anCnoc and Balblair are two renowned single malt brands under Inver House Distillers, which launched entirely new series in 2003 and 2007 respectively, featuring new bottle packaging and label designs. anCnoc's sales subsequently increased dramatically, and the brand introduced a peated series. Balblair Distillery has experienced only modest sales growth over the past decade. The company had been promoting this series as vintage-dated rather than age-statement whiskies. This change, however, did not drive sales growth, as consumers are not accustomed to whiskies identified by vintage year. Only Glenrothes Distillery employed a similar strategy, and last year they abandoned vintage-dated sales, reverting to age-statement whiskies. Consequently, in April 2019, Balblair Distillery also launched a completely new series of age-statement expressions. Balblair's whisky style remains unchanged, and the company hopes their new products will be embraced by more consumers. In 2012, Balblair Distillery opened an exceptionally refined visitor center; although small in size, it still receives approximately 4,000 visitors annually. Balblair Distillery is equipped with one 4.4-ton stainless steel semi-lauter mash tun, six Oregon pine washbacks, and two stills. Starting last year, the distillery increased operations from five to seven days per week, significantly boosting production capacity. With 21 mashes per week, the annual target production is 1.53 million liters. In 2019, fermentation time was standardized to 66 hours. The distillery also has eight traditional dunnage warehouses with a total capacity of 22,500 casks. In 2015, the distillery began using gas instead of heavy oil as fuel, substantially reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Balblair's core age-statement range includes: Balblair 12 Year Old, 15 Year Old, 18 Year Old, and 25 Year Old. Balblair 12 Year Old is matured in twice-charred American oak bourbon barrels. Balblair 15 Year Old and 18 Year Old are matured in bourbon barrels, then finished in Spanish oak sherry casks. Balblair 25 Year Old is matured in bourbon barrels, then finished in Oloroso sherry casks.

Just poured a dram and got hit with honey sweetness, then a whisper of orange zest and apple compote, like biting into a warm custard slice. There’s a soft malt backbone, almost fudge‑y, with a hint of cinnamon rolls and a touch of argan oil nuttiness. Finishes fresh, a bit citrusy, like a breeze through an orchard after rain. 😊

This one’s got a right proper nose – starts well with a hint of citrus and those orchard apples dancing around, fresh and bright like a spring morning. There’s a malty kick, almost like sponge cake soaked in butterscotch, with a touch of honey sweetness lingering. The hazelnut and olive add this weirdly smooth, earthy depth, while the citra style brings out a zesty orange peel edge. It’s not too heavy, more medium-bodied, but the argan and sunflower oils give it this silky texture that’s dead easy on the throat. Reminds me of those cinnamon rolls at Edinburgh Airport, all warm and comforting, but with a fudge-like richness at the back. Weirdly brilliant, this style – proper memorable. 🥃

This dram just starts well – lovely honey and shortbread notes upfront, like a proper morning treat. There's a cheeky hint of sunflower and apples, half orchardy, half citrusy, which gives it a brighter lift. The malty and fruity balance is spot on, very malty but not overwhelming. Reminds me of cinnamon rolls and sponge cake, with a touch of butterscotch lingering. The finish has this superb white wine warmth, fading into hazelnut and orange zest. It's the kind of whisky that makes you think of apple compote on a crisp day – fresh, moreish, and dead easy to enjoy. Proper more of this style, innit? 🥃

Nose is all bright citrus and orchard fruits, like someone's spilled a bag of satsumas and apples into a honey pot. First sip hits with this malty punch, proper chewy and sweet, reminds me of them cinnamon rolls my gran used to bake. There's a lovely nutty thing going on too, hazelnut and sunflower seed vibes, maybe a touch of argan oil richness. Body's medium, not too heavy, and the finish lingers like custard left in the sun. For a ten-year-old, it's surprisingly fresh, almost like a white wine spritzer had a baby with a butterscotch fudge. Can't say I've had many like this, especially not one that starts so well and just gets even better. Felt like I was sat in Edinburgh Airport cafe, watching planes go by with a proper dram in hand. Pinkish label caught my eye, but the liquid inside? Proper superb stuff.

Found this 10yo at Edinburgh Airport – nice one! 🎉 First sip is quite bright, honey and oranges right there, followed by this lovely apple compote note. Medium body, feels smooth. Later on it gets more malty and fruity, reminds me of fresh sponge cake and a bit of cinnamon roll 🍰. There's a hint of olive and maybe some sunflower oil texture? Half citrusy, half orchardy like a basket of apples and oranges. Not often you come across this style, it's superb. The finish has butterscotch and fudge, like a warm custard dessert. 👍 Oh, and I bought the largest pack of shortbread ever to go with it – brilliant combo. Really nice dram, starts well and keeps giving. 😊
