Glen Garioch (pronounced 'Glen Geery') stands as one of Scotland's most venerable whisky institutions, nestled in the historic market town of Oldmeldrum, Aberdeenshire. Officially founded in 1797—though the Aberdeen Journal documented production as early as December 1785—this distinguished Highland distillery embodies over 235 years of uninterrupted Scottish whisky heritage. The distillery's character underwent a profound transformation in 1994 when traditional floor malting ceased, marking the end of its lightly peated era (8-10 ppm phenol content). Contemporary Glen Garioch expressions showcase a classic unpeated Highland style, though vintage bottlings from the pre-1994 era remain highly coveted by collectors for their subtle, elegant smoke. Technical specifications reflect an uncompromising commitment to craftsmanship: a single 4-ton full lauter mash tun feeds eight stainless steel washbacks with an extended 72-hour fermentation, fostering complex ester development. The copper pot still system comprises a wash still and spirit still (the latter replaced in 2016), with a third still held in reserve. This meticulous process yields approximately 45,000 liters of new make spirit annually from seven mashes per week, matured in four traditional dunnage warehouses with earthen floors and thick stone walls. The core portfolio is distinguished by its bold 48% ABV bottling strength, delivering exceptional mouthfeel and intensity. The Founder's Reserve (no age statement) and the 12-Year-Old form the foundation, while limited editions demonstrate remarkable wood management. The 15-Year-Old, matured exclusively in first-fill Oloroso sherry casks, is strategically positioned for the travel retail channel. Since 2013, the Virgin Oak series has explored the impact of pristine American white oak maturation. Prestigious vintage releases from 1978, 1990, 1994, 1997, and 1998 offer temporal snapshots of the distillery's evolution, complemented by a special 2007 bottling commemorating the Rare Fayre celebration. The Renaissance Collection, a four-chapter narrative series launched in 2014, chronicled Glen Garioch's rebirth, culminating in a sophisticated 18-Year-Old finale in 2018. Each December, the signature Rare Fayre festival transforms the distillery into a convivial gathering where enthusiasts tour the historic facilities, participate in advanced masterclasses, sample exclusive cask-strength expressions, and procure artisanal crafts—evoking the traditional 'Fair' gatherings that have long defined Scottish community and commerce.

Just cracked open a fresh sample from a good bottle, wow what a nose, wow so intense 🥃 Straight up bananas, warm almond croissants, a waft of smoke, even a wee soapiness came to the front at first? Super odd but lovely. Sipping it, very dry, short and dry, smooth vanilla, dark chocolate, a touch of tobacco, even subtle bits of celery and turmeric poking through? That Wonderful freshness hits too, little hints of mango and gentian. It’s a rather odd bottle, almost cardoardy here and there, a little bizarre overall but all well in place for me, totally perfect for a quiet evening tipple.

Blimey, tried this rather odd bottle the other day, mate. First the nose – wow, what a nose! All that sweet smoke, ripe bananas, wee soapiness came to the front, a little bizarre at first but wow, so intense 😮 Sip it and you get that wonderful freshness straight away, bits of chocolate, vanilla, even a whif of tobacco and turmeric peeking through. It’s very dry, short and dry even, almost narrow and ‘simple’ through the middle, with a little gentian tang too. Almost cardboardy here and there if you’re not paying attention, but all well in place by the end, leaves a soft tea note on the finish. Not too sure if I’d grab another bottle anytime soon, but it’s a proper interesting one to try, innit?

Blimey, this dram hits you right in the face the moment you nose it – wow, what a nose! All sorts of mangos and bananas dancing about, proper tropical, but then there's this smoke hanging around and a hint of tobacco that makes you think of sitting by a bonfire. The colour's full gold, like looking at a sunset, but the taste? Short and dry, very dry – almost cardboardy, if you can believe it. There's a wee soapiness creeping in, which is a bit bizarre, and some turmeric or celery that's hard to pin down. The finish is sharp and dry, not lingering long. It's intense, this one, and has that "not too sure" edge to it, but in a good way. Vanilla and chocolate sneak in late, along with hints of almond croissants – odd but nice. Not a very old bottle, but it's still totally perfect for a fresh sample. Samaroli's usual standards shine through, even if the bottle looks a bit odd. A little bizarre, but I can't argue with the quality. 🥃

Wow, what a nose! Tea and smoke first, then chocolate and a wee bit of gentian. Mangos and bananas pop up, but there’s this almost cardboardy bit here and there. Vanilla and tobacco linger, but it’s short and dry. Wee soapiness came to the front—rather odd, but all well in place. 🥃

Blimey, this one’s rather interesting. Poured a fresh sample from a good bottle – full gold colour in the glass. The nose is wow, what a nose! A wonderful freshness hits first, then some ripe mangos, a touch of vanilla, and surprisingly, almond croissants. Getting a whiff of bananas and a hint of celery too. Quite complex. On the palate, it’s totally perfect in structure, but the flavours are a little bizarre. There’s that chocolate and tea note, very dry indeed. A wee soapiness came to the front for a second, which was odd. Then some turmeric spice and a fleeting almost cardoardy here and there note – not too sure what to make of that. It’s all well in place, just... rather an odd bottle. The finish is short and dry, leaving a touch of tobacco and something like gentian. So intense at first, but it fades fast. Fascinating stuff.
