Glenfarclas Distillery, nestled on the Recherlich Farm in Ballindalloch, Speyside, stands as one of Scotland's last remaining family-owned and operated whisky producers. Since John Grant acquired the distillery in 1865 for £511.19s, six generations have steadfastly refused all acquisition offers, preserving 150 years of independent craftsmanship. The distillery's legendary devotion to sherry cask maturation is underpinned by an exclusive 25-year partnership with José y Miguel Martin, one of Jerez's premier bodegas, ensuring access to high-quality Oloroso sherry butts when global supply has become scarce and prohibitively expensive. While renowned for producing classic 'sherry bomb' expressions, Glenfarclas equally prioritizes integrating its robust distillery character—marked by heavy, oily spirit cut and direct-fired distillation—into every bottling. The distillery's traditional equipment includes a 16.5-ton semi-lauter mash tun, 12 stainless steel washbacks with an extended fermentation period averaging 102 hours (minimum 60 hours), three direct-fired copper pot stills equipped with copper chain rummagers to prevent caramelized sediment accumulation, and a deliberately slow distillation regime. Production capacity reaches approximately 2.3 million liters of new make spirit annually from 9 tons of malt processed weekly. Maturation occurs across 38 traditional dunnage warehouses on-site, housing 105,000 casks. The core portfolio comprises age-statement expressions at 8, 10, 12, 15, 21, and 25 years, the non-age-statement Glenfarclas Heritage showcasing lighter sherry influence, and the pioneering 105 Cask Strength (60% ABV), the industry's first commercially available single malt cask strength bottling. Limited editions include market-specific 17, 30, and 40-year-old releases for the US, Japan, and Sweden; a 2014 duty-free exclusive 18-year-old; and a 2003 single cask bottling for the 2019 Speyside Whisky Festival. The prestigious Family Casks series spans vintages from 1954-2004, while the landmark Generations Range has featured whiskies distilled as far back as 1950. The pinnacle of collectibility arrived in late 2018 with the Glenfarclas Family Trunk—a steamer trunk housing fifty 200ml bottles representing every vintage from 1954-2004, limited to 60 sets at £100,000 each. The 2019 Glenfarclas Trilogy further demonstrated Oloroso cask mastery with 14, 20, and 27-year-old expressions.

Had a dram today that felt like a big, rich soup – loads of meat bouillon, a touch of parsley, and sweet dates and figs dancing around. There's a coffee kick I love, plus hints of agave and a whisper of pastis. The finish is huge, nearly perfect, with a jammy side fighting back against a slightly obvious oak. Smooth at 57% vol, dark amber in the glass, and that perfect aftertaste lingers. 🥃☕

This dram’s got a proper dark amber glow, like something you’d find in an old wooden cabinet. The nose is all about this huge, polished version of the 2002 – maybe that’s the oak talking – but there’s also hints of agave and a rather meaty depth that makes me think of a proper beef bouillon, even a touch of Havana cigar smoke. I love all this coffee in it, mingles with figs and sultanas, like a fruit cake soaked in something stronger. There’s a saltiness too, and a hint of liquorice that’s quite unexpected. It’s kind of smooth at 57% vol, but water makes it a little dry, which is a shame. The palate is huge – jammy side fighting back against that oak that became a notch too obvious. Bitter chocolate and dates come through, along with a lovely-lovely nose of pencil shavings and soups? Odd, but weirdly appealing. The aftertaste lingers, very long, with touches of prunes and PX sherry notes. Qualitys extremely high so far, and despite the oak getting a bit loud, it’s still excellent. Maybe a splash more water next time – this one’s got legs, but it’s not messing about. ☕🥃

This dram hits you right away with a massive, rich body—like a polished take on something from 2002, but with way more depth. The nose is all over the shop in the best way: pencil shavings, bitter chocolate, and this strange but lovely hint of pastis that I can’t quite pin down. There’s a proper meaty character here, almost like a bouillon soup, with prunes, dates, and figs dancing around. The orange liqueur is heavy, but it’s balanced by some agave sweetness and a touch of coffee bitterness. Smooth for 57%? Bloody hell, yeah! The finish’s long and satisfying, with that perfect aftertaste lingering. Taiwan’s influence seems well picked, adding a subtle layer of complexity. Nearly spot on, really. 🥃

Oof, this is a beast at 57%—smooth as it gets but still packs a punch. First sniff hits like a Havana cigar left too long in the humidor, all dark amber and heavy orange liqueur vibes. Then it’s like someone chucked a handful of sultanas and figs into a pot of beef bouillon soup, with a funny twist of parsley and pencil shavings sneaking in. Water’s a bit mean, dries the mouth out quick. But oh man, the coffee notes hit like a train—love all that bitter chocolate depth. Raisins soaked in PX, a touch of agave sweetness fighting back, and just when you think it’s over, the aftertaste lingers like a very long, meaty hug. Nearly perfect, really. Just a hint of oak overstepping its welcome, but who cares when the rest is this lush? Quality’s top-notch.

Wow, dark amber colour really catches the eye. The nose is lovely-lovely with pencil shavings and touches of beef bouillon – kind of meaty and a funny one. At 57% vol, it's surprisingly smooth. Sipping, I get huge coffee notes and on raisins and PX, with figs, dates, and sultanas giving a jammy side fighting back. There's a saltiness and heavy orange liqueur. Water makes it a bit dry, but more zests come out. Quality's extremely high so far, nearly perfect despite the oak becoming a notch too obvious. Reminds me of many old rums, polished and excellent. I love all this! 😊
