Teaninich Distillery stands in the industrial quarter south of Alness, a small Highland town north of Inverness that uniquely hosts two whisky producers: the picturesque Dalmore on the Cromarty Firth, and the starkly functional Teaninich. When Alfred Barnard visited in 1896, he paradoxically described Teaninich as occupying a "beautiful situation" while merely noting Dalmore's "advantageous" position—a prescient observation that foreshadowed their divergent paths. During the 1970s whisky boom, Teaninich underwent massive expansion, briefly becoming Scotland's largest distillery by capacity. Its defining innovation came in 2000 when it became the first Scotch whisky distillery to install a Meura 2001 mash filter press, revolutionizing wort extraction. Unlike traditional mash tuns, Teaninich's Asnong mills grind malt to a husk-free flour, which is then mixed with water in their 7-ton mash conversion vessels. The resulting mash is compressed through filter cloths in the Meura press, yielding exceptional extraction efficiency and alcohol recovery, albeit with marginally lower milling efficiency compared to conventional roller mills. This unique system, shared only with Inchdairnie, positions Teaninich at the forefront of brewing technology in Scotch whisky. A £5 million expansion in 2015 doubled capacity, bringing the distillery to its current configuration: 18 traditional wooden washbacks and two stainless steel fermenters (75-hour fermentation), six stills in the original stillhouse (three converted wash stills) and six new wash stills in the annex, processing 16-28 mashes weekly to produce four million liters of spirit annually. The distillery's character is marked by its 10 Year Old expression in Diageo's Flora & Fauna series, while the 2017 Special Releases showcased a 17 Year Old matured in refill American oak, highlighting Teaninich's grassy, waxy, and delicately spicy profile that has made it a favorite among blenders and connoisseurs alike.

First sip hits with this proper beerish start, all malty and doughy like fresh brioche. Then it swings into sharp lemon and pastry dough – odd combo, but somehow works. There’s a weird plaster note lingering, and I’m getting flashbacks to that old sweater I forgot on the beach, musty and sun-bleached. Maltier again after that, like they’ve cranked up the raw youngish malts. Finish is medium to long, with a crisp straw dryness and a touch of that cool Teaninich character. Almost a surprise how it all ties together, but I’m not complaining. 🥃✨

First sip was a bit beerish, like a cold pint that turned into fresh brioche and good dough, proper comfor. Then the grapefruitlemon zing hit, almost a surprise, like finding an old sweater you forgot on the beach – a bit salty like seaweed and plastery under a moist chalk finish. There’s a raw youngish malt side, classic malty and maltier again as it goes on, medium to long on the palate. Bits of tomato leaves and a whiff of limoncello‑cider swirl in, with a touch of chalk that feels like dry plaster. All in all, Teaninich, really! 🍋🥃

Almost a surprise, this one. Starts off kinda beery, then whoosh — straight lemon juice meets pastry dough? Like a mad limoncello soaked in fresh brioche. There’s this cool Teaninich vibe running through it, really. Young malts, a bit rough, but good dough underneath. And chalk — moist chalk, like licking a seaside rock. Suddenly I’m thinking of seaweed, and an old sweater left on the beach ages ago. Weird, but it works. Gets maltier as it goes, with green pears and a touch of grapefruit. Finish is medium to long, fading into that chalk again… oh, and a little nougat right at the end. 👌

Last night's dram had this plaster note – dry and chalky, kinda like an old sweater you forgot on the beach, all salty and worn. Citrus popped up with grapefruit and lemon, almost a limoncello vibe. It got maltier again, with green pears and straw coming through. The finish was medium to long, cool and crisp, evoking those old, small distilleries. Hints of tomato leaves and cider, with moist chalk on the palate. In the aftertaste, a touch of nougat, almost a surprise, and a good doughy feel. Chalky overall, but I didn't mind it at all. 🥃

First sip hits with a beerish start, kinda like a crisp ale. Then it mellows into classic malty warmth, with a touch of cider and lemon – like straight lemon juice blended right into pastry dough. 😊 The finish is medium to long, that old sweater forgotten on the beach feeling, salty and cozy. Hints of grapefruit and straw pop up, a bit of moist chalk and fresh liquorice underneath. Good dough returns, almost a plaster-like dryness. It gets maltier again as it lingers, and in the aftertaste, there's a sweet touch of nougat. Quite nice, really.
