Clynelish Distillery was established by Peter Mackie—the visionary behind the White Horse blend and owner of Lagavulin—in partnership with Alexander Edward to address the pressing need for additional production capacity during the late 19th-century whisky boom. Surging demand had created inventory shortages for large blending houses, making new distillery construction essential. Mackie, who operated a London sales office, was particularly troubled by competition from large grain whisky producers, dismissing their spirits as 'short-aged, cheap, and burnt-tasting.' His lifelong principle was guaranteeing product quality, firmly believing that consumers wanted aged whisky—the accumulation of years, not shortcuts. The distillery's production features a Steinecker full-lauter mash tun installed in 2001, replacing the original open cast iron vessel. Fermentation occurs in eight larch washbacks with a combined capacity of 47,000 liters over 56-60 hours. Two pairs of stills, each equipped with traditional worm tub condensers, produce the spirit; notably, the original copper worms were upgraded to stainless steel in 2014. By 2019, the distillery could produce 3.9 million liters of new make spirit weekly from 21 mashes. Clynelish maintained an exceptionally low profile, rarely releasing official bottlings before its 2014 brand restructuring. That year introduced three core expressions aged 13, 17, and 23 years to select retail markets. This was followed by a duty-free exclusive series featuring 19, 31, and 33-year-old whiskies—the 19 and 31-year expressions have since been discontinued, while the 33-year expanded to US retail. In early 2018, two limited duty-free releases debuted: a 24-year-old and a 17-year-old finished in Palo Cortado sherry casks. The range's pinnacle is a 51-year-old expression, uniquely released in autumn 2018 not for sale, but as a complimentary tasting experience for whisky enthusiasts at pop-up events in the UK, Australia, South Africa, and the USA, accessible only through advance registration.

Had a whisky with a split personality syndrome last night – neutral base, then vanilla and super-active French oak hit me. No odd spiciness, thankfully, and not whorishly sweet; more like strolling through autumn leaves. The double-maturation’s clever; extracts and mingles honey with vitamin C tablet tartness. Sweet and fruity, like tinned pineapples and a glass of orange juice. Add a drop of water, and it turns into liquid lemon honey with apricots in syrup. Medium finish, done in a wonderful manner. I shouldn’t like this, and yet I do. Sauternes barrique brings a wine-like sweetness, but good for wine isn’t obligatorily good for spirits – here it works. Ripe greengages, mirabelle jam, and a wee earthiness. Colour’s dark gold, with a solid malt backbone. Tastes of squeezed oranges, apricot pie, even mirabelle plums. Very well done, mate. 🍂🍯

Okay,so pour myself a dram and give it a nose... Right,I shouldn’t like this, and yet I do. It’s like that apricot pie your nan makes – sweet and fruity, but not whorishly sweet, you know? There’s this big hit of vanilla and liquid lemon honey up front, like a good squeeze of oranges into your morning juice. Then I get that note of tinned pineapples and apricots in syrup, almost like vitamin C tablets dissolved in orange juice. It’s got this double-maturation thing going on, I reckon, with that super-active French oak giving it a bit of a split personality syndrome. One minute it’s all Haribo’s best and mirabelle jam, the next there’s a wee earthiness and rather autumn leaves. With a drop of water, it really opens up. That’s when the quince jelly and mirabelle plums come through, along with a good measure of malt. No odd spiciness at all. The finish is medium, leaving you with a clever, dark gold memory of honey. It’s not just sweet – it’s got a wonderful manner of extracting and mellowing all those flavours. Very well done, I’d say.

Dark gold in the glass, looks lovely. 🥃 Nose has autumn leaves and mirabelle jam, with vanilla from that super-active French oak. Not whorishly sweet, which is nice. Taste starts with squeezed oranges and vitamin C tablets – a bit like citrus zest. Then it opens up to apricots in syrup and tinned pineapples, with a hint of apricot pie. There's a wee earthiness from the malt, and it works with water to extract and mingle more flavours. Clever stuff, really. Finish is medium, leaving a liquid lemon honey feel. Ripe greengages and quince jelly come through, plus a touch of Sauternes. Not obligatorily good for spirits, but I reckon it's wonderful for a change. 😊

Lovely wee dram 🥃 Feels warm and mellow, with a bit of honey, oak, and gentle spice. Slight fruitiness too, like baked apple. Finish is cosy, not too sharp — quite easy to sip.
