Nose first, it’s this light gold dram that’s a bit of a puzzle, know what I mean? There’s a whiff of an old flower bouquet, all dusty and forgotten, then a sharp citrus that’s starting to rot—like lemon peel left out too long. Underneath, earthy herbs and roots give it a damp, almost mouldy edge, but not in a bad way, just... quirky. On the tongue, it’s maltier than I expected, with a rather sweeter kick, like someone’s pinched a bit of icing sugar into the mix. But then it gets more serious—austere, almost too much, with whiffs of beach bonfire smoke and sooty grass. The pot ale influence creeps in, giving it that barley sugar tang, but it’s not quite as challenging as it could be. The finish is rather long, leaving behind the ghosts of old books and forgotten aromas, not quite hitting you over the head but lingering in a way that’s very un-commercial. Takes a moment to really get to the heart of it, a little hard to reach, but when you do—it’s actually rather good. Like sipping on a bonfire that’s been tamed by time.
