.

Pouring this one, it’s a lovely pale amber, and the nose is really pleasant – I get various honeys, some apricot jam, and even something like drops of moscatel. There are these jams that are still here, almost like a homemade marmalade with some Smyrna raisins. Taking a sip, it’s medium in body but quite rich. I taste nougats and pastries, a bit of orange blossom water, and a touch of Turkish delights. There’s something exotic with some mango jelly, and hints of richer sherry, maybe from the old wine barrels. It’s very fine, and really better than I remembered it from earlier vintages. The finish has cocoa powder, which makes it more drying, but then honey-coated roasted pecans come through. More honey lingers, maybe even some sweet wine notes. Really a hit in any household, I’d say. 😊
