Tullibardine Distillery, nestled in the heart of the Scottish Highlands, has a remarkable story of resurrection and reinvention. After lying silent for a decade, the distillery was acquired in 2003 by whisky industry veterans Michael Beamish and Doug Ross, former directors of DCL and United Spirits. Their vision was ambitious: to restore the distillery to its former glory while integrating it with an adjacent commercial complex to create a unique whisky destination. Despite their expertise in distillery revival, the 2008 financial crisis and subsequent real estate market collapse forced a strategic reassessment. The economic downturn shuttered most of the commercial center's retail operations, challenging the original business model. By 2008, even with positive balance sheet indicators from 2007, the owners began exploring acquisition opportunities. The turning point came in 2013 when French spirits group Picard Vins & Spiritueux recognized the distillery's potential. Under new ownership, Tullibardine underwent a dramatic transformation. The once-chaotic production was streamlined into a sophisticated portfolio of distinctive expressions. The shuttered commercial center was ingeniously repurposed into a state-of-the-art visitor experience center, complete with bottling lines, blending rooms, expanded warehousing, and a specialized cask workshop. Today, Tullibardine serves as the spiritual home for the renowned Highland Queen blend, while establishing its own prestigious single malt identity. The compact yet efficient facility features a 6.2-ton semi-lauter stainless steel mash tun, nine fermenters with a 55-60 hour fermentation period, two 21,000-liter wash stills, and two 16,000-liter spirit stills. Production capacity reached 2.8 million liters of new spirit in 2019, with 26-27 mashes weekly. All spirit matures initially in premium bourbon casks. The core range showcases innovative cask finishes: the non-age-statement Sovereign (bourbon), 225 (Château wine casks), 228 (Burgundy casks), and 500 (Sherry casks), complemented by aged statements of 20 and 25 years. The prestigious Custodian's Collection, launched in 2015, features exceptional vintages including a landmark 1964 release in 2019. The Murray 2004, the distillery's first cask strength bottling since 2000, debuted to critical acclaim, followed by a Marsala cask edition in October 2018.

Ah, just had a dram and it's brilliant. 😍 First whiff is very café latte, creamy and sweet. On the tongue, there's this lovely sour note, like fresh sawdust or a sourdough starter, which then opens up into a proper apple pie sweetness, a wee tad bigger than I expected. It's got this bright, almost limoncello zing cutting through it all. Reminds me a bit of that second Murray I tried, but its own thing. The finish just stays and stays, like wine gums and warm porridge. Excellent stuff.

Absolutely brilliant dram, this one. The nose hits you with fresh sawdust and a touch of wood smoke right off the bat, like a cosy fireplace in a barn. There's a whisper of chardonnay and white wine in there too, maybe a bit of café latte creaminess that I wasn't expecting. The palate's got that same excellent punch, with limoncello zest weaving through porridge-like warmth. It's nearly identical to the second Murray I tried last month, same comments about the sherry influence, but this one's got a tad more bite. Long, smooth finish that lingers like a good chat at the pub. Crackin' stuff, really. 🥃🍷

First sip hits me with wood smoke and fresh sawdust, like a cosy fireplace in a carpenter's workshop. There's a sneaky hint of chardonnay and white wine dancing through it, makes me think of a posh picnic gone wild. The limoncello zest and hoppy kick give it a bit of a tang, not too sharp though. Some sour notes pop up, but in a way that keeps things interesting. The finish is excellent – long, warm, and just a wee tad bigger than expected. Definitely one for sipping slow by the fire 🔥🥃

This dram’s got a lovely lift to it, bit more weight than the first one – wee tad bigger, if you will. The nose hits you with this Chardonnay-like brightness, almost like a crisp white wine, then there’s the oak sneaking in, all toasty and woody. First sip? Straight away I’m thinking apple pie – proper homely, sweet-tart, with a limoncello zing that dances around the edges. There’s a touch of sourdough in there too, that yeasty, bakery feel, and a whisper of café latte creaminess. Mid-palate gets a bit sour, mind, sharp notes popping up, but it’s all balanced by this porridge-like comfort, warm and malty. The finish? Same finish really – long, with hops and fresh sawdust lingering, clean but a bit cheeky. Excellent stuff, reminds me of that cask strength Murray I had last month. Proper satisfying. 🥃

Oof, this is like a wee dram of liquid nostalgia—smoky oak right off the bat, but not in yer face, just a cosy hug. Then it’s all citrus zing, like someone squeezed a whole limoncello into the glass, but softer, more like a café latte’s sweet creaminess. The finish lingers like the last bite of apple pie with a crumbly crust, warm and just a touch of sourdough tang. There’s a hint of fresh sawdust too, like a carpenter’s workshop after a long day, but in the nicest way. And that wee tad bigger body? Feels like it’s got a bit more muscle under the hood, very close to that second dram I had last winter. Wine gums and chardonnay vibes sneaking in at the edges, but it’s all wrapped up in hops bitterness that keeps it from getting too sweet. Same finish as that cask strength I had ages ago—proper satisfying, like the last note of a good tune. 🥃
