Tomatin: In 2005, Tomatin decided to forge its own path. At year-end, they distilled a batch of whisky using Optic barley peated to 15ppm and filled them into various cask types. Eight years later, a distinctive Tomatin single malt brand emerged—Cù Bòcan. Over the following six years, the distillery released numerous expressions under this line. Despite its popularity, Tomatin felt it was time for a brand realignment. In summer 2019, three new Cù Bòcan whiskies launched: the core Signature, plus Creation #1 and Creation #2. Creation #1 is finished in a combination of Black Isle Brewery Imperial Stout casks and Bacalhôa Moscatel De Setúbal wine casks, while Creation #2 matures in Japanese shōchū casks and European virgin oak casks. The distillery features a nine-tonne full-lauter stainless steel mash tun, twelve stainless steel fermentation tanks (54-110 hour fermentation), and six stills. Its 2019 production target was 18 million liters, including two weeks dedicated to peated whisky production at 40ppm. The core range includes Legacy, 12, 18, 30, and 36 Year Old, plus Tomatin Cask Strength, Tomatin Port Cask 14 Year Old, and Tomatin First Fill Bourbon Cask UK Exclusive. The 30 Year Old joined in 2018. Limited releases feature the Five Virtues series (Wood, Fire, Earth, Water, Metal), each cask-finished for unique profiles. The Warehouse 6 Collection includes Tomatin 40 Year Old and the recent 1975 Oloroso Cask release. Tomatin 50 Year Old, one of the distillery's most historic releases, debuted in 2018. Travel retail exclusives include 8, 12, 15, and 40 Year Old expressions. The peated portfolio is represented by Cù Bòcan Signature, Cù Bòcan Creation #1, and Cù Bòcan Creation #2.

🥃 Poured a dram last night after work, proper full gold in the glass first off. Nose is absolutely lovely straight away – got that symphony of plums, oranges, kumquats, even a whiff of banana liqueur, plus gorgeous tropical passion fruit notes peeking through too. Loads of those tiny spicy jammy tones all over, marmalade, fruit compotes and jams everywhere, a little hint of Demerara sugar, vanilla fudge, even touches of chocolate and cappuccino on the sip. Long, rich yet perfectly balanced, right? The aftertaste has that expected nutmeg and cinnamon spice, plus honey and dried fruits lingering for ages. It’s proper great whisky this, honestly. Used to think these old malt spots were so unnoticed in the olden days but this? Perfect. Maybe a tad rougher than other recent 1976s by the same gang but that just adds character, doesn’t it?

Just poured a dram of this full gold beauty and wow, absolutely lovely nose! It’s got those spicy/jammy tones right away, like marmalade on toast. On the palate, it’s rich yet perfectly balanced. Loads of jams and honey, with fruit compotes and dried fruits dancing around. Little bit of cappuccino and chocolate too? Maybe. The finish is long and satisfying. A tad rougher around the edges, but in a good way. Demerara sugar sweetness with some oranges and kumquats. Just perfect. 🥃

Nose is absolutely lovely, like a basket of dried fruits and late harvest white wine all at once—tropical fruits and oranges dancing about. First sip hits rich yet perfectly balanced, with chocolate and banana liqueur weaving through, plus a marmalade sweetness. There's cinnamon and nutmeg spice, but it's not harsh, more like Demerara sugar and honey rounding things out. Jammy texture, almost symphonic plums lingering on the tongue. Finish is proper long, warm and comforting, like a cappuccino after a long day. Proper great whisky this one, makes me think of cosy evenings by the fire. 🥃

Oh wow, this one smells absolutely lovely! 🥃 Getting loads of sweet dried fruits and a bit of that rich marmalade vibe on the nose. Colour's a gorgeous full gold. Tasting it is like biting into a perfectly ripe, slightly tangy kumquat dipped in vanilla fudge. There's this wonderful spicy kick – cinnamon and nutmeg – that cuts through the jammy sweetness. It reminds me a bit of a luxurious cappuccino with that frothy, milky texture. So rich, yet it all hangs together perfectly. The finish just keeps going, with that lingering sweetness of late harvest white wine. 🍯 Really hits the spot.

Absolutely lovely nose – strikes me as having that full gold colour. You get this symphonic plums and oranges situation, plus kumquats and banana liqueur. Marmalade and fruit compotes and jams all over the place, almost jammy. Then there’s that touch of vanilla fudge, a little Demerara sugar, honey and dried fruits. Superb notes of tropical fruits as well, passion fruits! It’s got this late harvest white wine thing going on. Myriads of tinier spicy and jammy tones keep coming through. Touches of chocolate and cappuccino appear late. The finish brings the expected spices – nutmeg and cinnamon here. Long, rich yet perfectly balanced. Maybe a tad rougher than other recent 1976s by the same gang, but that’s part of its charm. It’s funny how Tomatin was so unnoticed in the olden days. This really is a great whisky. 🥃
