Pappy Van Winkle was founded by Pappy Van Winkle Sr., beginning at the end of the 19th century and launching its eponymous brand in 1919. The brand survived Prohibition with a medicinal license. In 1935, the Stitzel-Weller Distillery was established, renowned for its bourbon recipe using wheat instead of rye. Passed down through three generations of the family, the brand remained steadfast even after the distillery was sold in 1972. The 20-year Family Reserve, launched in 1994, scored 99 points at the 1998 World Spirits Championship. Acquired by Buffalo Trace in 2002, the Pappy series has become a collector's icon in bourbon due to its exceptional quality and scarcity, representing a legendary American whiskey that embodies 'winning through quality.'

Reddish amber in the glass, and the nose is a funny one — first all nose-tickling marmalade, redcurrants and vanilla, then it drops into tea, varnish and cedarwood. Tastes fresh and fruity enough, with toffee, bitter chocolate and a bit of coconut wine sweetness, but then those heavy toasted oak chips bite back. Finish goes dry, with black tobacco, incense, coffee dregs and that old-school Ténarèze snap hanging about. Quite a ride, honestly 🙂

Starts very well, honestly — fresh at first, with a lovely incense thing and a bit of cedarwood drifting about. Then it turns into toffees and vanillas, quite cosy, but the bitter oaks creep in and it starts getting dry. There’s a nicer sourness too, which I quite like, though I’m a bit ambivalent by the end. The aftertaste has this biting old-school Ténarèze sort of feel. Superb in flashes, but yeah, feels like these Pappies vary a lot 🥃
