Ben Nevis Distillery, established in 1825 by Long John MacDonald, stands as one of Scotland's most historically significant whisky producers. Located at the foot of Ben Nevis, the UK's highest peak, it uniquely sources water filtered through ancient peat bogs and granite for over a century, creating an unparalleled mineral profile. As one of only three Highland distilleries licensed immediately after the 1823 Excise Act, it pioneered legal whisky production in the region. The distillery holds a revered place in Japanese whisky history: Taketsuru Masataka, the father of Japanese whisky, apprenticed here in the 1920s, finding its robust character aligned with his vision. His Scottish wife Rita Taketsuru (née Macdonald) was ironically a descendant of the distillery's founding family. In 1989, Nikka Whisky acquired Ben Nevis, fulfilling Taketsuru's long-held admiration. Ben Nevis distinguishes itself through uncompromising traditional methods: no caramel coloring, no chill filtration, and uniquely in Scotland, fermentation using beer yeast. This creates a full-bodied spirit with intense stone fruit, orange marmalade, and dark chocolate notes, developing characteristic leather and tobacco complexity with age. The distillery employs traditional worm tub condensers and direct fire heating on some stills, preserving historic character. Production is split: approximately 30% of new make spirit ships directly to Japan for maturation in Nikka's warehouses, while the remainder ages on-site for Ben Nevis's scarce official bottlings. Due to severe stock shortages, age statements are deliberately understated—8-year-old releases contain 8-14 year whisky, 10-year-olds contain 12-15 year, and 15-year-olds contain 17+ year spirit. This makes authentic OB expressions exceptionally rare compared to numerous independent bottlings, positioning Ben Nevis as a cult favorite among connoisseurs seeking unadulterated, traditional Highland single malt.

Blimeing heck, this one's a proper big boy – golden amber, but don't let that fool you. First nosing, it’s like someone’s shoved a handful of walnut wine-soaked old walnuts up your hooter, but then BAM – wasabi heat and mustardy spice hit you like a Bulldog sauce challenge 😅. It’s medicinal, proper hospital corridors and metal polish vibes, but wait – there’s this umami sauce depth, think sushi bar meets damp garden peat. The sherried ones would be proud, but this? This is next level. Soot and coal, tobacco, brake pads after the Nürburgring – it’s got that dry oloroso attitude, but full of last-century walnuts and smoked cakes. Crazy long finish, lingers like a hangover that’s still worth it. Rather extreme kind of magic, innit? 🥃

Just poured myself a dram of this golden amber beauty, and honestly, it's like a proper adventure. First hit's this sharp, wasabi-like kick that makes you sit up straight, then it mellows into this mustardy warmth, almost like spreading a thick layer on a Danish pastry. The finish is so long, there's this lingering note of old walnuts and something weirdly like brake pads after a long drive on the Nürburgring—metallic, intense, but in a way that keeps you coming back. Underneath, there's a weirdly satisfying mix of smoked cakes and garden peat, like someone's been burning autumn leaves in a bakery. A splash of umami sauce? Maybe. And that faint tobacco hum... reminds me of those proper OBs batches, the ones that vanish from the shelves too quick. On the nose, it's like a hecatre of walnut wine got into a fight with a Bulldog sauce factory—crazy, but brilliant. Raw Cask magic, this one. 🥃

Bloody hell, mate… first sip hits like a sledgehammer wrapped in smoked Christmas cake 🎄🔥. That peat’s so wet and garden-fresh it’s like chewing on a bonfire log while standing in a peat bog at midnight. Then—BAM—medicinal iodine slap across the face, like licking a hospital floor after someone’s been coughing up lung butter. But ohhh, the sherry… golden amber rivers of orgasmic oloroso soaking through walnut wine barrels it’s been bathing in for ages. Tastes like the driest sherry-soaked Danish pastry left too long in a cigar humidor, all tobacco leaf and old walnut crunch. Finishes so long it’s basically a post-Nürburgring brake pad encore—metal polish and coffee grounds stuck to your molars for bloody hours. And that mustardy umami? Like Bulldog sauce drizzled over a sushi platter that’s been left in a peat smokehouse overnight. Not for the faint-hearted, this one—pure big boy juice, raw cask madness with a side of soot and coal ash. 😵‍💫

Right so had a pour of this tonight and crikey... that colour is beautiful, proper golden amber just catching the light. First whiff is all wet garden peat, very mossy and earthy, like rummaging around in damp soil after rain. Then there's this medicinal kick that reminds me of those big sherried Laphroaig bottlings. Quite intense stuff honestly, soot and coal everywhere. Taste-wise it's got this mad smoked cake thing going on, buttery Danish pastry vibes but with coal dust all over it. The sherry influence is absolutely obscene - proper oloroso bomb 😍 Almost savoury, getting umami and something like brown sauce in there. There's coffee and cigar ash too, like sitting in an old leather chair after dinner. Hints of metal polish and walnut wine casks. Very close to some of those small batch official releases I've tried before. Definitely a rather extreme kind of dram this one. Not for everyone but if you like your whisky big and sherried, it's bloody marvellous innit 🥃

Warm and cosy dram 🥃 Bit of honey, oak, soft spice and a wee smoky edge. Feels smooth, mellow, and nicely warming on a chilly night. Nice long finish, quite comforting tbh.
