Brora stands as one of Scotland's most legendary 'ghost distilleries,' having operated from 1819 to 1983 before its closure and miraculous rebirth in 2020. Originally established as Clynelish by the notorious Marquis of Stafford during the Highland Clearances, the distillery was rebuilt in 1896 by James Ainslie, creating a heavily peated maritime malt that became essential to Johnnie Walker blends. After DCL built a new Clynelish distillery in 1967, the original site was renamed Brora and specialized in robust, phenolic whisky for premium blends. During its 'silent era' (1983-2020), remaining stocks became some of the world's most collectible whiskies, commanding auction prices exceeding $10,000 per bottle. Diageo's £35 million restoration preserved two original copper pot stills and vintage equipment, relaunching production in 2020 with an 800,000-liter capacity. The distillery's waxy, sooty, maritime character—reminiscent of burnt heather and sea salt—continues to define its ultra-premium Special Releases and the milestone 40-year-old 200th anniversary edition.

First whiff reminds me of a high‑end green tea mixed with a touch of Lapsang souchong, then a smoky apple juice that feels almost like a peppery herbal liqueur. On the palate there’s a good mouth feel – barley sugar, a bit of wax, and a gentle smoked fish note, though the peat is softer than I expected, more like a less peaty dram. Finishes with a good attack, a hint of beer‑like malt and a lingering peppery kick 😊

Just poured a dram that greets me with Smoke, pepper and apple juice, a hint of burning grass and straw. The feel is waxy, very sooty yet sweet – barley sugar and a splash of high‑end green tea. It's very dry, very ashy, with a touch of cigar smoke, but the finish is long and entrancing, leaving a faint beer‑like maltiness. Very fine dram, good mouth feel, and definitely smoky indeed. 🥃

This one hits you right away with a proper smoky punch – think campfire soot mixed with Lapsang souchong tea, but with a twist. It’s got that straighter smokiness from the Clynelish, but less peaty than you’d expect, more like smoked fish and cigar smoke dancing together. The ashiness is very ashy, almost dry to the point of being herbal, like those old herbal liqueurs. There’s a peppery kick and a hint of lemon, but then it softens with barley sugar and straw sweetness. Good mouth feel, waxy almost, and the finish lingers long – very fine dram. 🔥🥃

First sip, good attack with lemon and that low strength vibe. Smoky, peat smoke like Lapsang souchong but not harsh. Long finish, ashy and herbal, very dry. Entrancing, like a fine dram with smoky apple juice. Peppery, good mouth feel, peat less peaty now. Reminds of smoked fish, maybe with wax or barley sugar. Straighter smokiness, cigar smoke, very sooty but nice. Smoked tea notes too, high-end green tea maybe.

First nose hits me with peat smoke and smoked fish, like a bonfire on the beach – very sooty, very ashy. A hint of lemon zest and barley sugar pops up, then a whiff of cigar smoke and burning grass. The palate is peppery, a touch waxy, with a sweet note that reminds me of high‑end green tea and smoky apple juice. Good attack, long finish, very dry. Quite entrancing, though the second sip felt palate was slightly less good. Still a very fine dram. 🥃
