Longmorn Distillery, nestled in the heart of Speyside near Elgin, has been crafting exceptional single malt Scotch whisky since its founding in 1893 by John Duff. Contrary to its label's dramatic depiction of rugged peaks, the distillery actually resides on the fertile, rolling farmland of the Moray Firth valley, though the surrounding countryside does feature gentle hills. Longmorn is renowned for its robust, full-bodied character with rich notes of honeyed fruit, vanilla, and toasted nuts, derived from its traditional production methods and pure local spring water. While the distillery's core expression is the Longmorn 16 Year Old, the majority of its production has historically been allocated to premium blended Scotch whiskies, most notably Chivas Regal, where it serves as a key component malt. However, whisky enthusiasts celebrate the fact that Longmorn's exceptional spirit also regularly appears in the portfolios of independent bottlers, offering unique cask-strength and single cask expressions that showcase the distillery's complexity. The distinctive label artwork, featuring the distillery amid mountainous terrain, has become an iconic symbol that captures the aspirational spirit of this hidden Speyside gem, despite the geographical artistic license.

Just had a dram that’s proper unusual, not easy going down but leaves a rather long finish. Gives me a tickle on the tongue with its grassier kick, like sunflower oil mixed with green tobacco and charcoal smoke. Not extremely sexy, but the way it balances bitter beer sharpness with custard sweetness is oddly tempting. The fruits are there too, though they’re hiding behind this oily, golden haze. Rather long and a bit austere, like licking a lemon peel left in the rain. Chincona adds a strange, earthy twist. Definitely not your average dram – tricky, but I’d neck it again 🥃

First nose hits me with a grassy/spicy greenness that really tickles your tongue, feels a bit oilier with a whisper of sunflower oil and glycerine. Then I get green tobacco, lemon peel and a faint charcoal smoke, the palate is rather long, more mineral than fruity, a touch austere but still a good variant 🥃

Honestly, this one's quite austere and not easy to get on with at first. The charcoal smoke hits you right away, then there's this grassier, green sort of character - like chewing on fresh grass blades on a summer morning. Very dry style, almost like a bitter beer in some ways. I'm getting lemons and green tart grapefruits, quite citric. There's a bit of tea in there too, like overbrewed Earl Grey perhaps 🤔 It's got this paraffin, sunflower oil quality that's quite unusual - oily on the palate. The finish is rather long, almost like quinine tonic water. Definitely more mineral than fruity. Not extremely sexy, but it tickles your tongue in a curious way. Quite a gold colour in the glass. An interesting dram for sure, though I'd say it's more of a thinking whisky than a casual sipper.

Blimey, this one’s a proper oddball. Starts off all dry and mineral, like licking a wet stone, then bam—grassy, almost like fresh-cut hay with a whiff of green tobacco. There’s a sharp citric zing, lemon peel maybe, and a hint of that bitter beer tang. Feels a bit oily, coats the tongue, and there’s this weird paraffin note lurking. Finishes long, with a touch of charcoal smoke and a faint chincona bitterness. Not the prettiest, but it’s got character. Tickles a bit too 😅

This one’s a bit of a head-scratcher, if I’m honest. The nose hits you with this sharp, citric zing – think lemon peel and green tobacco leaves, oddly enough. First sip’s got this grassier, almost herbal bite, like biting into a grapefruit that’s been left out in the rain. It’s not the most alluring dram, mind, but there’s something oddly intriguing about that austere, very dry style. The texture’s oily, a bit sunflower-oil-heavy, which lingers on the tongue longer than expected. Midway through, it shifts – charcoal smoke and paraffin notes start creeping in, weirdly enough. There’s a faint custard sweetness trying to sneak out, but it’s buried under more mineral, tea-like undertones. Not easy to pin down, this one. By the end, it’s still got that chincona tang clinging to the glass, and honestly? It’s a good variant for those nights when you fancy something that doesn’t play by the rules. Rather long finish, though – you’ll still taste it when the glass is empty. 🥃
