Tullibardine Distillery, nestled in the heart of the Scottish Highlands, has a remarkable story of resurrection and reinvention. After lying silent for a decade, the distillery was acquired in 2003 by whisky industry veterans Michael Beamish and Doug Ross, former directors of DCL and United Spirits. Their vision was ambitious: to restore the distillery to its former glory while integrating it with an adjacent commercial complex to create a unique whisky destination. Despite their expertise in distillery revival, the 2008 financial crisis and subsequent real estate market collapse forced a strategic reassessment. The economic downturn shuttered most of the commercial center's retail operations, challenging the original business model. By 2008, even with positive balance sheet indicators from 2007, the owners began exploring acquisition opportunities. The turning point came in 2013 when French spirits group Picard Vins & Spiritueux recognized the distillery's potential. Under new ownership, Tullibardine underwent a dramatic transformation. The once-chaotic production was streamlined into a sophisticated portfolio of distinctive expressions. The shuttered commercial center was ingeniously repurposed into a state-of-the-art visitor experience center, complete with bottling lines, blending rooms, expanded warehousing, and a specialized cask workshop. Today, Tullibardine serves as the spiritual home for the renowned Highland Queen blend, while establishing its own prestigious single malt identity. The compact yet efficient facility features a 6.2-ton semi-lauter stainless steel mash tun, nine fermenters with a 55-60 hour fermentation period, two 21,000-liter wash stills, and two 16,000-liter spirit stills. Production capacity reached 2.8 million liters of new spirit in 2019, with 26-27 mashes weekly. All spirit matures initially in premium bourbon casks. The core range showcases innovative cask finishes: the non-age-statement Sovereign (bourbon), 225 (Château wine casks), 228 (Burgundy casks), and 500 (Sherry casks), complemented by aged statements of 20 and 25 years. The prestigious Custodian's Collection, launched in 2015, features exceptional vintages including a landmark 1964 release in 2019. The Murray 2004, the distillery's first cask strength bottling since 2000, debuted to critical acclaim, followed by a Marsala cask edition in October 2018.

Ah, lovely dram this. The nose is properly intriguing – right away there’s this lovely honeydew melon sweetness, but it’s not simple. It’s got a real zesty kick, like lemon tarte with a crisp meringue top. On the palate, it’s pretty long. Starts with a delicate, grassy note, then these assorted grapefruit flavours come through, quite dry. There’s a whiff of thyme tea in there too, almost herbal. It’s a proper fighter, the flavours keep shifting. Mid-palate, I get this unexpected butter cream richness, then notes of amaretti biscuits. It’s a bit deviant, mind you – not your typical profile. There’s a wisp of elderflower syrup, but also some burnt and bitter herbs underneath. The finish is long and... well, quite atypical. It leaves echoes of cardboard and a bit of pine resin. There’s a touch of something mineral, like paraffin or old magazines, in the very back. Not a bad thing, just unusual. A marginally uncommon sort of whisky, but I’m enjoying it. Quite the character. 🥃

Sipped this dram and got a zesty punch of assorted grapefruits with a whisper of thyme tea 🍵, then a buttery cream swirl that reminded me of lemon tarte with meringue. There's a faint touch of stearin and a dry amontillado note, kinda like biting into bitter almonds, overall a pretty long, delicate finish that feels a bit atypical but lovely.

This dram's a bit of a weird one, in a way that's quite intriguing. There's a faint paraffin note that lingers oddly, but it's balanced by something marginally uncommon – a whiff of elderflower syrup and lemon tarte with meringue that's rather lovely. The fruitiness veers towards honeydew melon and assorted grapefruits, though it's more about the peel than the flesh. Subtle hints of burnt and bitter herbs sit alongside wee saltines manzanilla-style, which adds a dry, sherry-like twist. Butter cream and echoes of cardboard make it feel slightly atypical, but in a way that's not unpleasant. Delicate, but with a touch of pine resin and thyme tea that keeps you guessing. Probably not for everyone, but it's got character. 🥃✨

Took a sip and immediately thought of honeydew melon sitting in a bowl of bone-dry amontillado, strange but oddly lovely. There’s a grassy edge to it, like walking through a field after rain, mixed with whiffs of thyme tea and pine resin. The finish is pretty long though, with burnt and bitter herbs lingering, and a touch of bitter almonds that reminds me of old magazines left out in the sun. Zests of something citrusy pop through, maybe lemon tarte with meringue, but then it turns a bit paraffin-like, which is marginally uncommon. The mouthfeel is wee saltines manzanilla-style, crisp and clean, and there’s a butter cream sweetness that rounds it out. Feels like a very good fighter – bold but not overpowering. Notes of amaretti sneak in at the end, adding a nutty warmth. Gold in color, and honestly, the whole thing is just... well, it’s different, in a way that sticks with you.

Just had a pour of this one and honestly, it's a bit of a deviant character. First thing I get is this pine resin note, almost paraffin-like, and then a whiff of thyme tea comes through. Very herbal, kind of burnt and bitter herbs situation going on. The sherry influence is proper bone-dry amontillado style, quite delicate actually. There's something grassy in there, more citrus peel than flesh if you know what I mean. Then out of nowhere I'm thinking of lemon tarte with meringue and butter cream? 😅 Bitter almonds show up towards the end, almost like amaretti biscuit crumbs. A touch of stearin too, which sounds weird but it works. The finish is pretty long and honestly, much better than it sounds when you try to describe it all out loud. Marginally uncommon flavour profile but it's a very good fighter overall. Not your typical dram but I'd reach for it again. 🥃
