The Yoichi Distillery is located in Yoichi town on the island of Hokkaido, Japan, and is owned by The Nikka Whisky Distilling Co., Ltd. Established in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru, the first Japanese person to study Scotch whisky production in Scotland, who is celebrated as the 'Father of Japanese Whisky.' Taketsuru specifically chose this location for its climate that closely resembles that of Scotland. Situated on the coast of the Sea of Japan, Yoichi whiskies possess a distinctive maritime character with robust, peaty flavors, traditionally crafted using direct coal-fired pot stills—a method rarely seen today.

Whiskyspace Notes 2273

First sniff hits me with lapsang souchong smoke and a whisper of camphor, like a cup of freshly brewed tea left to cool. Then the palate opens up oilier and fatter, with a big hit of green pepper and a grating of nutmeg that feels almost motor‑oil slick but rounded off by a luscious waxiness. There's a restrained earthiness, hints of elderflower and quince, plus a touch of salted liquorice and coal tar soap that gives it a funky edge. The finish is Good length, forward and more emphatic, leaving a sense of body and structure with a dab of lanolin and a sachet of mulling spices lingering like pear drops in the air. 🥃

First sip’s a bit like biting into a pear drop, all sweet and slightly floral. There's something green here too—unripe apples, maybe a hint of pepper. The smoke’s not shy but it’s not shouting either, more like a soft whisper by the fire. Bit of a leafy edge, some dried herbs, almost like you’ve walked through a forest after rain. It’s oily in a good way, coats the tongue like motor oil but without the garage. Feels fatter, rounder, like it’s been sitting in the cask a while, mellowing out. Bit of nutmeg, sure, and something floral too—elderflower, perhaps. Then there’s this drying note that pulls the finish together, like sipping cold tea leaves. Not one for the faint-hearted though, it’s got proper beef to it. Proper whisky muscle.

This dram hits you with a strange motor oil slickness upfront, but it’s oddly compelling. There's a coal tar soap edge that mixes with earthy notes and lapsang souchong smoke – proper bonfire vibes. The texture is luscious yet oilier, with a fatter body and structure that coats the tongue. Smoked paprika and a grating of nutmeg pop up, along with quince and pear drops sweetness. It’s forward but restrained, with green pepper sharpness and leafy freshness. Elderflower and bergamot add a floral lift, while gentian and caraway give it a medicinal kick. Soft whispers of peat smoke linger, and the finish dries out nicely with good length – like sipping a well-aged tipple infused with salted liquorice and rosehip tea. Proper Gold standard stuff 🥃

Nose opens with a lovely mix of green fruits and pear drops, almost like a sweet shop at first sniff. Then there's this softly smoky whisper, not too bold, more like a campfire on the breeze. A touch of freshly brewed tea and bergamot follows, earthy and a bit herbal. The palate's rounder, with a coating of oilier texture and some lightly smouldering peat smoke. Hints of caraway and green pepper add a savory edge, while the finish brings out a pleasantly drying, muscular depth. Lingering notes of rosehip tea and a faint mineralic tang, like something from the hills. Surprisingly lush, with a good length that leaves you thinking of salted liquorice and a hint of camphor. Proper golden, like sunlight through a glass. Cheers to that 🥃

Right, first sip... there's this lightly earthy peat smoke, kind of like a damp bonfire. A bit of camphor and those soft, whispering smoky notes too. It's quite drying on the palate but has a nice oilier texture. Getting some caraway and gentian in there, sort of herbal. Then it shifts to pear drops and a hint of green pepper. The smouldering notes come through more with green fruits. Quite like lapsang souchong tea, really. It feels bigger, more forward than I expected. Luscious, even. Found some rosehip tea and elderflower notes. Restrained but with a fatter mouthfeel. A gentle grating of nutmeg... maybe a touch of Moscatel sweetness? Has a real sense of body and structure. Bergamot and earthy notes. Smoked paprika makes a cameo. There's a pleasing waxiness, almost like coal tar soap? A whiff of aged medicine and leafy notes. All in all, quite the character. 🥃
