Bunnahabhain Distillery, located on the northeastern coast of Islay, is currently undergoing a major £10.5 million renovation and expansion project. According to official statements, the distillery had become 'over-extended,' leading to the demolition of four warehouses and fifteen other buildings. The ambitious redevelopment plan includes constructing a new visitor center on the left side of the road adjacent to the distillery, scheduled for completion by late 2019 or early 2020. On the right side, former warehouse space will be repurposed for a new bottling hall and additional parking facilities. A significant portion of the investment is allocated to production equipment upgrades, including transitioning from manual to computer-controlled mashing operations. Post-renovation, the majority of Bunnahabhain's maturation will occur on Islay. The distillery's production facility features a 12.5-ton traditional stainless steel mash tun with a copper lid, six Oregon pine washbacks, and two pairs of stills. In early 2018, two washbacks were replaced, with the remaining two scheduled for replacement by the end of 2019. Fermentation times vary between 55 to 110 hours. For 2019, the distillery targets production of 2.1 million liters of new make spirit, with 40% being peated and 60% unpeated. Recent years have seen an increase in peated whisky production, with phenol levels rising to 35-45ppm. The core range comprises 12, 18, 25, and 40-year-old expressions. The flagship peated offerings include the no-age-statement Toiteach a Dha, a vatting of bourbon and sherry cask whiskies, and Stiùireadair, matured in first-fill and refill sherry casks. Limited releases from July 2019 feature a 2007 Port Pipe Finish, a 2007 French brandy cask, and a 1988 Marsala cask. Travel retail exclusives include Cruach-Mhòna, a heavily peated young expression; Eirigh Na Greine, a blend of bourbon, sherry, and red wine casks; and An Cladach, sherry cask matured. For the 2019 Feis Ile (Islay Festival of Music and Malt), two special editions were released: a 2008 Moine French oak cask and a 2001 Sauternes cask.

Had a dram that tasted like supermarket fruitcake drenched in dark honey, thick and still cloying, cloying with black raisins. It felt wobbly, sketchy, really not un-nice but very sweet – no baker would make them this sweet. The experience was certainly fun, rather long, moving out of the routine, yet uncertain if it's Worth trying. amounts of water you add will completely change it, bringing out coffee notes and a hint of Very loco. Probably exactly the one we shouldn't have started this session with. PX 🥃

This one’s a proper sticky number – thick, heavy, and sweet enough to make your teeth ache. First sip hits you with this heady molasses rush, like someone’s spilled a bottle of dark honey on a damp tobacco tin. There’s a wodge of coffee and black raisins lurking in there, plus this vague sherry-paxarette thing that’s either really clever or just a bit chaotic. The nose is thick, almost too much – reminds me of a fruitcake that’s been left out in the rain. Not unpleasant, mind, but definitely cloying, like trying to chew through a jar of syrup. A little rubbery undercurrent sneaks in, and I’m not sure if adding water would help or just make it weirder. It’s the kind of dram that leaves you thinking, “What on earth was that?” – but in a “possibly worth trying if you’re feeling brave” sort of way. Very loco, that’s for sure.

Bloody hell, this one’s a proper adventure. First sip? Thick, syrupy, and way too sweet – like someone bottled up a fruitcake from the supermarket and added a splash of dark honey. The nose is heavy with sherry notes, almost like PX soaked in molasses, and there’s this weird pipe tobacco vibe lurking underneath. I tried adding a drop of water, but it just made it wobbly and sketchy, like it couldn’t decide if it wanted to be coffee or raisins. The texture’s cloying, honestly, and that rubbery hint near the end? Not pleasant at all. Maybe it’s the “dunnage” effect – aged in some odd cask – but honestly, it’s impossible to get right. Started the evening with this, and now I’m just... I give up. Still, it’s not un-nice if you’re into that sort of thing. Probably exactly the one we shouldn’t have cracked open first. Worth trying once, but only if you’re an intrepid type. El Dorado in a glass, maybe. 😬

Had a dram that felt thick and wobbly on the palate, with a heady molasses sweetness that almost tipped into cloying territory – very sweet, almost like a supermarket fruitcake soaked in dark honey and coffee. It felt impossible to get right, swinging between rich and sharp, with a long, invasive finish, touches of earth and pipe tobacco lurking underneath, and a PX‑rich depth that reminded me of El Dorado rum vibes. Worth trying if you like bold, uncertain swings, but possibly for intrepid adventurers only.

This one's a bit of a handful, innit? Started with a nose full of thick must and dark honey, like someone's dumped a whole jar of molasses in there. PX sweetness hits you right away—very sweet, almost cloying, the kind that makes you wonder if a baker would even dare this level of sugar. There's sherry mixed with some kind of paxarette, maybe, gives it this wobbly, sketchy depth. Tastes like black raisins soaked in coffee and pipe tobacco, honestly. Earthy touches creep in, but it's all wrapped up in something more like a supermarket fruitcake than a proper dram. Thick on the nose, thick on the tongue—impossible to get right, if you ask me. Still, there's a strange charm here. Maybe worth a go if you're feeling adventurous, but I give up trying to figure it out. Probably best saved for El Dorado dreamers. 🥃
