So, poured a glass of this one tonight. It's a lovely gold colour in the glass. First sip, it hits you with this surprisingly creamy, almost latte-like quality. There's a real malty sweetness upfront, reminds me of those little sugar eggs you get at Easter, or maybe a touch of barley syrup. But then it opens up into something more complex. I'm getting this wonderful savoury note - like a really rich marrow bouillon or a lighter meat broth. And wow, that's a wonderfully meaty undertone. It's not just sweet; there's a touch of saltier, almost sweeter soy sauce in there. The roasted carrots note is subtle but it's there, and I swear I can taste a hint of Swiss cheese. Great news! It's interesting. The mouthfeel is nice and round, no real firepower at all, which is fine for a relaxed evening. It's got elements of coffee liqueurs, dark beers, and a bit of that Westvleteren 12 complexity, but it's very much its own thing. The toffee is there, balanced with a tiny aroma from the cask. My only thought is it's a little too sweet and sour for my usual taste, and the aftertaste is a tad cloying, sticking around with that chicory coffee bitterness. The maltiness is troubling indeed if you're not in the mood for it. Still, a really interesting dram. 👍
