Luokanduo Distillery, established by John Thompson in 1898, stands as a testament to Speyside's resilient whisky-making tradition. Located on the picturesque banks of the River Spey near Dufftown, the distillery faced early adversity when it was forced to close just two years later following the infamous Pattison's bankruptcy crisis. In 1903, the esteemed London wine and spirits merchant W&A Gilbey rescued the facility for £3,500 (equivalent to approximately £370,000 today), marking their third strategic Speyside acquisition after Glen Spey Distillery (£11,000 in 1887) and Strathmill Distillery (£9,500 in 1895). All three distilleries operated on a similar modest scale, each equipped with just one pair of stills at the time of acquisition, underscoring Thompson's urgency to sell. Luokanduo became an integral component in Gilbey's blending operations, serving as a crucial malt foundation for both their Spey Royal and Justerini & Brooks' J&B blends. Following the 1962 merger of Gilbey's and Justerini & Brooks, the distillery emerged as a key malt contributor to the J&B portfolio. During the 1970s, Luokanduo distinguished itself as one of the first distilleries to commercially produce single malt whisky, achieving remarkable success that propelled it into the top ten global single malt rankings by the early 1990s. While its position has since moderated to around 30th place, it remains Diageo's eighth best-selling single malt brand, with annual sales approaching 600,000 bottles, enjoying particular acclaim in France, Spain, and Greece. The distillery's production infrastructure reflects its craft-scale philosophy, featuring a compact 4.4-ton semi-lauter mash tun, eight traditional Douglas fir washbacks, and two meticulously operated stills. Operating five days weekly, the facility conducts sixteen mashes per cycle, balancing eight long fermentations (100 hours) with eight short fermentations (100 hours) to achieve complexity. Following a two-year refurbishment closure, Luokanduo has refined its distillation process. The distillery's famously viscous fermentation produces a spirit rich in robust fruit character, while the strategic use of wash stills with enlarged lyne arms enhances reflux, introducing delicate floral notes that balance the powerful fruit-forward profile. The core expression range includes the Luokanduo 12 Year Old, 15 Year Old Richly Matured, 18 Year Old SlowMatured, and 21 Year Old Master Reserve. In 2011, Diageo elevated the brand's prestige with a limited 25-year-old release, matured exclusively in first-fill European oak casks, under their esteemed Private Collection series.

Blimey, this one's pretty fine, if I do say so myself 😊. Got a mocha-spoon of dark honey in it, which is lovely. Reminds me of toasts and breads, all warm and comforting. There's a bit of oak spices and walnut skins in there too, which adds a nice depth. It's not too sherried, which is a plus for me. When I take a sip, I get whiffs of button mushrooms and green walnuts, which is a bit unusual but quite nice. The finish is a tad short, but it's all right, I suppose. It's a bit like drinking a nice cuppa, but with a bit more oomph, like a richly matured tea-ish flavour. Not bad at all, if you ask me 🍺. Had it with a pint of pils, and it was a nice combo. The cardboard notes are a bit of a letdown, but overall, it's a decent dram 🥃.

This one’s a bit grassy upfront, if I’m honest, like a strong black tea that's seen better days. The nose has these whiffs of button mushrooms and something nutty—walnut skins maybe? It’s light gold in colour, not too sherried, and there’s a faint mocha-spoon of dark honey lurking in the background. On the palate, it’s rather light but with a wee dustiness, a tad rounder than expected, and the oak spices come through nicely. The bitterness reminds me of bitterer black teas, with a touch of Seville oranges and toffee. There's a weird cardboard edge in the aftertaste, but honestly, it's not bad. The finish is a little short, more like a pils than a proper dram, but for what it is, it's pretty fine. Nothing earthshattering, but a rather good drop if you're after something straightforward. 🥃

Poured myself a dram. It's a light gold colour, looks rather delicate. First thing I notice is it's tea-ish, like a bitterer black tea, maybe with a mocha-spoon of dark honey stirred in. A little grassier than some, and there's a hint of Seville oranges, but drier. Feels a bit less sherried to me. Getting some nuttier notes now, like toasted breads and a bit of walnut skins. That green walnuts tang is there too. There's a wee dustiness, almost like cardboard, but it fades. It reminds me a bit of Nescafé, oddly. It's rather light on the palate, not a heavy hitter. Tad rounder with toffee notes, but the finish is a little short. Pils-like crispness there. Overall, it's pretty fine. Remains very okay for a slow matured, richly matured one. A decent sip for a quiet afternoon. 😊

Pale gold in the glass, honestly. On the nose, first thing I get is this malty, kinda bready note – like walking into a bakery early morning. Then it shifts, more grassy and herbal, with something nutty underneath, maybe like fresh walnut skins. Takes a little water okay. On the palate, it’s rather light and rounder than expected. There’s a distinct nuttier character, almost like green walnuts, and a touch of that black tea bitterness. It’s got this less sherried vibe overall, more in the oaky spice and a faint mocha-like sweetness. The finish is where it gets a bit… interesting. It lingers with a whiff of something earthy, button mushrooms maybe, and unfortunately a distinct cardboard note pops up in the aftertaste. Not the best end, tbh. 🤔 A decent dram, but that cardboard finish lets it down a tad.

Poured a dram and it’s got this light gold look. On the nose, I’m getting a bit of Seville oranges, something malty, and yeah, a touch of green walnuts. Doesn’t seem very sherried at all. To taste, it’s… quite okay. There’s a hint of dark honey, almost like mocha, but then it goes a bit grassier, nuttier—walnut skins, you know? Maybe a light breadiness, tea-ish. Feels rather light in the mouth. Finish is a little short, and there’s a bit of a bitter edge, with a slight cardboard note and a wee dustiness. Not earthshattering, but honestly, it’s a pretty fine drop. Quite sessionable, almost pilsner-like. 👍
