Ben Nevis Distillery, established in 1825 by Long John MacDonald, stands as one of Scotland's most historically significant whisky producers. Located at the foot of Ben Nevis, the UK's highest peak, it uniquely sources water filtered through ancient peat bogs and granite for over a century, creating an unparalleled mineral profile. As one of only three Highland distilleries licensed immediately after the 1823 Excise Act, it pioneered legal whisky production in the region. The distillery holds a revered place in Japanese whisky history: Taketsuru Masataka, the father of Japanese whisky, apprenticed here in the 1920s, finding its robust character aligned with his vision. His Scottish wife Rita Taketsuru (née Macdonald) was ironically a descendant of the distillery's founding family. In 1989, Nikka Whisky acquired Ben Nevis, fulfilling Taketsuru's long-held admiration. Ben Nevis distinguishes itself through uncompromising traditional methods: no caramel coloring, no chill filtration, and uniquely in Scotland, fermentation using beer yeast. This creates a full-bodied spirit with intense stone fruit, orange marmalade, and dark chocolate notes, developing characteristic leather and tobacco complexity with age. The distillery employs traditional worm tub condensers and direct fire heating on some stills, preserving historic character. Production is split: approximately 30% of new make spirit ships directly to Japan for maturation in Nikka's warehouses, while the remainder ages on-site for Ben Nevis's scarce official bottlings. Due to severe stock shortages, age statements are deliberately understated—8-year-old releases contain 8-14 year whisky, 10-year-olds contain 12-15 year, and 15-year-olds contain 17+ year spirit. This makes authentic OB expressions exceptionally rare compared to numerous independent bottlings, positioning Ben Nevis as a cult favorite among connoisseurs seeking unadulterated, traditional Highland single malt.

Just had a pour and it felt like biting into a sun‑kissed orange, then a dash of green lawn after that. There’s a hint of raw wool and a stubborn, almost chalky mineral bite that hangs long. A few green plum whispers and a weird little grit that’s like laundry but in a good way 🌿🍊

Blimey, this is bloody lovely 🥃 Got that geranium flowers first, then bits of bitter fruits like green plums and bitter oranges, tad rough hit of raw wool, weird mentholy little kick, grassy leafy edge too? There’s even a little zing like that cheap white wine you grab for a bbq. Then that chalky mineral signature comes through, bags of limestone in the back, and that acrid sootiness that’s just classic Highland stuff. Tad young but not immature at all, fruitier than I expected, hints of pears, liquorice and smoked oranges, even a weird little whif of washing powder? Sounds mad but it works so well. Long finish, perfect now tbh, all the typical lovely notes you want in a nightcap, wonderful for a quiet evening 🤙

God, this is bloody brilliant 🥃 First sip hits with that grassy, geranium flower zing, bit of mentholy tingle too. Then you get those smoked oranges, bitter fruits, even a whiff of that raw wool / Woolite thing that’s so typical. That pure highland character runs right through the whole thing. Mineral signature is spot on – bags of chalk, limestone, that chalky dryness that lingers for ages. Long finish with liquorice, a touch of acrid sootiness, bitter oranges, green plums and even ripe pears peaking through. Tad young still, but the stuff is perfect now honestly, no immature sharpness at all. Just lovely, fruity, earthy stuff that’s exactly what you want on a quiet evening. Wonderful, couldn’t ask for better 🥂

Aye, this one’s got a proper punch on the nose – really hits you with this sharp, chalky thing, a bit like licking a slate wall mixed with some old washing powder, know what I mean? Then it’s all smoky oranges and bitter oranges on the palate, proper intense. There’s a hint of that raw wool and limestone in there too, kinda earthy and rough around the edges, but in a good way. The mentholy kick at the end is refreshing, like a minty breeze. I’d say it’s tad rough, not too polished, but that mineral signature keeps it grounded. Wonderfully long finish, actually – bags of character. Tastes like it’s been aged in some quirky casks, maybe? Proper lovely dram for a chilly evening. 🥃

Poured myself a dram tonight and got this really interesting stuff going on. First hit is these bitter oranges and green plums, almost like a dry white wine in a way. There's quite a lot of liquorice coming through too, which I wasn't expecting. The minerality is chalky, bags of limestone kind of vibe, typical of that style. A bit of raw wool and something like Woolite or washing powder - not in a bad way, just there. 🤔 It's fruitier than I'd usually go for, with pears and geranium flowers in the background. Still a tad young maybe, a tad rough around the edges, but certainly not immature. The smoked oranges give it this lovely depth. Oh, and a touch of that acrid sootiness at the back - leafy stuff too. The finish is long, really long. Wonderful dram altogether. Perfect now for a quiet evening. 🥃
