Laphroaig, Gaelic for 'the beautiful hollow by the broad bay,' stands as one of Islay's most divisive and revered single malt Scotch whiskies. Established in 1815 on the island's southern coast, the distillery's stark white walls sit between windswept pine forests and the tempestuous Atlantic, where the rhythm of crashing waves and rustling trees composes its daily symphony. Laphroaig is one of the few distilleries maintaining traditional floor maltings, producing its own peated malt with phenol levels reaching 50-70 ppm from hand-cut peat harvested from its own bogs. The Kilbride Stream's soft water, filtered through ancient peat and limestone, contributes to its unmistakable character. Maturation primarily in ex-bourbon barrels and distinctive quarter casks intensifies its signature profile: an aggressive blast of medicinal peat smoke, iodine, seaweed, and tar, underpinned by notes of bandages, antiseptic, and salt-crusted driftwood. This maritime complexity yields a full-bodied, oily palate with a long, dry, ashy finish that evokes Islay's harsh, unforgiving landscape and the stubborn artisans who craft it. The distillery's 'love it or hate it' reputation is legendary—there is no middle ground. This polarizing nature earned it a Royal Warrant from HRH The Prince of Wales in 1994 and spawned the global 'Friends of Laphroaig' loyalty program, where members own a symbolic square foot of Islay land. For the initiated, Laphroaig is not merely a whisky; it's an existential statement of peat worship.

First sniff hits me with pure peat smoke and a whiff of tar, like standing near a bonfire on the beach. Then there’s a bright straw note, maybe a touch of malt vinegar and pickling juice theme – reminds me of those brine‑soaked green olives you get in a dirty martini. A bit of anchovy paste and capers pops up, giving that gutsy, medicinal edge, with iodine and camphor lurking in the background. The palate feels long and ashy, wood ashes mixing with a hint of engine oil, while the sherry was deft, adding a subtle sweetness that barely tames the powerhouse feel. It’s pretty far from 'subtle' – more like a canvas of soot, brine and seawaters, yet oddly satisfying. 🍃

Got a dram and it's pretty far from subtle – the nose hits you with brine, anchovy paste and capers, like a dirty martini gone mad. On the palate there’s tar, soot, wood‑ash and a bit of putty, all wrapped in a bright straw glow. Salty seawater and green olives dance with a hint of preserved lemons, malt‑vinegar tang and a whisper of mezcal. It’s long, gutsy and really doubles down on that pickling‑juice theme, the brine and even a faint engine‑oil edge coming through in a strangely pleasant way. Feels like sipping from a canvas‑towed boat in the harbour, very present and oddly satisfying 😊

Bit coastal and punchy, like seawater, sardines and a dab of iodine, then lime and fresh-cut grapefruit lift it right up. There’s a funny whiff of kerosene and used engine oil, but it stays light, almost white-wine fresh. Mouthfeel’s spot on too, a little olive oil slickness, with agave sweetness hanging about. Lovely young, raw, seaside dram 😊

First sip, it's like a dirty martini on steroids—salty, briny seawater mixed with pickled onions and green olives. There's a powerful, non-nonsense punch that hits hard, almost mezcal-like with a smoky, ashy vibe. I get hints of engine oil and soot, plus that pickling juice theme with capers and malt vinegar. The finish is long and gutsy, leaving medicinal camphor and wood ashes on the tongue. Feels young and bold, doubling down on the brine and preserved lemons. It's a real powerhouse, pleasantly present in every sip. 😮

Wow, that's a gutsy start. First sip hits you with pure peat smoke and this ashy, wood ashes sort of thing. Then it’s all seawater and brine, seriously briny, like licking a wet canvas bag near the docks. 🤔 I’m getting definite pickling juice theme, some preserved lemons and green olives, maybe even a hint of pickled onions. There’s a putty, medicinal layer underneath, with this chip fat savouriness. Not a hint of subtlety here, it's a proper powerhouse. The finish is all iodine and salty, like a dirty martini made with anchovy notes and capers. It's so present, really doubling down on those gutsy, briny notes. Honestly, a pleasant wallop of flavour for a chilly evening.
