Glen Moray has undergone a remarkable transformation over the past decade. While serving as a crucial base for the Label 5 blended Scotch whisky, Glen Moray's single malt has carved out its own respected position in the market, earning praise from whisky connoisseurs and achieving impressive sales figures. The distillery's success is partly attributed to La Martiniquaise's management, but distillery manager and master blender Graham Coull deserves special recognition. Coull entered the whisky industry in 1994 and became Glen Moray's distillery manager in 2005. However, he embraced a new challenge in October 2019, departing for Ireland's Dingle Distillery to take on the role of distillery manager and master distiller. Since 2016, Glen Moray has operated with an 11-ton full lauter mash tun, 14 stainless steel fermenters with a 50-60 hour fermentation period, and nine stills (three wash and six spirit stills). Current annual production stands at 5.7 million liters of new make spirit. The company plans to recommission its old mash tun, add additional fermenters, and install two new wash stills, increasing capacity to 8.9 million liters annually. In 2019, the distillery ran 28 mashes per week, producing 5.7 million liters, including 100,000 liters of peated spirit at 50ppm. That same year, Glen Moray removed two smaller warehouses to accommodate two large warehouses and a palletized storage facility. The core range includes Classic, Classic Port Finish, Classic Chardonnay Finish, Classic Sherry Finish, Classic Cabernet Sauvignon Finish, Classic Peated, and 12, 15, and 18-year-old expressions. In 2018, Glen Moray launched a 10-year-old Fired Oak, matured for a decade in bourbon casks before spending ten months in heavily charred American virgin oak. Recent limited releases include a 21-year-old Port Finish, a 30-year-old Sherry Finish, and an expression finished for two years in apple brandy casks. In autumn 2019, Glen Moray introduced a whisky finished for two years in Martinique Rhum Agricole casks. Additionally, the distillery has released three 15-year-old whiskies matured respectively in white Burgundy, Chardonnay, and Madeira wine casks.

Just had a dram and it’s cracking stuff. Really elegant with that old‑fashioned restraint – delicate and discreet oak, not a show‑off. The nose is all chamomile, fresh pollen and a hit of fresh vanilla. Takes me to mirabelle jam, apple brandy, overripe apples and a chewy nougat sweetness. A dusting of ground cinnamon too. Goes down rather easily, maybe too easily 😄. Medium length, very well‑behaved, almost retro refinement. Lovely.

Got a bright hit of overripe apples and very ripe mirabelles first, almost like grabbing a windfall orchard snack straight off the branch 🍎 Then that rich large plum tarte note kicks in, warm with a dusting of ground cinnamon, exactly like the slice my mate’s mum bakes for Sunday lunch 🥧 There’s a soft, mellow herbal tea edge, chamomile specifically, plus just a touch of oak, very well-behaved, no harshness at all. Swirl it a bit and you get stewed rhubarb, clafoutis vibes, plus a little honeyed apple brandy sweetness, it goes down rather easily, honestly. Medium length finish, leaves a hint of straw and fresh vanilla, really quite something special, superb little small batch drop that 🥃

Had a glass of this the other evening and, blimey, it’s rather lovely. The nose hits you with a zesty orange juice note, all bright and fresh, then there’s this whisper of vanilla that’s proper comforting. On the tongue, it’s like biting into a plum tarte straight out the oven—sweet, jammy mirabelles dancing about, with a cheeky hint of stewed rhubarb tang. There’s a dusting of ground cinnamon and something floral, maybe fresh pollen, giving it a bit of intrigue. It’s got that old-fashioned restraint about it, not too loud, just elegant 🍊. The oak’s there, but only a touch, like it’s been sitting in the cask long enough to pick up a bit of wisdom. Smooth as you like, it goes down rather easily, no harsh edges. Hints of apple brandy and clafoutis linger at the back, with a nougat-like sweetness that’s almost retro refinement. Quite something special, that’s what it is.

This one’s got a lovely, gentle warmth to it. Right off the nose, there’s a hint of chamomile and herbal teas, like a quiet moment in the garden. The palate opens with sweet notes of nougat and fresh vanilla, almost like a dessert you’d get at your gran’s. Then it shifts to this rich plum tarte and mirabelle jam, sweet but not cloying, with a touch of stewed rhubarb keeping things interesting. There’s cinnamon in there too, warm and just a bit spicy, like apple brandy with a splash of orange juice. It’s elegant, not overpowering—very well-behaved, if you ask me. The finish is smooth, medium length, with a delicate oak that doesn’t shout. Reminds me of clafoutis, honestly, with those ripe mirabelles lingering. Proper nice dram, quite something special 😌🥃

This dram’s got a real charm, you know? Starts off with this lovely honeyed sweetness, like a spoonful of golden nectar, then the apple brandy kicks in with these very ripe mirabelles – reminds me of summer orchards and my gran’s mirabelle jam. There’s a hint of orange juice too, not too sharp, and that plum tarte note lingers like a warm hug. The vanilla’s fresh and sweet, with a whisper of cinnamon and nougat, almost like a clafoutis with stewed rhubarb. It’s medium-bodied, not too heavy, and the oak’s so delicate and discreet, you’d think it’s wearing its age with elegance. Old-fashioned restraint, proper refinement, and that chamomile finish? Just lovely. Goes down rather easily, like a small batch secret worth keeping. 🍏✨
